    The article analyses opera as a place which generates unhealthy excitement in men while being dangerous for women. This is the central theme of Opera, a horror directed by the Italian master of the genre, Dario Argento. The film, which tells the story of a young singer stalked by a madman, may be interpreted as a metaphor for the conservative sexual politics of the opera house. Argento’s work is an excellent introduction to the discussion that swept across American musicology in the early 1990s, about the gender analysis of European musical culture; a discussion that can be summarised in the question: is the opera house a place where women are oppressed or, on the contrary, is it a space for their emancipation?

    The aim of the article is to analyse two British contemporary operas: Thomas Adès’s Powder Her Face and Mark Anthony Turnage’s Anna Nicole from the perspective of celebrity studies. Both of these works were inspired by the biographies of celebrities – Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll’s and Anna Nicole Smith’s. The text analyses how their biographies were edited both in literary and musical terms, attempting to determine to what extent they are either pioneering or embedded in the traditions of the opera.

    Opis:
    A comparative analysis of the current state and development of spectral ellipsometry (SE) is carried out, the main limitations typical of popular configurations of measuring devices are determined. An original technical solution is proposed that allows one to create a two-source SE that implements the ellipsometry method with switching orthogonal polarization states. The measuring setup provides high precision of measurements of ellipsometric parameters Ψand Δin the spectral range of 270–2200 nm and the speed determined by the characteristics of pulsed sources with a simple ellipsometer design.As objects for experimental researches, confirming the efficiency and high precision qualities of the fabricated SE, we used a GaAs/ZnS-quarter-wave device for a CO2laser and SiO2on Si calibration plates. The optical properties of Bi2Te3-xSexfilms were investigated in the range of 270–1000 nm using a multi-angle SE. It was shown that the optical properties of Bi2Te3-xSexfilms monotonically change depending on the ratio of selenium and tellurium.
    W artykule najpierw dokonano analizy porównawczej obecnego stanu rozwoju elipsometriispektroskopowej oraz określono główne ograniczenia typowe dla popularnych konfiguracji urządzeń pomiarowych. Zaproponowano oryginalne rozwiązanie techniczne pozwalające na stworzenie dwuźródłowego elipsometu spektroskopowego z przełączaniem ortogonalnych stanów polaryzacji. Układ pomiarowy zapewnia wysoką precyzję pomiarów parametrów elipsometrycznych Ψ i Δ w zakresie spektralnym 270–2200 nm i prędkości wyznaczonej przez charakterystyki źródeł impulsowych przy prostej konstrukcji elipsometru. Jako obiekty do badań eksperymentalnych potwierdzających wydajność i wysoką precyzję proponowanego elipsometu spektroskopowego, wykorzystano ćwierćfalowy przyrząd GaAs/ZnS dla lasera CO2oraz płytki kalibracyjne SiO2na krzemie. Właściwości optyczne warstw Bi2Te3-xSexzbadano w zakresie 270–1000 nm przy użyciu wielokątowego elipsometu spektroskopowego. Wykazano, że właściwości optyczne cienkich warstw Bi2Te3-xSexzmieniają się monotonicznie w zależności od stosunku zawartości selenu i telluru.

    This paper is a summary of the results of research on the accumulation conditions of the Upper Younger Loess (LMg) in Poland and Bug loess (bg) in Ukraine from the maximum stage (MIS 2) of the Vistulian (Weichselian) Glaciation in central and eastern Europe. These studies included an analysis of the morphological (topographic) situation of the loess cover, its grain size and heavy mineral composition, the preserved structures of loess sedimentation as well as mollusc and pollen analyses of this loess. They revealed that the accumulation of Upper Younger Loess (UYL) might have been more dependent on the prevailing moisture conditions than previously thought. These conditions could have been caused by cold air masses from an ice sheet and warm air masses from the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic coming together in the Carpathians and the Holy Cross Mountains and favouring the formation of dust storms and precipitation. In this process, a loading of loess dust (formed from local rocks weathering in periglacial conditions) by atmospheric moisture particles was especially significant. The moist substrate not only favoured the periodic development of vegetation and molluscs but also enabled the interception of dust and the accumulation of an increasingly thick loess cover. Westerly and south-westerly winds predominated in the UYL as indicated by the topographic position of loess patches and the mineral composition of the studied loess. Periodically an increased air circulation from the east and northeast occurred.

    According to the latest data, CIDE -A gene plays a key role in the regulation of body weight in both humans and mice, and therefore it is regarded a potential candidate gene for human obesity. The aim of the study was to define the role of CIDEA gene in patients with dyslipidemia and symptomatic limb ischemia. Material and methods. The study group contained 28 patients, including 17 men and 11 women. Patients were enrolled in the study group, depending on the value of body mass index (BMI); there was BMI>30 for obese patients. The group included untreated patients (n=14) and patients (n=14) receiving atorvastatin 20 mg/day for at least three months prior to the initiation of the study. The control group (n=16) contained patients with no lipid disorders. A one-step isolation of RNA from lymphocytes and adipose tissue cells was carried out using the TRI method modified by Chomczyński and Sacchi. Next, gene expression was tested using real-time PCR. Results. The highest mean relative expression of CIDE -A gene occurred in patients with normal body weight. The lowest mean relative expression of CIDE-A gene was observed in obese patients with lipid disorders. A high negative correlation (r=-0.7919) of CIDE -A gene expression, depending on BMI, was reported in the group of obese patients with lipid disorders. Conclusions. Due to an important role of Cide-A protein demonstrated in the development of metabolic diseases such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and their vascular complications, CIDE -A gene and protein are potential therapeutic targets in the case of these diseases.
