Opis:
Galapagos is a natural laboratory offering a great opportunity to study plants functional traits. This study characterises morphological and ecophysiological responses of Croton scouleri, an endemic tree that habits from humid and upper elevations to semiarid lowlands, throughout an altitudinal gradient and in a manipulative experiment. Croton scouleri trees were gradually smaller with less total leaf area due to a gradual reduction in mean leaf size, and they folded their leaves at lower elevations. These results were also recorded after cutting every deep root. Two physiological traits that allowed Croton scouleri to avoid damages to the photosynthetic apparatus were detected between 30 and 150 m a.s.l. Lower variable fluorescence (Fv) and basal fluorescence (F0) keeping constant maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) denoted a drop in chlorophyll concentration. Concomitantly, the recorded increase in the Quantum efficiency of PSII (ΦPSII) with similar Fv/Fm means that Croton scouleri could be using cyclic electron transport as photoprotective mechanism. On the other hand, a deep root system to reach the water table allowed Croton scouleri to behave as a drought-avoider, which was reflected in: (1) unvarying water status Leaf Water Content and Relative Water Content were always higher than 69 and 58%, respectively; (2) stable and low photoinhibition levels; and (3) unvarying leaf area index. However, Croton scouleri was not able to avoid drought at altitudes lower 30 m a.s.l. where similar responses to those recorded after root cutting were recorded.

Opis:
Nowadays we are continuously bombarded with a lot of information, and because of it we have serious problems with accessing the relevant information, that is, we suffer from the information overload problems. Recommender systems have been applied successfully to avoid the information overload in different domains, but the number of electronic resources daily generated keeps growing and the problem rises again. Therefore, we find a persistent problem of information overload. In this paper we propose an improved recommender system to avoid the persistent information overload found in a University Digital Library. The idea is to include a memory to remember selected resources but not recommended to the user, and in such a way, the system could incorporate them in future recommendations to complete the set of filtered resources, for example, if there are a few resources to be recommended or if the user wishes output obtained by combination of resources selected in different recommendation rounds.

In this paper we describe the application of a Simple ACO (S-ACO) as a method of optimization for membership functions' parameters of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) in order to find the optimal intelligent controller for an Autonomous Wheeled Mobile Robot. Simulation results show that ACO outperforms a GA in the optimization of FLCs for an autonomous mobile robot.

Opis:
A generalization of the Málaga atmospheric optical communications links treated as a finite number of generalized-K distributed sub-channels is analyzed in terms of outage probability and outage rate when its β parameter belongs to the set of real numbers. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first time that β ∈ ℜ is considered. The new analytical expressions derived in this paper lead to a new physical and more realistic interpretation of atmospheric optical links, especially in terms of performance.

Opis:
A new and generalized statistical model, called Málaga distribution (M distribution), has been derived recently to characterize the irradiance fluctuations of an unbounded optical wave front propagating through a turbulent medium under all irradiance fluctuation conditions. As great advantages associated to that model, we can indicate that it is written in a simple tractable closed-form expression and that it is able to unify most of the proposed statistical models for free-space optical communications derived until now in the scientific literature. Based on that Málaga model, we have analyzed in this paper the role of the detection threshold in a free-space optical system employing an on-off keying modulation technique and involved in different scenarios, and taking into account the extinction ratio associated to the employed laser. First we have derived some analytical expressions for the lower-bound performance of the free-space optical system with the light intensity fading induced by turbulence obtained when the additive white Gaussian noise is not present in the system. Then, we have analyzed the optimal threshold in the system and how it changes when atmospheric conditions vary. Finally, a closed form expression for the bit error rate of that system is derived.

Opis:
For a herbaceous species, the inverse of the fresh leaf surface density, the Hughes constant, is nearly conserved. We apply the Hughes constant to develop an absolute method of leafarea measurement that requires no regression fits, prior calibrations or oven-drying. The Hughes constant was determined in situ using a known geometry and weights of a sub-set obtained from the fresh leaves whose areas are desired. Subsequently, the leaf-areas (at any desired stratification level), were derived by utilizing the Hughes constant and the masses of the fresh leaves. The proof of concept was established for leaf-discs of the plants Mandevilla splendens and Spathiphyllum wallisii. The conservativeness of the Hughes constant over individual leaf-zones and different leaftypes from the leaves of each species was quantitatively validated. Using the globally averaged Hughes constant for each species, the leaf-area of these and additional co-species plants, were obtained. The leaf-area-measurement-by-mass was cross-checked with standard digital image analysis. There were no statistically significant differences between the leaf-area-measurement-by-mass and the digital image analysis measured leaf-areas and the linear correlation between the two methods was very good. Leaf-areameasurement- by-mass was found to be rapid and simple with accuracies comparable to the digital image analysis method. The greatly reduced cost of leaf-area-measurement-by-mass could be beneficial for small agri-businesses in developing countries.
