Opis:
The Angle-Resolved Photoemission Electron Spectroscopy (AR PES) was applied to investigate the electronic structure of HgSe and Hg$\text{}_{1-x}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$Se crystals for (110) surface. The measured set of Angle-Resolved Energy Distribution Curves (AR EDCs) permits to determine some of the elements of the electronic band structure E(k) (energy-momentum dependence for ҐKX and ҐX directions in the Brillouin zone) for measured crystals. The Fe 3d contribution gives the states lying over the edge of the valence band of HgSe crystal (0.25 eV), and into the valence band.

Opis:
In this study, the trabecular bone was treated as a composite material that consists of a bone matrix weakened by ellipsoidal pores. Under the hypothesis that all information concerning the local properties and the microarchitecture are “encrypted” in the apparent properties of a given volume element (VE) of the bone, a method of retrieving these data was proposed. Software based on a genetic algorithm, combined with the incremental scale transition method was developed to this end. To test the approach, μCT measurements of four bone samples were performed providing their real micro-architecture. Tensors of apparent properties of the samples were next computed by numerical (finite element) homogenization method for a large range of the elastic properties of trabeculae. They were considered as the fitness function for the proposed algorithm. Very good agreement was found between the obtained and target values of the apparent elastic properties of the samples and volume fraction of pores. The approach is fast and accurate enough in comparison to the finite element homogenization. As an auxiliary result it was shown that the anisotropy of apparent elastic properties is mainly related to the microarchitecture of the bone, not to the intrinsic properties of trabeculae.

Opis:
We study the far infrared electromagnetic response of grating devices by THz time-domain spectroscopy. We first show that THz waves are efficiently injected into silicon waveguides using grating couplers. Moreover, changing the waveguide material parameters by white-light illumination allows us to strongly modify the coupling efficiency. Then we demonstrate resonant effects in segmented grating structures that act as perfect mirrors at selected wavelengths even for focused beams. About 10 periods of the grating participate in the phenomenon, nevertheless the resonance frequency width of the device remains narrow. This collection of experiments shows that millimeter-size mock-ups and THz waves can be effectively used to extrapolate the optical response of micron-size actual devices.

Opis:
Reactions between heavy-ions at various energy regimes produce many nuclear fragments which can be populated in highly excited states. The study of these fragments, detected at the end of their particle decay, is important to investigate nuclear forces and structure effects. In recent years there have been many efforts to extend these studies towards the drip-lines, i.e. to systems far from the β-stability valley, by using accelerated radioactive beams. The development of such infrastructures is accompanied by the development of more powerful detectors and associated electronics, capable to identify ions with very different sizes and kinetic energies. Here we give two examples which show how advanced arrays can contribute to the studies on nuclear phenomena. The examples come from the European FAZIA collaboration and from recent campaigns with the GARFIELD apparatus, the latter in operation at the INFN Legnaro Laboratory (Italy) where the SPES RIB facility is under construction.
