Opis:: The paper presents the political thought of Muhammad Yusuf, who was the ideologist of the northern Nigerian organisation for Islamic renewal known as Boko Haram. Muhammad Yusuf was a Salafi scholar who preached the necessity to revive the earliest form of Islam, to introduce Sharia in full in northern Nigeria, and to build a religious state based on the Sokoto caliphate. Yusuf regarded democracy as an illegal political system and equated it with polytheism. He perceived politicians and secular state’s administrational workers as idolaters and negated their right to consider themselves Muslims. His teachings, based on disdain for the incumbent government, provided him with social support and served as inspiration for anti-establishment sentiments.

Opis:: The paper discusses some elements of the tradition of martyrdom among Muslims in northern Nigeria. It describes the basic frameworks of the concept of martyrdom in Islam with special reference to its contemporary usage. Then it discusses the shape of the idea of martyrdom during the times of Usman ɗan Fodio’s jihad. It further examines the concept of martyrdom as presented in the speeches of Muhammad Yusuf, the ideologue of the Boko Haram organisation, as well as its practical implementation in the times of the current rebellion in northern Nigeria.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to summarize the ideology of Muhammad Yusuf, who was the founder of Boko Haram – the northern Nigerian terrorist organization. Yusuf created his theory in the context of neofundamentalist teachings of the ‘Yan Izala. During the cooperation with the ‘Yan Izala, Yusuf became convinced that Western education and work for the secular government are strictly forbidden in Islam. On the basis of this theory, he created a complex ideology that became a source of today’s Boko Haram brutality in northern states of Nigeria.

Opis:: The article presents an analysis of the image of Abubakar Shekau, the present leader of “Boko Haram”, as well as the influence of his leadership on the organisation’s development. In the article, I present a short biography and describe the nature of Abubakar Shekau, as well as his image in the media built on the basis of “Boko Haram” propaganda movies. I also present Shekau’s way to leadership after the death of his predecessor, Muhammad Yusuf. I analyse the influence of Shekau’s image on his problems with the leadership in the organisation, as well as with gaining external allies among other militant Islamic organisations.

Opis:: W artykule omówiona została tradycja zbrojnego dżihadu w północnej Nigerii. Po uwagach wstępnych zarysowano początki muzułmańskiej myśli reformatorskiej w tym regionie. Zaprezentowano również dziewiętnastowieczny dżihad Usmana dan Fodio oraz zamieszki samozwańczego proroka Maitatsine w Kano w 1980 roku. Na tle tak zarysowanej tradycji dżihadystycznej w północnej Nigerii przedstawiono następnie najnowszą aktywność militarną Boko Haram.
In the paper I present the tradition of military Jihad in northern Nigeria, proving that it has deeply affected the activities of a terrorist organisation known as Boko Haram. The history of Islamic reform thought in the region has its roots in the 15th century. Moreover, Usman dan Fodio’s Fulani Jihad played crucial role in shaping ideas about Islamic revival in these territories, including the teachings of Muhammad Yusuf, as well as recent military activities of Boko Haram.
