Opis:
The paper examined water resources insecurity arising from climatic change and variability, coupled with increased population and economic development in in Yewa basin, with a view to understanding the relationship between climatic variables and hydrological parameters operating within the basin. Thus, the study entails assessment of the effects of climate change and variability on water resources and its implication on both the physical environment and the hydrological regime, using the water evaluation and planning (WEAP) system model. Data employed included water supply and demand for Domestic, Commercial, Industrial and Agriculture, as well as climatic data (rainfall and Temperature) and runoff. As revealed by the Scenario fabrication, 45.24% of the annual water requirement within Yewa Basin is not met, with water potentials of Annual mean discharge of 3682.46 m3/s (±830.1) and Annual mean rainfall of 1106.26m (±475.25), and with coefficients of variation of 40.88 and 73.73, respectively. This deficit calls for an appropriate water resources management mechanism to be put into use in Yewa Basin.

Opis:
Abundant rainfall areas promote sediment yield at both sub-watershed and watershed scale due to soil erosion and increase siltation of river channel, but it can be curtailed through planned urbanization. The urbanization of Skudai watershed is analysed from historical and future perspective. A GIS-based model (Hydrological Simulation Programme-FORTRAN-HSPF) is used to modelled sediment flow using basin-wide simulation, and the output result is utilized in evaluating sediment yield reduction due to increased urbanization by swapping multiple temporal land-use of decadent time-steps. The analysis indicates that sediment yield reduces with increase urban built-up and decrease forest and agricultural land. An estimated 12 400 tons of sediment will be reduced for every 27% increase in built-up areas under high rainfall condition and 1 490 tons at low rainfall. The sensitivity analysis of land-use classes shows that built-up, forest and barren are more sensitive to sediment yield reduction compared to wetland and agricultural land at both high and low rainfall. The result of the study suggests that increased urbanization reduced sediment yield in proportion to the rainfall condition and can be used as an alternative approach for soil conservation at watershed scale independent of climate condition.
Duże opady atmosferyczne sprzyjają przemieszczaniu się osadów w skali zlewni w wyniku erozji gleby, powodując zamulanie koryta rzecznego. Procesy te można ograniczyć przez planową urbanizację. Urbanizację zlewni Skudai analizowano w perspektywie historycznej (przedziały 10-letnie) i w kontekście przyszłych zmian. Do modelowania przepływu osadu użyto programu symulacji hydrologicznej Fortran (HSPF), a wyniki modelowania wykorzystano do oceny zmniejszenia ilości osadu związanej z urbanizacją.

Opis:
Performance characterization of some selected conventional cook stoves in South Eastern Nigeria had been carried out. Three conventional cook stoves (3-stone stove, charcoal stove and sawdust stove) were selected and evaluated. Their performances were compared with those of improved stove. The results show that the time spent in cooking 1 Kg of rice/(yam) is significantly different in all the conventional stoves under test; (maximum 0.75 (0.44) kg/hr for 3-stone stove and minimum 0.61 (0.35) hr/kg for charcoal). Fuel utilization also differs for instance lesser quantity of charcoal would be required to cook the same quantity of food on the charcoal stove than the open fire stove. Also the specific fuel consumption value of charcoal stove is lesser than all other stoves. The 3-stone stove have higher specific fuel consumption values indicative of more fuel consumption but lower thermal efficiency. This indicates a poor performance when compared to other improved stoves such as kerosene stove with higher thermal efficiency of 64.38 %.

Opis:
Rapid urban growth and expansion pose daunting challenges in urban areas of the developing world. These challenges include the provision and equitable distribution of sustainable public water supply facilities. This study therefore aimed at assessing the extent of spatial inequality in the distribution of water facilities provision among major segments in Lapai urban centre, Nigeria to aid policy formulation and framework in achieving sustainable water supply. This study utilizes the Gini coefficient composite statistical tool to examine the distribution inequality of three main sources of public water facilities in the study area, which includes; hand pump boreholes, motorised boreholes, and wells. The study area is divided into four quadrants (quadrants A, B, C, and D). It was found out that 17.31%, 21.15%, and 37.50% Gini coefficients were recorded for hand pump boreholes, motorised boreholes, and well facilities. This indicates that there is inequality in the distribution of public water supply facilities among the four quadrants in the study area. It was therefore recommended that both the public and private sectors should provide public water facilities equitably to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Szybki rozwój i ekspansja miast stanowią trudne wyzwania w obszarach miejskich rozwijającego się świata. Wyzwania te obejmują zapewnienie i sprawiedliwą dystrybucję publicznych urządzeń wodociągowych.

