Opis:
One of the most popular and widespread forms of public communication in Poland in the late Baroque, apart from the prolific private and public correspondence, were hand-written newspapers. The readers of those  papers were usually rich magnates, and also the city patriciate, who could afford to pay regular residents and informers. Through the magnate courts, news from the papers were disseminated and popularised among lower gentry and the people who were within the influence of the noble manor. Foreign news occupied much space in the hand-written papers. That clearly indicates keen interest of Polish readers of that time in the events in the “Theatrum Europaenum”. They appreciated the significance of intemational events and the mutual political and economic interdependence. Although news from the neighbouring states were preferred, one could also fmd among them some interesting details from England, France, the Netherlands, and even from the remote North America. The Baroque hand-written newspapers played the role of an important opinion-forming medium, influencing the views of the society at that time, particularly among the politically immature readers, for whom getting in touch with the wide world, open thanks to the newspapers, must have been a considerable experience. Considering the mentality of an average Polish nobleman at the tum of the 17th and 18th centuries, confmed to his everyday matters, whose diversion was a law suit against a neighbour at the tribunal, or a session of the regional landed gentry council, or rarely a trip to the Seym, one should notę what great influence could have been exerted on his psyche by written newspapers. Whereas in the case of  educated worldly people, involved in the political activities, the function of the notices was mainly informative, for the majority they were a nice distraction from their ordinary life. They quenched the provincial nobility’s thirst for knowledge, madę it possible to show off before a less  knowledgeable neighbour, or create an impression of “participation” in the actual event. The written newspapers satisfied the natural curiosity of the man of those times, they introduced him to the sphere of distant events, they enabled him to be amazed by the differences of culture and  behaviour of other nations, and sometimes to strengthen his conviction of the superiority of the Sarmatian culture. Only the maturę reader, drawing information from diverse sources - private and diplomatic correspondence, directly participating in the events - could correctly and critically evaluate the presented facts.

Franciszek Husarzewski
Marianna Szczygielska
Opis:
The article is devoted to a 18th cetnury confession-complaint, which was written down by Franciszek Husarzewski, a poor noblmen from Podlasie, a lieutnant of infantry of king August II. It is difficult to establish why in 1753 Franciszek, on four little pages, described the unhappy turns of his life: was it for the record for his descendants, or was complaining about his fate to a higher authotity. He enumerates the events of life in a few points, starting with the marriage with Marianna Szczygielska, as badly-off as himself, and taking over of a small and, as it turned out, ruined manor Szczygły, his wife's dowry. Not much is known about Franciszek. He was probably born at the turn of the 1680s and 1690s, in the family of a minor noblemen from Podlasie. In his youth Franciszek was a soldier, a lieutant of the royal infantry, but most of his life he was trying his luck at the courts of more wealthy noblemen. On the 28th of February, 1713 Franciszek married young Marianna Szczygielska, dauther of  Konstancja Szczygielska and Tomasz Szczygielski: her mother was a douther of a court official of Podlasie. Marianna and Franciszek led a life full of hardship, worries, and conflicts with the  neighbours, in the times of the Northern War. The analyzed text displays not only the tragic figure of Franciszek Husarzewski, strugging with poverty and dishonest neighbours all of his life, but also reality of the Saxon rule in Poland. poverty of minor noblemen, especially in such regions as Podlasie, who owned small manors, usually indebted and ruined by the war, forced them toi try other ways of making a living: it was usually military or court service, in the armies of aristocrats or as officials in gentry's estates.

