Opis:
The present paper was aimed at determining the influence of particular methods and biological processes, including the application of Effective Microorganisms, on the change in characteristics of the treated dairy sewage sludge, especially when discussing the changes in the content of nutrients and macroelements. The purpose of the conducted research was to specify the possibility of using natural biological methods of dairy sewage sludge treatment and adapting it to environmental, especially farming use. Diagnostic research on the content of sewage sludge from dairy wastewater treatment plants in the north-eastern region of Poland has been conducted since the 1990s. On the basis of the results and the assessment of the possibility of agricultural utilization of dairy sewage sludge, the objectives for research on sludge treatment were established. The research facilities were located on the premises of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant in Zambrów. The choice of location for the research facilities was guided by the possibility of supplying the same sludge from dairy wastewater treatment. The excess sludge from biological dairy sewage treatment, which was aerobically stabilized in separate chambers, was used in the research. In all of the facilities where sludge was treated with biological methods, Effective Microorganisms (EM) were also used for comparison. In the years 2010-2013, the research was conducted in the research facilities (own project) constructed and launched in 2010, which were planted with phragmites and common osier. In the years 2010-2012, the research was conducted in the research facilities (own project) constructed and launched in 2010, i.e. vermiculture patches. The conducted research was comprehensive and the obtained experiment results point to the necessity of continuation and further development of research concerning the content transformation in dairy sewage sludge during its biological treatment. Establishing the role of microorganisms present in the EM formula on the processes and transformations occurring in biologically treated sewage seems to be of exceptional importance. The innovativeness of the research lay mainly in a very comprehensive range of natural biological methods of treatment applied for the same sewage sludge coming from dairy wastewater treatment plants. The conducted research points to the influence of the EM formula on vital changes in the content of macroelements in the biologically treated dairy sewage sludge. The most important impact (from the point of view of the number of parameters and the change in size as a result of applying EM formula) was observed in reference to the vermicomposting process with the use of earthworms and long-term stabilization in reed beds. The statistical assessment methods applied to the obtained results of own research (Wilcoxon and Spearman tests, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient) point to a significant influence of the EM formula on different “behavior” of many analyzed characteristics of the treated sludge.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the research from several years of exploitation of the vermiculture plots located in the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Zambrów. It is the only facility in Poland where the vermicompost from municipal sewage sludge has been produced continuously since 2004 (for 16 years). The results of tests of ready-made vermicomposts conducted regularly twice a year (32 tests) were subjected to a simple statistical analysis. The vermicompost analyses of heavy metals, biogenic compounds, organic matter and selected macroelements were compared with the requirements for mineral-organic fertilizers. In terms of the heavy metals content, the highest total content was observed in the first year of plots exploitation, i.e. in 2004, when it amounted to over 1200 mg-1 kg DM. The lowest sum content of heavy metals in vermicomposts, amounting to 398 mg-1 kg DM, was recorded in 2017. The median total content of heavy metals from all observations was 821 mg-1 kg DM. During the whole research period, the content of nutrients in vermicomposts was high, for nitrogen it ranged from 9.8 g-1 kg DM to 31.1 g-1 kg DM (median 14.3 g-1 kg DM), whereas for phosphorus it ranged from 2.1 g-1 kg DM to 14.5 g-1 kg DM (median 5.5 g-1 kg DM). The content of organic matter in the whole several-year study period was high and ranged from 21.3% DM to 59.0% DM (median 33.1% DM). The conducted research confirmed that the use of California earthworm in the process of municipal sewage sludge vermicomposting results in its good mineralization and humification, and the final product (vermicompost) may be a valuable mineral-organic fertilizer.

Opis:
The world’s noticeable population growth is associated with an increased demand for agricultural products. The search for new solutions to increase crop productivity while ensuring environmental stability is becoming a key role. One such method is the use of the biopreparations containing Effective Microorganisms. EM consist of about 80 species of selected aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, which have the ability to restore the biological balance. Professor Teruo Higa of Ryukyus University in Okinawa is the creator of Effective Microorganisms. When added to agricultural ecosystems they stimulate plant growth, improve the condition of soils affected by excessive use of chemical fertilizers allowing insoluble forms of elements to be transformed into plant-available forms and protect them from certain diseases and pests. This solution is an ecological alternative to conventional technologies and does not further pollute the ecosystem, which is crucial. Organic fertilizers in the form of EMs are made using live microorganisms they do not only deliver nutrients to the soil but also allow inactive ones to become available. With improved nutrient uptake and protection from soil pathogens, plants develop and grow better for improved yields. They contain organic matter and one or more biologically active organic compounds (amino acids, vitamins) as well as macroand microelements that stimulate plant growth and development. They provide plants with essential substances, which are naturally synthesized in many complex biochemical processes, causing energy savings that can be used for other transformations in the plant.

