Opis:: The paper presents the one e-content example used as a pattern solution for distance learning resources development at the University of Silesia. The Intranet technologies were used as networking services for training processes control and future distribution services at the University of Silesia distance learning network. The given solution provides the development team at Distance Learning Technologies Centre with various unifications and library units of four courses that are under development at present in Department of Computer Systems, institute of Informatics. All the applications are running on MAMS (Multimedia Applications Management Shell) environment as a common frame structure for every e-lesson. The MAMS applications are provided with several mechanisms that allow monitoring the user knowledge level and study progress. Various examples of the applications layout and their characteristic features are presented in this contribution.

Opis:: The paper deals with new training technologies development based on approach to distance learning website, implemented in the laboratory of a Traffic Engineering study branch at Faculty of Transport. The discussed computing interface allows students complete knowledge of traffic controllers' architecture and machine language programming fundamentals. These training facilities are available at home; at their remote terminal. The training resources consist of electronic / computer based training; guidebooks and software units. The laboratory provides the students with an interface entering into simulation packages and programming interfaces, supporting the web training facilities. The courseware complexity selection is one of the most difficult factors in intelligent training unit's development. The dynamically configured application provides the user with his individually set structure of the training resources. The trainee controls the application structure and complexity, from the time he started. For simplifying the training process and studying activities, several unifications were provided. The introduced ideas need various standardisations, simplifying the e-learning units' development and application control processes [8], [9]. Further training facilities development concerns virtual laboratory environment organisation in laboratories of Transport Faculty.
Artykuł opisuje wybrane aspekty rozwoju nowych technik kształcenia opartych o technologie internetowe. Opisane prace zostały zaprojektowane i zaimplementowane w laboratorium Cyfrowych Systemów Sterowania, na specjalności Inżynieria Ruchu, kierunku Transport w Politechnice Śląskiej. Opisane elementy interfejsu użytkownika pozwalają dokonać indywidualnego doboru tematyki kursu / lekcji w zakresie podstaw architektury sterowników ruchu drogowego oraz zasad ich programowania na poziomie języka maszynowego. Oferowany serwis kształcenia można udostępnić do pracy domowej studenta; na jego odległym terminalu. Zasoby systemu zawierają zarówno elementy elektronicznego kształcenia jak i przewodniki tradycyjne, wspomagające samodzielną pracę studenta. Portal komunikacyjny udostępnia studentowi blok symulacyjny sterownika wraz z narzędziami samodzielnej konfiguracji lekcji. Poziom złożoności lekcji zostaje dopasowany do aktualnego poziomu wiedzy użytkownika. To jedno z najtrudniejszych zagadnień projektowania inteligentnych systemów kształcenia. Dynamicznie konfigurowanie aplikacji umożliwia bieżące sterownie poziomem złożoności lekcji. Interakcje ćwiczącego sterują na bieżąco stopniem złożoności lekcji, od chwili jej uruchomienia. Dla uproszczenia procesów kształcenia oraz aktywności studenta zaproponowano szereg unifikacji systemu, prowadzące do uproszczenia stopnia złożoności dalszych aplikacji, w systemu kształcenia na odległość. Dalsze prace na tym polu będą rozwijane w kierunku Uniwersytetu Wirtualnego w laboratoriach Wydziału Transportu.

Opis:: This qualitative research looked into the views and opinions of the different stakeholders in the shipping/manning on the shortage of qualified and competent officers to handle modern ships of today. This shortage poses the biggest challenge shipping companies are currently facing. An in-depth interview of the participants was utilized in the data gathering for this study. It also looked into what maritime schools can do to help solve this problem. Findings showed that there are many sectors involved and have contributed to the present shortage of officers, namely: the shipping companies, the manning companies, the maritime schools, government agencies and the attitude of the seafarers themselves, not to mention the continuing demand for new vessels brought about by globalization of trade and industry.

Opis:: The paper introduces the need of improving skills level of students using Internet network. The solution has been discussed on an example with remarks for the medical diagnostic devices. The laboratory, which is not large enough, for performing all needed training courses, can be provided the trainee after their main work hours. The elaborated solution is supported by various training interfaces, provided by standard Learning Management System (LMS) and the applications controlling machine called Multimedia Applications Management Shell (MAMS). The example platforms were supported by networking Debian Linux services and an open-source technology that is used freely, by many developers.

Opis:: Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy at X-band (9.3 GHz) is used as the tool of optimalization of storage of thermally sterilized aminoglycoside antibiotic - streptomycin. Thermal sterilization at different conditions was performed according to the norms. Changes in free radicals system of this drug during storage after sterilization were detected. Lineshape analysis and microwave saturation of EPR spectra were done. Free radical concentrations were determined. Microwave saturation EPR analysis is proposed as useful method to determine the best conditions of storage of sterilized drugs.

