The article describes the stylistic shape of biblical Polish language in the fi rst half of 16th century. This stylistic aspect has been analyzed in two perspectives. The fi rst one – the contemporary reception – shows several opinions of scientists, who work on the language of old Polish religious texts; the second perspective is the current language custom from the period of the texts’ creation. Materials for the second type of analysis were excerpted from the stylistic and language comments made upon creating the biblical texts by their authors and from the discussion led between Jan Sandecki-Malecki, Stanisław Murzynowski and Jan Seklucjan.

The authors have recognized that to create the novel’s characters, both individual and collective, Henryk Sienkiewicz willingly uses the metalinguistic statements. The analysis included nearly 50 metalinguistic statements present both in the narrative part and in the dialogs. In the center of those statements there are lexemes speech, word, language. The authors searched for the answers to two fundamental questions in what way the metalinguistic remarks:1) create the reliable, medieval reality presented in the The Knights of the Cross?2) remarks update the novel’s problems?Using the metalinguistic notes to create the historical reality of the novel was the deliberate and effective action. Thanks to it Sienkiewicz illustrates the ethnic diversity of medieval Poland inhabitants, he also shows the difficulty in communication between representatives of different nations. Thanks to metalinguistic remarks the author of a novel indicates the role of the Latin language in the former custom; he also shows the language specificity of the different society layers. Metalinguistic comments reveal the parallels between the fictional reality of the novel and the reality of the times in which Henryk Sienkiewicz lived and worked. In metalinguistic notes the clearly negative evaluation of the German language and its users is shown. The linguistic situation in the State of the Teutonic Knights, which is shown in the novel, indicates similarities to situation under Prussian rule in the nineteenth century.

The article discusses urban place names in Łódź in three historical period when Poland was not independent: during the partitions, the First World War, and the Second World War. The analysis focused on ways of German and Russian intervention into urban place naming in Łódź. It describes naming techniques (translations of Polish names, adaptations to foreign phonetic and writing systems, renaming) and the goals of foreign intervention into Polish place naming. The conclusion is that Russian and German interventions during the partitions and the first world war were mainly aimed at cultural assimilation, and consisted in use of Russified and Germanized forms. During the Second World War, on the other hand, Germans were consistently instilling elements of Nazi-German culture and history in place names.

W artykule przedmiotem opisu i analizy są cechy językowo-stylistyczne polskich powieści brukowych pochodzących z końca XIX oraz początku XX wieku. Powieści brukowe, należące do tzw. literatury drugorzędnej (niższej klasy), miały zaspokajać ludyczne oraz kulturowe potrzeby czytelnicze średnich i niższych warstw społecznych. W powieściach tych dominuje styl prosty, wyrastający z realizacji idei werystycznych, w myśl których teksty miały być zwierciadłem rzeczywistości, odwoływać się do mentalności, obyczajów, kultury i języka czytelników. Urealnieniu świata przedstawionego służyły m.in. onimy (imiona, nazwiska, przezwiska postaci i nazwy topograficzne) oraz bogaty zbiór środków językowych typowych dla komunikacji potocznej. W stylistyce powieści brukowych obecne są także elementy właściwe stylowi artystycznemu (poetyckiemu), które nadają im bardziej wyszukany, literacki charakter. Miały one kreować wyobrażenie o literackości u przeciętnego, prostego czytelnika.
The subject of description and analysis in this article are the linguistic-stylistic features of the Polish pulp fiction novels of the late 19th and early 20th century. Pulp fiction novels, which belong to the so called secondary (or lower class) literature, were intended to satisfy the ludic and cultic reading needs of the middle and lower social layer. The pulp fiction novels are dominated by a simple style, sprouting from the implementation of the veristic ideas, according to which the texts were to reflect the reality, refer to the mentality, customs, culture, and language of the readers. In order to make the depicted world real, the onyms were used (names, surnames, nicknames of the characters and the topographical names) as well as the abundance of linguistic means typical of the colloquial communication. In the stylistics of the pulp fiction novels present are also elements characteristic of the artistic (poetic) style, that make them more sophisticated or literary. They were intended to create in an average common reader the idea of what literariness is.