Opis:
The national total expenditure of a country is precipitated on several factors of which revenue generated could be one and very significant. This paper therefore examines the contribution of some selected sources of Nigerian government revenue to total national expenditure. Statistical and econometric techniques used for the data analysis are unit root test, cointegration test, combined estimators’ analysis, the error correction model (ECM) and the feasible generalized linear (FGLS) estimators. Results showed that the variables are non stationary but are stationary at first difference. The long-run relationship of total expenditure on oil revenue, non-oil revenue, federation account and federal retained revenue revealed that the variables are cointegrated and required the use of combined estimators. The effect of nonoil revenue and federal retained revenue is very significant. Investigations on the short-run modeling necessitated the use of FGLS estimators. The effect of ECM and federal retained revenue is very significant. Consequently, other sources of revenue apart from federal retained revenue need to be enhanced and tailored towards improving economic growth and development through national expenditure.

Opis:
Personalised medicine (PM) represents a paradigm shift away from the ‘one size fits all’ approach to the treatment and care of patients with a particular condition, to one which uses emergent technologies such as diagnostic tests, functional genomic technologies, and molecular pathway profiling to better manage patients’ health and employ target therapies. The current challenge for national and regional authorities is to facilitate the shift from a reactive healthcare system based on episodic and acute care models to a personalized health (PH) system that uses preventive and predictive measures, where at-risk individuals are stratified to intervene before the onset of symptoms or risk is predicted using cutting-edge technologies before symptoms appear. While PH is paving the way toward better and more efficient patient care, it still lacks the cooperation and coordination needed to organise the fragmented field, which is a severe drawback to its development and to the placement of effective financial investments. For this reason, it is crucial to direct major efforts towards coordinating and aligning relevant stakeholders across Europe and beyond, creating a participatory approach, building trust, enabling a multi-stakeholder process, and channeling investments towards PH. Thus, Regions4PerMed aims to coordinate regional policies and innovation programmes in PM and PH to accelerate the deployment of PH for patients.

Opis:
The overwhelming burden that bisphenol A (BPA) has caused humanity demands clarity as the global society agitates for a safer food packaging component. BPA is a structural component used in hardening of plastics and lining of various food and beverage containers to protect food from contamination and extend shelf life. The study review several literatures on BPA exposures, BPA toxicokinetics, BPA pharmacokinetics, epidemiology and ecological impacts of BPA. Our findings posits that even though BPA does not have a long span per se, its influence and accumulation in human body has a negative long term effect which could lead to several dangerous health implications such as cancer, obesity and fertility problems. These findings challenge the long-standing scientific and legal presumption of BPA's safety and recommends possible safety measures that can be taken in order to reduce exposure to BPA and few of such actions includes; public awareness about BPA and its presence in our daily consumption, negative effects of BPA to the environment and to the human body and finally, thorough investigation of the presence and threshold limit of BPA in plastics and canned foods.

Precipitation is a component of the hydrological cycle, knowing its spatial distribution is vital for the management of hydrographic basins, the territory and the development of fundamental activities for society. That is why the present study shows the spatial variability of rainfall in Cartagena de Indias city with a network of rain gauges, made up of nine pieces of equipment, separated from each other by 0.9-27 km. After a year of recording (2019), using historical series of data, it was found that the maximum rainfall occurs in the trimester between September and November, with interpolated maps made by the Ordinary Kriging (OK) method it was found that the maximum rainfall is focused on the north, centre and west of the territory, instead, the maximum intensities are presented in the centre and west, the minimums for both variables are presented to the east and south. The 70 and 90% of the rain events have a duration of less than 30 min and 1 h, respectively. Three-parameter exponential function was fitted to the paired correlation distances, and presented correlations lower than 0.8, 0.5 and 0.2 from distances of 1, 3 and 7 km, respectively, in 30 min rain integration. It was also found that with a pluviometric network conformed by at least six pieces of equipment and separated by a 5 km distance from each other in the urban area, a correlation of 0.5 and compliance with the WMO recommendations would be obtained.