Opis:: The paper deals with a new training technologies' development based on distance learning web–services, implemented for laboratory of a Pharmacy Study branch at Medical University in Katowice. Rozwiązania aktualnie stosowane w pojazdach opierają pomiary wyłącznie na bieżącej wartości opisanych parametrów, najczęsciej tylko temperatury. Artykuł proponuje rozszerzenie pomiarów o wilgotność w ciągu sześciu godzin dla dokładniejszej prognozy i uwzględnienia szybkozmiennych warunków pogodowych.
The papers presents the hardware solution description and protocols used in automotive industry. Additionally, the paper proposes hardware-software model for black ice detection by external temperature and humidity level measurement. The solutions, used nowodays, are focusing mostly on current temperature reading. Paper proposes to extend the readings by humidity level. Moreover, the histories of features values are created within last 6 hours to define threats on road more precisely based on weather conditional variance.

Opis:: The weather, especially its fluctuations, has a significant impact on the road driving conditions - leads to a number of collisions and as a consequence to hundreds of deaths, thousands injured and millions of economic losses. The article briefly specifies the methods of particular weather elements description which can be found in literature and their impact on the road conditions. Additionally, weather parameters analysis was performed. On its basis adaptation of a neural network to predict temperature changes and the possibility of icing was proposed. The tests and results obtained by using the designed neural network could be used in fuzzy expert systems.
W artykule poruszono zagadnienia związane z predykcją warunków meteorologicznych, w ujęciu bezpieczeństwa ruchu drogowego. W pierwszej części pracy podsumowano najważniejsze wnioski oraz rezultaty przeprowadzonych studiów literaturowych oraz, na ich podstawie, dokonano obserwacji określonych artefaktów w zdefiniowanym zbiorze danych statystycznych. Dane obejmowały parametry meteorologiczne ze stacji pogodowej, informacje o lokalnych kolizjach drogowych oraz dane modelu predykcji zjawisk atmosferycznych. W finalnej części pracy przestawiono przykładowe implementacje sieci neuronowych wykorzystane celu predykcji omawianych zagrożeń pogodowych.

Opis:: Publikowane w literaturze wyniki badan dowodza, e warunki pogodowe maja znaczny wpływ na zachowania kierujacych, a co za tym idzie take na parametry strumieni pojazdów i efektywnosc sterowania ruchem drogowym. Istnieje zatem potrzeba prognozowania wpływu warunków pogodowych na zmiany efektywnosci procedur sterowania ruchem drogowym. Chcac umoliwic taka prognoze, niezbedne jest opracowanie modelu ruchu, który bedzie uwzgledniał wpływ czynników pogodowych. W tym celu zaproponowano modyfikacje automatu komórkowego Nagela-Schreckenberga (NaSch). Dokonano rozszerzenia definicji modelu NaSch o elementy, które pozwalaja odwzorowac funkcjonowanie sygnalizacji swietlnej na skrzyowaniu oraz dostosowac predkosc maksymalna pojazdów do warunków pogodowych. Przedstawione w artykule wyniki symulacji dotycza wpływu zmiany warunków pogodowych na straty czasu i liczby zatrzyman pojazdów obserwowane na wlocie skrzyowania z sygnalizacja swietlna.
The research presented in many papers suggests that weather conditions have major influence on drivers’ behaviour; leading to parameters change of vehicles streams in road network. Therefore, there is a need to forecast the influence of the weather conditions on traffic control procedures. To make it possible the weather sensitive traffic model has to be proposed. Nagel-Schreckenberg (NaSch) model were used as a base for a proposed model. The model were enhanced by three equations to simulate traffic signal control and to adjust the maximum speed representing various weather conditions. Results of performed simulations show changes in number of stops and stop delays at the intersection approach in various weather conditions.

Opis:: Modern Intelligent Transport Systems incorporate the traffic control strategies that are based not only on long term traffic analysis and forecasts, but also on the real time events detection like accidents or high congestion. The flexibility of these systems depends on accurate and precise data set describing the current state of road network. To estimate it, the data from various sources like: video surveillance, induction loops or vehicles itself (Vehicle to Infrastructure communication -V2I) is gathered. Excluding detection errors, the video surveillance data is a reliable source of general information about the traffic flow. On the other hand, the vehicle communication can provide less reliable, but more detailed information about a particular vehicle like: its engine state or planned manoeuvre. Unreliable or forged C2I information can be used to disturb traffic or to gain a higher priority on the road. The paper reviews the fusion algorithms that are used to merge data from video tracking algorithms and vehicular networks. Based on the survey, a weighted fusion algorithm is proposed that estimates the acquired data reliability. The algorithm uses the video surveillance data as a filter for C2I communication. Finally, applications for microscopic traffic models and safety issues are taken into consideration.