The stylistic analysis of the memoirs by Zofia Stryjeńska – which are an excellent source to depict the vivid, informal, private Polish language used by an educated person who perfectly knows the standard version of the language – is aiming at revealing those idiolect features of the author that are differentiating and classifying in character on the one hand and on the other identifying and individualising, which altogether show the creative attitude of the author towards the language.

Wybrane teksty statutów synodów diecezjalnych posłużyły autorom do wyodrębnienia cech leksykalno-stylistycznych charakterystycznych dla religijnych tekstów urzędowych. Ustalono, że badane teksty łączą w sobie cechy ogólnego stylu urzędowego z elementami języka religijnego. Ze stylem urzędowym łączy je specjalistyczne słownictwo (terminologia administracyjno-prawna, kancelaryzmy, dyrektywy), analityczne struktury składniowe, a także cechy gatunkowe znamienne dla dokumentów urzędowych. Religijny aspekt omawianej odmianki zawiera się w wyspecjalizowanym słownictwie (terminologia religijna oraz leksyka ogólnoreligijna), a także w licznych odwołaniach do łaciny. Zaobserwowano też wpływ innych odmian języka religijnego (żargonu środowiskowego, języka kaznodziejskiego, tekstów modlitewnych itd.).
Selected texts of the diocesan synods’ statutes served the authors to identify the lexical and stylistic features characteristic of the official religious texts. It was determined that the analysed texts combine the features of the general official style and the elements of the religious language. The features of the official style include the technical vocabulary (the administrative and legal terminology, the formal words, the directives), the analytic syntactic structures, and the specific traits distinctive of the official documents. The religious aspect of the discussed language variant is constituted by the specialized vocabulary (the religious terminology, the general religious lexis), and the frequent references to Latin. The influence of the other religious language variants has also been observed (the community jargon, the preacher’s language, the texts of the prayers, etc.).

Podstawą rozważań jest materiał językowy zaczerpnięty z Dzienników Marii Dąbrowskiej, zawierający wypowiedzi pisarki o jej wrażliwości na muzykę i sztuki plastyczne oraz przykłady świadczące o wpływie tych sztuk na sposób kształtowania wypowiedzi literackiej. Analiza materiału ujawniła, że kształt językowy Dzienników ilustruje wpływ znajomości dzieł malarskich na technikę obrazowania; w mniejszym zakresie pokazuje inspiracje muzyczne.
The analysis has been based on the linguistic material taken from the Diaries of Maria Dąbrowska containing statements of the writer about her sensitivity to music and the fine arts, and examples testifying the influence of those arts on the way the writer shaped her literary expression. The analysis has revealed that the linguistic form of the Diaries illustrates the influence of Dąbrowska’s familiarisation with some paintings on her technique of depiction; to a lesser degree it reveals her inspiration caused by music.

The aim of the article is a reconstruction of the image of the city and its inhabitantsdone on the basis of nearly seventy songs found in Łódź folklore texts from the interwarperiod.The regionality of folklore texts is shown in particularly strong way in the image ofthe city and its space. It is indicated by local names, authentic urban object names: cafes,restaurants and also by quite realistic image of the city.In the contrary, the picture of two main social classes of inhabitants – the factoryworkers and the outcasts of the society – is rather standardized, typical and generalized.If we compare the texts from Łódź to the texts from Warsaw, striking similaritywill be easy to observe. The resemblance is obvious in the naming (personal names), thelanguage used by the social classes, and in the way of evaluating the social attitude – particularly in relation to the criminal world.

The subject of a discussion in the article are internally motivated names present in the history of Łódź’s naming. The internally motivated names are based on the names which functioned chronologically earlier in the area. Taking into account the relationships between the primary and secondary names, on both formal and incentive levels, two types of internally motivated names have been distinguished and discussed: 1. names having a formal relationship with the primary names, and 2. names having only basic, semantic relationship with the primary names.

The main questions raised in the article is the existence of individual, personal kind of an academic style. The author analyses academic texts of Aleksander Brückner and Stanisław Rospond – splendid scientists, active in the 1st half of the 20th century. The analysis of lexical, phraseological and syntactical level shows that all expressivisms, colloquialisms, ordinarities found in the texts belonged to the stylistic convention of the times. They were not connected with popular character of the texts. Individual characteristics are to be found in the range and the use of stylistic means which are beyond the linguistic canon typical for contemporary academic texts.