Opis:
This paper presents the concentrations of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals in leachates from the autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD). The leachates from ATAD installations (Dąbrowa Białostocka, Hajnówka, Pisz, Olecko, Giżycko, Wysokie Mazowieckie) located in Poland were tested. The concentrations of PAHs in samples from Pisz, Giżycko, Wysokie Mazowieckie and Hajnówka were similar to those in industrial wastewater. The cluster analysis confirmed that in sites with a higher polyethylene (p.e.) input from the industrial sector, the leachates were more contaminated with PAH compounds. In samples from Dąbrowa Białostocka, Olecko, Pisz and Hajnówka, the heavy fraction of PAHs compounds prevailed over the light fraction. Concentrations of heavy metals in leachates from ATAD varied. The Ward’s method isolated the wastewater treatment plant in Giżycko. The p.e. from the industrial sector was the highest for this facility. Also, the samples from ATAD had the highest total concentration of heavy metals (5.87 mg/l). The leachates from ATAD are returned to biological systems of municipal sewage treatment plants, where they can be combined into more toxic compounds. Biological wastewater treatment processes do not ensure the removal of PAHs and heavy metals from the wastewater. As a result, harmful compounds can get into the water or ground, polluting the environment.

Opis:
The natural environment is changing under the influence of human activity and the development of new technologies. One of the ways to restore the balance of the natural environment is to limit conventional agriculture in favour of organic farming based on the use of organic and natural fertilisers, excluding the use of chemical inputs. This action will go a long way in improving biodiversity and natural resource wealth. Fertilisation in modern agriculture is one of the most important agrotechnical procedures in deciding on the size and quality of the obtained crops. In organic farming, soil microorganisms play an important role because they influence the mineralisation of organic carbon and the humification of organic matter, thanks to which nutrients are more easily absorbed by plants. Organic fertilisers, which are Effective Microorganisms, are produced with the use of living microorganisms, which not only supply the soil with nutrients but also allow the inactive nutrients to be made available. Thanks to the better absorption of nutrients, plants develop and grow better, ensuring the best crops, the purchase prices of which from organic farming are very often much higher than in the case of traditional crops. The aim of this study was to present the possibility of using Effective Microorganisms as an ecological and economical alternative to conventional crop production systems using artificial fertilisers.

Opis:
Deterioration of the natural environment as a result of violation of its natural structures and self-regulatory mechanisms causes an urgent need to replace chemicals with effective and multidirectional biopreparations. Reduction of the amount of chemicals used in agriculture becomes possible through the use of Effective Microorganisms. This will reduce the burden on the environment. Agriculture that uses EM technology can count on help with germination rates; emergence uniformity; and crop yields, for example. EM formulations contain a mixture of different coexisting microorganisms. The following paper presents the results of own research on the use of Effective Microorganisms in seed dressing of spring wheat. It was shown that the microbial preparation EM Naturally Active affects the increase of wheat seed germination dynamics.

Assessment of the assimilability of elements contained in sewage sludge can only be carried out if their fractions, by means of which the chemical form of the element can be identified, are determined. The total content of heavy metals only makes it possible to determine whether the sludge meets the legal requirements and can be used, inter alia, for reclamation, in agriculture or for the adaptation of land to specific needs that result from waste management plans. Therefore, when planning the agricultural use of sewage sludge, attention should be paid above all to the heavy metal fractions contained in it. This is due to the fact that plants do not assimilate every form of element to the same extent. The research and analysis carried out indicate that the metals were most closely related to fractions IV and III, for example they formed connections with silicates, as well as sulphides and organic matter. The metal forms available to plants occupied a small percentage of the total heavy metal content. It was noted that with the metastable fraction of lead increased along with population equivalent. Furthermore, the population equivalent value did not affect the distribution of individual heavy metal fractions in the sludge.

Sewage sludge used for reclamation of egraded areas or in agriculture must have a certain total heavy metal content, as required by law. In practice, however, it is important to carry out a fractional analysis of the elements contained in the sludge. This activity allows to determine the chemical form of a given metal, thanks to which it is possible to assess the assimilability of elements by plants. The study proved that the fraction of certain metals in sewage sludge can vary depending on the period studied. The combination of elements with other compounds in sludge from one treatment plant can vary from month to month. Once analysis has been carried out, it should not be the basis for assessing the bioavailability of metals if sludge from a given treatment plant were to be sampled several times a year.
