Opis:
Anthropological Sensitivity and the World Presented. An Essay on the Anthropology of Literature Abstract in English Wojciech J. Burszta's essay takes its inspiration from two different sources: it recognises a new, modified attitude to "classical" anthropological texts by Frazer. Malinowski, Mead, Levi-Strauss or Benedict but it also centres round a theory of the literary truth developed by Mario Vargas Llosa. Llosa differentiates between the truth of non-fictional writing (e.g. history, journalism) and the truth of fiction which depends on its power to create illusions and captivate the reader's imagination. Burszta points out that the anthropological discourse is a hybrid form in that respect: it combines a commitment to facts with imaginative recreation of the world, which is characteristic of literature. Thus. according to Burszta, anthropology comes to occupy the no-man's-land in between nonfiction and fiction. Consequently, anthropological imagination will be in close rapport with aesthetic imagination which does not have to rely on the author's actual experiences. .

Opis:
The aim of the study is to evaluate the xenogamous nature of cultural studies. The author is of the opinion that the word xenogamy that belongs to the biological sciences is worth applying in the form of another metaphor, one relating to the concept of culture as such, culture as an abstract category. The history of this word’s usage, and the resultant connotations and denotations of the concept of culture, show that its meaning is not only constantly evolving, expanding or narrowing, but is in addition constantly being ‘pollinated’ by various areas of social practice. Proving the proposed thesis the author presents the selected works on the concept of culture.

Abstract. Burszta Wojciech J., Wymiary antropologicznego poznania kultury (Dimensions of Anthropological Cognition of Culture), Poznań 1992. Adam Mickiewicz University Press, Seria Etnografia nr 15, pp. 220.. ISBN 83-232-0414-4. ISSN 0209-2077. Text in Polish with summary in English. The author of this book puts forward a fundamental thesis that anthropological studies of culture are at present in a paradoxical epistemological and theoretical-methodological situation. This situation is marked, on the one hand, by the intradisciplinary concepts of “crisis of representation” and “changing paradigm”, and on the other by the concept of anthropologisation of modem humanities. In the second case the growing role of solutions of anthropology used on philosophical grounds as well as in other disciplines is concerned. It happens despite the fact that anthropologists themselves perceive their science as being just in the stage of crisis and formation of its new model. Summary The author of this book puts forward a fundamental thesis that anthropological studies of culture are at present in a paradoxical epistemological and theoretical-methodological situation. This situation is marked, on the one hand, by the intradisciplinary concepts of “crisis of representation” and “changing paradigm”, and on the other by the concept of anthropologisation of modern humanities. In the second case the growing role of solutions of anthropology used on philosophical grounds as well as in other disciplines is concerned. It happens despite the fact that anthropologists themselves perceive their science as being just in the stage of crisis and formation of its new model. The first chapter of this book, “‘We’ and ‘they’ - or anthropological studies of culture”, gives arguments for a thesis that since the very beginning anthropology was interested above all in cultural difference, i.e. the study of the states of culture alien to the social consciousness of Europeans. Anthropological “rivalry” with a foreign cultural context made it that on the example of anthropology there become particularly prominent the epistemological, theoretical-methodological, linguistic, practical-technical issues and barriers which potentially pertain to all kinds of knowledge about culture, not only about the “alien” one. Chapters II and III document the selected and fundamental dimensions of the discussion of possibilities of the so - called subjective reconstruction of culture with the leading role of language in cognition and interpretation of a thesis of cultural relativism taken into consideration. Chapter IV, “From the subjective language to the ‘reflexive’ metalanguage. Postmodernism in anthropology”, presents a modern discussion of the condition of anthropology. The author points to the basic thread of the discussion, i.e. a postulate that the subjective studies of culture were supplemented (or simply replaced) with a reflection on the impossibility of such studies using only the subjective language (the language of the first semantic order). Moreover, in this chapter the general features of the postmodernist research consciousness are indicated. They make the traditional paradigm of anthropology to be submitted to the final destruction. Chapter V, entitled “Anthropology as a domain of culture”, expresses the author’s theoretical point of view. When taking into consideration certain thesis proposed by postmodernism and rejecting their extreme variants the author is in favour of the conception of modern anthropology which is situated between the extreme supra-cultural objectivism and the equally extreme cognitive relativism. This standpoint closely combines the solutions from the theory of cognition with those of the theory of culture. The last chapter, “Culture - folklorism - postfolklorism”, takes the general considerations in the field of the theory of anthropological cognition onto the grounds of Polish ethnology, a peripheral science of a specifically formed subject of studies. However, it appears that also on the local grounds of Polish ethnology one can trace, and should take into account, all the elements of the debate about the crisis of the conception of knowledge in modern science.
