    In the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century Polish scientific and professional communities took action to tighten contacts between compatriots living in the area of the three partitioning powers, and the emigration. This was a response to the unsuccessful attempts at regaining independence by using weapons. Engaging in scientific activity and building relations were supposed to replace the armed struggle. It meant that connections were established between Polish scientific societies, and first of all, conventions were organised. The initiatives taken on this forum served the development of Polish science and helped Poles to act collectively, which gradually assumed an organised form embracing the three partitions. Polish scholars also aspired to establish a common representation on the international forum. Such initiatives taken by scientific and professionalcommunities largely contributed to the restoration of independent Poland.

    Opis:
    On 25–27th September 1912, scientific and clergy circles in Cracow hosted the Catholic Congress to commemorate Piotr Skarga. It constituted the main element of the Polish commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of Piotr Skarga’s death. Beyond-partitions nature of the meeting was reflected in the composition of the organizing committee, the issues discussed, and the resolutions passed. The Congress also provided an opportunity to manifest the connections between Polish circles in public. The Congress’ commemoration of Piotr Skarga should also be considered as an element of a reliable method that allowed scientific and socio-professional circles to establish and maintain contacts beyond partitions.

    This article examines the coverage of German themes in Polish local press by focusing on a number of newspapers and periodicals published at Siedlce in the 1930s, i.e. Gazeta Podlaska, Nowa Gazeta Podlaska, Głos Podlaski, Ziemia Siedlecka, Wiadomości Diecezjalne Podlaskie and Życie Podlasia.
    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie tematyki niemieckiej na łamach polskiej prasy lokalnej, na przykładzie wydawanych w Siedlcach w latach trzydziestych XX w. pism: „Gazeta Podlaska”, „Nowa Gazeta Podlaska”, „Głos Podlaski”, „Ziemia Siedlecka”, „Wiadomości Diecezjalne Podlaskie” i „Życie Podlasia”.

    Artykuł jest poświęcony przedstawieniu charakterystyki prasy ukraińskiej ukazującej się w latach I wojny światowej na terenie Podlasia lub poza nim (Brześć), ale adresowanej i docierającej do miejscowej ludności. Czasopisma te mogły ukazywać się dzięki aprobacie niemieckich władz okupacyjnych. Wydawaniem ich zajmowały się organizacje społeczne, religijne i terenowe komórki administracji ukraińskiej. Pisma odgrywały istotną rolę w organizacji działań na rzecz odrodzenia życia narodowego miejscowej ludności oraz upowszechniania idei budowy niepodległego państwa ukraińskiego.
    The article presents the characteristics of the Ukrainian press published during World War I in the territory of Podlasie or outside it (Brest) but addressed and reaching the local population. These periodicals could be issued owing to the approval of the German occupation authorities. They were published by social, religious, and local units of Ukrainian administration. The periodicals played a vital role in the organisation of activities to revive the national life of local people and to propagate the idea of reconstructing an independent Ukrainian state.

    The paper touches upon the theme of how the provincial press in Poland commented on the Polish-Czechoslovakian conflict over Cieszyn Silesia, Spiš and Orava. The timespan covers a few months in 1938 and 1939 - from the time Hitler made his claims towards Czechoslovakia until the moment the state was dismantled. The author has focused on presenting the Polish-Czechoslovakian relations as reported by the press published in Siedlce, a district town located in the centre of pre-war Poland. At that time four periodicals were published there. The analysis of these publications has allowed the author to determine that the editors informed their readers about the situation of the disputed territories on a regular basis. The editors tried to make their message more attractive by posting photos or accounts by special correspondents. They built among its readers a negative image of the Czechoslovakian state, which was presented as an artificial creation where the rights of national minorities were not respected. The incorporation of these lands into Poland was presented as a symbol of historical justice. The press also played an important part in mobilising the local community to act for fellow countrymen from the lands being the object of the Polish-Czechoslovakian dispute. However, it did not recognise the growth of Slovakian independence activities, which were important for the internal affairs of Poland’s southern neighbour.
