Opis:
This study shows the sensitivity of using silicone rubber passive sampler(SR-PS) andgas chromatography with mass spectrometer (GC-MS) detection for monitoring and identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water systems. The analysis was performed for eighteen PAHs compounds after pre-concentration using Soxhlet extraction method. By comparison, a total of 13 PAHs were detected in the spot water samples, of which none was quantifiable. The freely dissolved PAH concentrations were found to range from 0.17 ng/L to 0.76 ng/L at Ugieriver. The use of fluorine d10 as Performance reference compound(PRC) gives a sampling rates of 8.14 (L/day) for silicone rubber passive samplers. Analysis of PAHs concentrations suggest the contaminants are mainly from pyrolytic sources. Overall it can be concluded that SR-PS are viable alternatives in the environmental monitoring of PAHs.

Opis:
Isoflavones in soybean have been well-known with many health-promoting effects on humans. This study aimed to purify isoflavones from the crude soybean extract by the static adsorption/desorption process on macroporous resins. A screening test of four commercial resins: D101, AB-8, Amberlite(R) XAD4, and Diaion HP20 according to their adsorption/desorption characteristic for isoflavones was investigated. All four resins showed high adsorption and desorption characteristics in which D101 resin was chosen as the most suitable resin for purifying isoflavones. Compositional analysis showed that daidzin and genistin were the main isoflavones in the crude soybean extract. The adsorption isotherms data of total isoflavones, daidzin, and genistin fitted well with the Langmuir model with R2>0.98. The dynamic adsorption conditions for the purification process of isoflavones on the D101 resin-packed column were selected at the bed volume (BV) of 200 mL, feed volume of 3.75 BV, and flow rate of 1.5 BV/h. The dynamic desorption was carried out with the elution solution of 70% (v/v) ethanol, elution volume of 2.5 BV, and flow rate of 1 BV/h. The total isoflavone content in the purified extract was 8.70-fold higher than its initial content in the crude soybean extract with a recovery yield of nearly 80%. The study results reveal a strong possibility for large-scale production of isoflavones for further application in functional food products or pharmaceutical products.

Opis:
The left hemiface expresses emotion more intensely than the right. Because emotional expressions contract the facial muscles and wrinkle the skin, theoretically the left hemiface’s greater expressivity should prompt more pronounced expression lines and wrinkles on the left than right side of the face. As wrinkles are the most salient age cue, we investigated whether the left hemiface consequently appears older than the right. Two hundred and sixty participants (F=148; M=112) viewed booklets containing pairs of left-left and right-right chimeric faces of eight models (M=F). For each trial participants were asked to make a two alternative forced choice response indicating which image looked older. Results confirmed a left cheek bias, with participants more likely to select left-left than right-right chimeras. Whilst participant gender did not influence perceptions, model gender predicted cheek selections: responses to female models drive the overall left cheek bias. The left cheek (56.8%) appeared older than the right cheek (43.2%) for female models, whereas there was little difference in perceived age between male models' left (50.8%) and right (49.2%) cheeks. Given that youth influences perceptions of female beauty, these findings complement previous research and offer a potential explanation for why the left side of females’ faces are judged less attractive: the right cheek appears younger.