Development of informal cliental bonds which resulted in the opportunity to gain importance in public domain, were one but not the only goal of this type of social relationship. Material or more often prestige support opened doors to eminent family affinities, paved the way to political and military carriers, won friends and allies, and in this way, guaranteed stability in difficult Saxon times. Political-military and economic situation, presence of enemies, war destruction, natural disasters of those days influenced the durability of such agreements. The person of the protector, his protective means (affinities, finances, offices held, closeness with the court) as well as temperamental traits (accessibility, joviality, openness) proved to be important. A separate issue was cultural patronage in the form of protection over a narrow artistic milieu of the Republic of Poland (architects, painters, musicians, printers, newspaper editors), which was a testimony to mental changes of the age. Or the long-time developed religious patronage over religious institutions and their representatives (monastic congregations and brotherhoods, churches, chapels). The reflection of the stiffening structure of the informal social bonds can be found in all written sources. The most interesting example of the patron – client relationship and the resulting supplicatory attitude are epistolary sources, which in a superb though slightly exaggerated way show the mentality of both sides. Those letters were a ritual cultivated throughout generations, where under complex ceremoniousness and verbiage the actual goals and hopes of both sides appeared. The visible division between the supplicant (client) and the favour-lavishing addressee (patron) outlined in the letters was preserved irrespectively of the status and social position of the correspondents.

Opis:
Mercy was one of the main ideas in the social and religious life in the modern period. A significant role in propagating this idea was played by the parable of the Last Judgement. Underlaid with fear of eternal damnation, it opened the venue for salvation, thanks to the belief in the unlimited love of God and good deeds. The idea of good deeds practised in form of alms, pious bequests and widely understood charity as conditions of eternal life, became for Catholics a way leading to salvation. The proof is provided by numerous sources from the area of past funeral culture, such as last wills, books of good death or funeral orations. Mercy appears as religious imperative resulting from the belief in God’s love and power of absolution as well as a form of compassion towards the suffering of a fellow human being, which gives rise to the willingness to disinterestedly help the sick, the poor, the suffering and – most of all – the souls of sinners awaiting aid in purgatory. This idea should be treated as a form of individual charity of the testators, in which individual generosity strengthened by religious motivation became a specific apotheosis of poverty. In last wills we shall find yet another form of mercy in the shape of mutual relations between the testator and his relatives, in whom he seeks forgiveness for inflicted harms and mercifully forgives harms he suffered from them. A separate category of mercy found in last wills is the Biblical character of the Prodigal Son, seeking forgiveness from his own father, who – like God the Judge and Saviour – shows his mercy and lets him back into the paternal house.

Polish mentality and stereotypes in early 18th century
Opis:
Handwritten newssheets played a major role in the processes of information transfer in the 18th-century Poland. They not only supplied the reading public with information about current political and social events but also played a considerable role in the shaping of social attitudes, manners and norms (including some stereotypes and prejudices). Z kraju i ze świata was quite selective in its coverage: important events could be sidelined if it was thought that they were of little interest to its readers. The contents of the newssheet is usually clearly divided into ‘foreign news’, ie. dispatches from Europe and overseas, and ‘home news’, especially important from the point of view of the Polish reader.

Construction of a woman’s biography, which preserved the memory of a person, is an arduous task because of lack of sources and it is never completed work. Biography of Magdalena Lubomirska could be based only on her written will, and not numerous correspondence of her mother Teresa Tarło and brother Jan Tarło. We even don't know the date of Magdalena's birth or the exact date of her death. The only document, the author of which is Magdalena, is her last will.

Opis:
Everyday life and festival time, when the humdrum routine is suspended, are two categories of reality which correlate with different types of response. The value of the latter category was by no means missed by the 18th-century Polish editors when they compiled the contents of their avvisi. These handwritten newssheets bear witness to both their editors’ and readers’ preference for all things extraordinary, such as spectacles, pageants, ceremonies, uncommon or shocking political events. Or, in other words, ‘otherness’, ‘strangeness’ and anything that changed or challenged the familiar patterns of everyday life defi ned their information canon

Polish newssheets of the 18th century not only had a great infl uence on the attitudes and patterns of behaviour of their readers but also imprinted the stereotypes they peddled into the social consciousness of the Poles. A number of the newssheet editors had a considerable knowledge of both national and international politics, which they saw primarily in terms of waging wars and diplomatic gamesmanship. They tested their own opinions against the views of their readers thus helping to spread perceptions and attitudes that were already functioning in some sections of the public opinion or, alternately, popularizing new patterns of behaviour (funded on the ideas of pacifi sm and toleration). In either case, they helped to wake up in their readers an interest in the wider world
