Opis:: The wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis L.) is a very rare tree species in Poland, which also represents the north-eastern border of its natural range. The majority of this species’ stands is found in Wielkopolska. This study was aimed at examining the relationships between growth and climate for trees of the species Sorbus torminalis L. growing in the Wielkopolski National Park and the forest district Pniewy (Wielkopolska). Samples for the analysis were taken from 63 trees. However, taking into account the missing growth rings and difficult identification of the tree-ring borders in sapwood, only ca. 30% of the samples could be synchronized and dated accurately. Applying classic methods of dendrochronological dating, a 94-year STW chronology was constructed, spanning the years 1920–2013. The chronology, in turn, was used as a basis for dendroclimatological analyses including correlation, response function and pointer years. Climatic data used in the analyses came from the meteorological station in Poznań; providing air temperature and precipitation for a period of 66 years (1948–2013) and 48 years of insolation data (1966–2013). Insolation had the highest negative and precipitation the highest positive impact on the annual growth in May and June. Positive pointer years could be linked to humid months with low insolation during the growth season, while negative pointer years are characterized by deficient precipitation, a large number of sunny hours and high air temperatures in the summer months.

Opis:: Szczecin harbours Poland’s largest London plane tree population. The London plane trees growing in Szczecin’s Żeromski Park were subjected to dendroclimatological research (analyses of signature years and response function). The study was based on a composite site chronology, signed ZER, spanning 105 years (1900–2004); the mean annual tree ring growth was 2.59 mm. Precipitation, particularly that in late winter- early spring and in the summer months was found to be a factor decisive for the tree’s cambial activity. A high sum of precipitation during the periods mentioned induced positive growth responses in the trees. Thermal conditions during the growth period proved to be another factor controlling the annual tree ring growth, as shown by linear relationships. The tree ring growth-climate relationships in the population under study as well as the between-parks differences in the London plane tree response can be explained by differences in habitat conditions. The trees under study grow in the vicinity of a busy, frequently repaired street and are surrounded by pavement and/or hardened road surface, which greatly limits the infiltration of moisture supplied by precipitation.

Opis:: The study was aimed at investigations of the relationships growth-climate at two oak species growing in forests of north-western Poland; the red oak, the most abundant deciduous tree species of foreign origin, in terms of the appearance sites and surface, and the common oak, the most abundant domestic oak species. The research material were samples taken with a Pressler increment borer from 51 oak trees from two research plots. Within the surfaces selected, trees grow in a fresh forest habitat, in the floral association of the lowland fertile beech forest, also called the Pomerania beech forest, with plants characteristic for the association of the lowland humid beech forest with mercuries, encountered only in the Puszcza Bukowa (Beech Forest). The trees investigated were in good and very good health conditions, only scarce branch and bough deadwood could be observed in the canopies. On the basis of measurements of the annual growth widths, three local chronologies were constructed; two for the red oak and one for the common oak. After the indexation, they were used for dendroclimatical analyses; signature years, correlation and response function. The red oaks forming the shortest chronology (79-year-long pattern representing ca. 90-year-old trees) exhibited the narrowest mean annual increments (1.27 mm), in comparison to the longer chronologies (156 and 151 years in length, the increment widths 1.55 and 1.59 mm, respectively). This could be due to relatively high density of the tree stand, formation of the second stage, beneath the main canopies, as well as lack sufficient amount of the sunlight for the red oaks from that research plot. At both the species analysed, the predominating factor affecting the annual growth widths proved to be the amount of precipitation in the growth season, particularly in June and July, as well and thermal conditions of October of the year preceding the vegetation season in question. In the time of present climatic changes, as well as shifting ranges of the species of plants and animals (including insect pests of the forest trees), knowledge of the relation growth-climate for one of the foreign trees, most often introduced in Poland, characterized by fast growth, resistance on insect pests, and high quality of wood, becomes highly important for the forest management, particularly at planning seedlings, of which effects would be possible to evaluate in over 100 years.

Opis:: The aim of undertaken research was recognition the reasons of dying out the common juniper Juniperus communis L. ssp. communis population in the forest nature reserve “Jałowce” (Pomerania). Applied methods of dendrochronological analysis let to determine the age of juniper-stand in the reserve and describe the influence of climatic conditions on its growth. Obtained results testify to Juniperus communis chronology with signature WIE collected from 17 individual sequences which numbered 102 tree ring width and represented a time span 1903 to 2004. Such results described the juniper-stand in the reserve as ageing population with the oldest specimen at age 98 years. However, the last several years were characterised by the lack of strong growth depressions typical for earlier time periods with tree ring width ranged 0.7–1.0 mm (themean annual tree ring width amounted to 0.85 mm), but the visible symptoms of degeneration and dying out of protected common juniper population intensified probably because of its age.

Opis:: The aim of the research was to determine the impact of climatic conditions on the tree−ring width of Swedish whitebeam Sorbus intermedia (Ehrh.) Pers. growing in the urban conditions in Szczecin (NW Poland). The samples were taken from 26 trees growing along Rodziewiczówny, Ejsmonda and Santocka streets (left bank of the Odra river). On the basis of the tree−ring width measurements and cross−dating, two local chronologies (JS1 – Rodziewiczówny and Ejsmonda streets, and JS2 – Santocka street) were developed. Later on we indexed them (double detrending, least squares method and spline function) and subjected to the analysis of correlation and response functions. Growth−climate dependencies in both Swedish whitebeam communities are different. For the JS1 chronology the highest value of the multiple regression coefficient was obtained for air temperature, while for JS2 chronology for insolation and precipitation. For both sequences dependency on climate is similar in August and December of the previous year of vegetation and in January, February, April, June and July of the current year. The observed differences are the result of the impact of various factors related to human activity: traffic volume, soil pollution (mainly heavy metals and salt), damage to roots, trunks and crowns.
