    This article is a review of a book written by Mitsuyo Wada Marciano – Japanese Cinema in the Digital Age. The author of this book examines the recent developments in the Japanese film industry at the turning point in the development of digital technologies. The book seeks to overcome the western approach to the subject, reinterprets classic films and explores new trends in transnational Japanese cinema (the term was proposed by the author to explain the situation of Japanese films in the context of Asian countries).

    Opis:
    Wywiad odbył się krótko po otwarciu Sprawa jest w załatwianiu – najobszerniejszej wystawy w karierze Piotra Bosackiego (Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej Zamek Ujazdowski, 17.04– 14.06.2015). Artysta wyjaśnia w nim, w jaki sposób powstały prace prezentowane na ekspozycji, jak również wskazuje na związki pomiędzy nimi a swoją dotychczasową twórczością, na przykład w dziedzinie filmu animowanego. Bosacki tłumaczy także koncepcje, które zawarł w doktoracie Urządzenie elementów, dotyczącym dzieła sztuki pojmowanego jako byt przyrodniczy.
    The interview took place shortly after the opening of The Issue is Being Handled – the most sweeping exhibition in the career of Piotr Bosacki (Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, 17.04–14.06.2015). The artist explains how he created his new works, and shows parallels between them and previously made works, e.g. animated films, as well as offers insight into his PhD thesis Economy of Elements, discussing works of art seen as natural beings.

    This article explores two films by Kurahara Koreyoshi: Black Sun and Safari 5000, in the context of the scholars John Russell and Jonathan D. Mackintosh’s approaches to racism and so-called negrophilia in Japanese mass-culture and cinema. The authors argue that cultural stereotypes even have a negative impact on the artistically original Japanese directors, who only seem to be independent and express their thoughts freely.

    Recently the topic of transnationalism in the arts has become a popular strand of academic research. Nevertheless, this phenomenon is not an entirely new concept. In cinema it has been a constant element since its inception. One of the most important inspirations for world cinema has been the traditional cinematography of the USA, especially from the period of the great film studios, with the western being one of the most popular and imitated genres. Although it seems to be inextricably connected with the American myth of the frontier, the Wild West, the theme of expansion, and the conflict of ‘civilization’ and ‘wildness/savagery’ has reverberated outside the USA. In Japan westerns resonated on both the consumer-commercial and artistic levels. Japanese filmmakers utilized elements of the genre while weaving in some native contexts. The history of colonization of the northern island of Hokkaidō and its native inhabitants – the Ainu people – have been a point of reference for Japan-based western films. In this article, the authors analyze the western-specific genre elements in Japanese films about the Ainu people, while concentrating on the portrayal of individuals, groups and human relations on the frontier.
