Opis:
Application of quantum cascade lasers in NO and $N_2O$ sensor is described. Cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy was used for this purpose. The detection was performed at vibronic molecular transitions in spectral regions of 5.23-5.29 μm and 4.46-4.54 μm for NO and $N_2O$, respectively. In order to avoid interferences by the gases contained in atmosphere $(H_2O, CO_2)$ the lines of 5.263 μm for NO and 4.530 μm for $N_2O$ were selected. Our two channel sensor is designated for simultaneous detection of both compounds. Each channel consists of single mode quantum cascade laser, optical cavity, and a photodetection module. The lasers were precisely tuned to the wavelength of interest. Optical cavities were built with spherical mirrors of high reflectance. The signals from the cavities outputs were registered with specially developed low noise detection modules.

A nuclear microprobe at the IFJ PAN in Cracow has found numerous applications in different fields of research, mostly in biophysics, medical sciences, geology, and material research. In order to extend the research possibilities, a new X-ray microprobe was constructed. This new microprobe consists of three experimental lines dedicated to: (i) X-ray irradiation of biological specimens, (ii) elemental analysis of samples by micro X-ray fluorescence or total reflection X-ray fluorescence methods and (iii) computer microtomography. In this paper the computer microtomography line was described. The line consists of an open type Hamamatsu L9191 X-ray tube with microfocusing to about 2 μm, a high resolution X-ray sensitive CCD camera, and a precise goniometer composed of six piezoelectric motors. Depending on the required X-ray energy, the Hamamatsu tube is used with Ti, Mo, Ag, or W targets. A small focus size and short focus-to-object distance enable to obtain images of samples with a magnification of more than 1000× and resolution of the order of 2 μm. The computer microtomography measurements are carried out using home developed codes combined with commercial software. Details of the microprobe construction and preliminary results of the computer microtomography experiments are presented.

Opis:
In the paper, several applications of Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (CEAS) for trace mater detection are described. NO2 sensor was constructed using this technique with blue-violet lasers (395–440 nm). The sensor sensitivity reaches the level of single ppb and it was applied in security portal. For detection of two gases at the same time, two-channel sensor was constructed. Used method allows a significant reduction in the cost of optoelectronic CEAS sensor designed to measure of concentrations of many gases simultaneously. Successful monitoring of N2O and NO in the air requires high precision mid-infrared spectroscopy. The constructed sensors are able to measure concentration at ppb level. These sensors might be used for monitoring of atmospheric purity as well as for detection of explosives.

Opis:
The majority of studies on leeches are related to: internal and external morphology. Fewer molecular research projects focus on molecular studies and karyology. The latter are needed to explain the evolutionary and systematic issues. Karyotypes for 22 species of Hirudinida have hitherto been determined, including: 8 species belonging to the Glossiphoniidae family, 3 species of Piscicolidae, 7 of Erpobdellidae, 1 of Haemopidae and 3 of Hirudinidae. The chromosome number vary among individual groups of leeches. Within Glossiphoniidae the chromosome diploid number ranges from 14 to 32, in Piscicolidae from 20 to 32, in Erpobdelliformes from 16 to 22, and in Hirudiniformes from 24 to 28. The karyological analyses were used to show phylogenetic relations between main groups of Hirudinida, and the diploid number of 16 was suggested to be a primitive value. This number tends to increase as the evolution progresses. The phylogeny scheme of leeches proposed by Mann shows the Glossiphoniidae as primitive to the Piscicolidae, and Hirudinidae as giving rise to the Haemopidae and Erpobdellidae. Those hypotheses are herewith confronted with morphological, molecular, karyological, ecological and behavioral data.

Prezentowany system może być stosowany do kontroli wejść w strategicznych obiektach państwowych i wojskowych oraz użyteczności publicznej, szczególnie o dużym nasileniu ruchu, takich jak lotniska, porty, dworce, stacje metra, itp.
This paper presents a security gateway that allows detection of trace amounts of selected explosives. Most explosives are nitro compounds containing the group-NO2 (Fig. 1) which decompose emitting trace amounts of nitrogen oxides. The optoelectronic sensor designed to detect nitrogen dioxide operates on a basis of the Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (CEAS) method. The CEAS technique is a modification of Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) technique. It is based on off-axis arrangement of an optical cavity. The gas concentration in this method is determined by measuring the intensity of optical radiation reaching the detector (photomultiplier tube) caused by absorption of radiation λ = 416 nm, Fig. 2, of the gas filling the optical cavity. Fig. 3 shows the measuring system. Preliminary measurement results are illustrated in Fig. 6 which shows the dependence of the decay time of optical radiation in the optical cavity on the concentration of NO2 in the gas filling the cavity. The NO2 detection limit is set at 1 ppb, with the uncertainty of 10%. The presented portal is likely to become a very effective tool for explosives detection. Therefore it could be used to control entries of important objects e.g. airports, government buildings, skyscrapers, military bases, and so on. Opis:
The paper presents opportunities of cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy technique application in nitrogen oxides (NO_{x}) detection. In this method the concentration of an absorbing gas is determined by measure of decay time of the light pulse trapped in an optical cavity. The measurements are not sensitive to fluctuation of both laser power and photodetector sensitivity. The cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy technique is a modification of cavity ring down spectroscopy technique where the off-axis adjustment of the resonator is used. NO_{x} detection is carried out in the visible and infrared range. The signal is registered with a developed low noise photoreceiver. Features of the presented sensor show that it is possible to build a portable trace gases sensor. Its sensitivity could be comparable with chemical detectors. Such a system has several advantages: relatively low price, small size and weight, and detection possibility of other gases.

This paper presents a set of diagnostics dedicated to PF-24 – new medium size – plasma focus (PF) device built and operated at the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN). The PF-24 can operate at energy level up to 93 kJ and charging voltage up to 40 kV. Each condenser is connected with a specially designed spark gap with a very small jitter, which ensures a high efficiency and a low current rise time. The working parameters of PF-24 generator make it a suitable tool for testing new detection systems to be used in fusion research. Four types of such detection systems are presented in this article: three diagnostic systems used to measure electric quantities (Rogowski coil, magnetic probe, capacitance probe), neutron counter based on beryllium activation, fast neutron pinhole camera based on small-area BCF-12 plastic scintillation detectors and high-speed four-frame soft X-ray camera with microchannel plate.
