Opis:
Recently, the authors proposed a geometrically exact beam finite element formulation on the Lie group SE(3). Some important numerical and theoretical aspects leading to a computationally efficient strategy were obtained. For instance, the formulation leads to invariant equilibrium equations under rigid body motions and a locking free element. In this paper we discuss some important aspects of this formulation. The invariance property of the equilibrium equations under rigid body motions is discussed and brought out in simple analytical examples. The discretization method based on the exponential map is recalled and a geometric interpretation is given. Special attention is also dedicated to the consistent interpolation of the velocities.
W ostatnim czasie autorzy zaproponowali geometrycznie dokładne sformułowanie dla belkowego elementu skończonego w oparciu o formalizm grupy Liego SE(3). Otrzymano szereg istotnych wyników numerycznych i teoretycznych prowadzących do efektywnej strategii obliczeniowej. Właściwość niezmienniczości równań równowagi w warunkach ruchu ciała sztywnego przedyskutowano i zilustrowano prostymi przykładami analitycznymi. Przypomniano metodę dyskretyzacji opartą na mapowaniu wykładniczym i pokazano jej interpretację geometryczną. Specjalną uwagę poświęcono zgodnej interpolacji prędkości.

Opis:
Cell manipulation using external magnetic fields has been proposed to accelerate the neck reendothelization of saccular unruptured stented intracranial aneurysms. This work presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a Saccular Brain Aneurysm that incorporates a helicoidal stent. An Eulerian-Lagrangian model implemented in ANSYS-Fluent is used to simulate the hemodynamics in the aneurysm. In silico studies have been conducted to describe the incidence of the magnetic field direction, frequency and amplitude on the blood hemodynamics and particle capture efficiency, when an external magnetic field is used to trap magnetically labeled particles traveling through the aneurysm. It is found that the magnetic field direction affects the particle concentration in the target region. Simulation results show that the highest particle capture efficiency is obtained with a 1T magnetic field amplitude in an open bore MRI scanner, when a permanent magnet is used.

Opis:
The finding of significant vertebrate remains inside commercial stone blocks is relatively rare. Here we describe a fossil cetacean skull discovered inside two slabs cut from a limestone block of Tortonian (i.e., early late Miocene) age from Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain); this find represents the third record of a fossil cetacean from this island, as well as the best preserved. Unlike similar cases in the past, the Menorca skull was not extracted mechanically from the stone matrix, being rather imaged by means of computed tomography. The resulting 3D reconstruction of the skull allows us to refer the studied skull to the extant odontocete family Ziphiidae (beaked whales) and sheds light on the morphology of very delicate structures (e.g., the thin pterygoid hamuli and the mesorostral cartilage) that would likely have been destroyed during traditional mechanical preparation. This non-invasive investigation permits detailed osteo- anatomical comparisons between the Menorca specimen and other extinct ziphiids, leading to the referral of the former to the stem beaked whale Messapicetus cf. longirostris. We then review the geographic distribution of fossil remains of Messapicetus, which include other occurrences from Tortonian shelf deposits of southeastern Italy, southern Peru, and Maryland (eastern USA). Early branching beaked whales (including basal members of the so-called “Messapicetus clade”) likely dispersed via the Central American Seaway, which allowed a direct communication between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans (including the Mediterranean cul-de-sac) throughout the Miocene.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This study evaluates the influence of opportunity-enhancing human resource practices on radical innovation and examines the mediating role of exploration capability in this relationship. Design/methodology/approach – Hypotheses were formulated to determine the relationship between opportunity-enhancing human resource practices and radical innovation, as well as the mediating role that exploration capability plays in this relationship. These were tested in 168 Colombian companies from the telecommunications and chemical-pharmaceutical sectors using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via the Partial Least Squares (PLS) technique. Findings – The study indicates that opportunity-enhancing human resource practices positively and significantly influence radical innovation. In addition, this relationship is mediated by exploration capability. Research implications/limitations – Organizations should implement opportunity-enhancing human resource practices to support radical innovation development. These practices provide employees with opportunities to explore relevant knowledge and technologies necessary for radical innovation. Originality/value/contribution – Identifying and testing a specific group of human resource practices that facilitate radical innovation is one of the most significant gaps in the scientific literature on the relationship between human resource practices and innovation. According to this article, opportunity-enhancing human resource practices facilitate radical innovation in organizations. Furthermore, previous research has not examined the relationship between opportunity-enhancing human resource practices, exploration capability, and radical innovation.

Opis:
Fault diagnosis of an internal combustion engine is proposed herein by means of vibration analysis and a comparative analysis of normal operation and induced misfire scenarios. In order to validate previous works on misfire with pure gasoline, measurements also included tests performed with ethanol-gasoline fuel blends. According to results, changes in the fuel mix seem to have little impact on the performance and behaviour of the engine. And additionally, the particular frequency components that allowed differentiation between normal and faulty conditions were also present on all the fuel blends tested. Fast Fourier Transform was applied to obtain the frequency domain of the signal as a previous step to the subsequent identification process based on statistical characteristics extraction. A fuel blend classification method based on the analysis of the vibration signals of the engine was studied using envelope, Spike Energy and Peak Value techniques. Differentiation was possible with the extraction of the statistical features of the Peak Value spectrum of the longitudinal acceleration with a specific filter selection.

Opis:
In this paper, the capabilities of chromatic dispersion compensation of a photonic crystal fiber with a hexagonal distribution of circular air holes was investigated. The vector finite element method with scattering boundary condition was used to analyze a set of configurations of the fiber in which the distance between air holes’ centers was modified. With this method it was possible to obtain the values of chromatic dispersion and confinement factor in the C fiber band. The best suited configurations were tested in a 160 km optical link with a bit rate of 40 Gbps. The performance was evaluated by measuring the bit error rate for a set of 20 channels with channel spacing of 100 GHz. T e simulation results showed that is possible to reach values of hromatic dispersion as low as −850 ps/nm⋅km, confinement losses close to 10⁻³ dB/km and good BER results in the order of 10⁻¹⁷ for a wavelength of 1550 nm.