Opis:: Efficient management of ambulance utilisation is a vital issue for life saving. Knowledge of the amount of time needed for an ambulance to get to the hospital and when it will be available for a new task, can be estimated using modern Intelligent Transport Systems. Their main feature is an ability to simulate the state of traffic not only in long term, but also the real time events like accidents or high congestion, using microscopic models. The paper introduces usage of Quantum Computing paradigm to propose a quantum model of road traffic, which can track the state of traffic and estimate the travel time of vehicles. Model, if run on quantum computer can simulate the traffic in vast areas in real time. Proposed model was verified against the cellular automata model. Finally, application of quantum microscopic traffic models for ambulance vehicles was taken into consideration.

Opis:: Different groups of free radicals exist in biological material like animal tissues or plants parts. The processes like heating or cooling creates additional types of free radicals groups in this organic matter, due to changes in chemical bonds. The paper proposes a method to determine types and concentrations of different groups of free radicals in the matter processed in various temperatures. The method extracts the spectrum of free radicals using electron paramagnetic resonance with the microwave power of 2.2 mW. Then an automatic method to find a best possible fit using limited number of theoretical mathematical functions is proposed. The match is found using spectrum filtration, and a genetic algorithm implementation supported by a Gradient Method. The obtained results were compared against the samples prepared by an expert. Finally, some remarks were given and new possibilities for future research were proposed.

Opis:: This paper presents a medical diagnosis support system based on an ensemble of single parameter k–NN classifiers [1]. System was verified on a database containing real blood test results of diagnosed patients with a liver fibrosis. This dataset contains problems typical to a real medical data – especially missing values. Paper also describes the process of selecting a subset of parameters used for further evaluation (feature selection/elimination algorithm). Complete database contains many parameters, but not all are important for diagnosis, thus eliminating them is an important step. A comparison of proposed method of classification and feature selection with methods known from literature has also been presented.

Opis:: Wielopierścieniowe węglowodory aromatyczne (WWA) są trudno rozkładalnymi zanieczyszczeniami, które negatywne oddziałują na środowisko glebowe. Związki te zmieniają właściwości fizyczne, chemiczne i biologiczne gleby, powodują zmniejszenie ilości łatwo przyswajalnych składników pokarmowych oraz utrudniają wymianę powietrza między glebą a atmosferą. W pracy badano wpływ zastosowania nadtlenku wapnia (120÷240 mgCaO₂ /kg) wprowadzonego do gleby zanieczyszczonej fluorantenem (1,5 mg/kg) na jej toksyczność w stosunku do wybranych roślin (rzeżucha, gorczyca i sorgo). Przeprowadzone badania nie dały jednoznacznej odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy nadtlenek wapnia wpływa pozytywnie na wzrost i rozwój roślin rosnących na glebach zanieczyszczonych węglowodorami. Zaobserwowano, że dodatek nadtlenku wapnia do gleby zawierającej fluoranten stymulował usuwanie tego węglowodoru, jednakże stwierdzono również stymulację wzrostu korzeni roślin w próbkach gleby z dodatkiem samego nadtlenku wapnia. Niemniej jednak nie wykazano, czy obserwowany efekt był wynikiem stresu oksydacyjnego, czy też poprawy warunków środowiskowych.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hardly decomposable pollutants that adversely affect soil environment. These compounds alter physical, chemical and biological soil properties, lead to reduction in the amount of easily digestible nutrients and impede gas exchange between soil and atmosphere. In this study, the effect of calcium peroxide (120–240 mgCaO₂ /kg) was tested in soil contaminated with fluoranthene (1.5 mg/kg) on its toxicity towards selected plants (root cress, mustard and sorghum). Our results did not give an unambiguous answer to the question whether effect of calcium peroxide on growth and development of plants growing on soils contaminated with hydrocarbons was positive. It was observed that calcium peroxide added to the soil with fluoranthene enhanced its removal. However, stimulation of root growth was also observed in soil samples with calcium peroxide alone. It was difficult to assess whether the observed effect was a result of oxidative stress or environmental conditions improvement.

Opis:: The medical data and its classification have to be treated in particular way. The data should not be modified or altered, because this could lead to false decisions. Most state-of-the-art classifiers are using random factors to produce higher overall accuracy of diagnosis, however the stability of classification can vary significantly. Medical support systems should be trustworthy and reliable, therefore this paper proposes fusion of multiple classifiers based on artificial Neural Network (ANN). The structure selection of ANN is performed using granular paradigm, where granulation level is defined by ANN complexity. The classification results are merged using voting procedure. Accuracy of the proposed solution was compared with state-of-the-art classifiers using real medical data coming from two medical datasets. Finally, some remarks and further research directions have been discussed.
