Opis:
For the first time in the world literature, the presented study describes oral-anal contact between two sympatric Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks, which are the vectors of many pathogens in Europe. Among the specimens collected in nature, an I. ricinus male was found with the hypostome and chelicerae inserted in the anal aperture of a D. reticulatus female. Given the biological and physiological traits of both species and microorganisms colonising these arthropods, it seems that the interspecific oral-anal contacts between ticks may be an unknown alternative route of transmission of pathogenic and symbiotic microorganisms present in ticks’ alimentary tract, faeces, body surface, and in the haemolymph and organs, taking place when the male’s mouthparts are inserted into the female’s body. The authors suggest that interspecific contacts between ticks in natural conditions can contribute to the spread of some microorganisms among different tick species and their hosts.

Introduction and aim. There are no available objective tools for assessing dysarthric disorders in the course of multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of the study is to analyse a case of mixed dysarthria in a 55-year-old female patient in the course of secondary progressive MS and to present the severity of the patient’s dysarthric disorder in contrast with the control group as evaluated by means of an IT tool based on respiratory and phonatory examination. Description of the case. A 55-year-old patient was admitted to the Clinic of Neurology with the Stroke Unit due to a worsening condition in the course of MS. She was examined with an objective tool for respiratory and phonatory disorders. Her results were, then, compared to those of 24 healthy individuals from the control group, matched in terms of sex and age. Following speech parameters were analysed: phonetics of utterances, number of produced syllables per breath during the execution of individual texts, sound quality, intonation, and the total performance time of each. Conclusion. The analysed case indicates that the developed objective IT tool is a promising diagnostic method that can facilitate diagnosis and can be used in clinical practice.

Opis:
Investigations into the abundance of adult D. reticulatus in relation to the effect of climatic conditions (temperature, humidity) on host-seeking behaviour were conducted during the autumn (September-October) and spring (May) activity peaks in 2008–2009 in eastern Poland (51°25’N). The study was conducted in the same habitat where similar examinations were performed in 1999–2000. A comparative analysis revealed that the abundance of D. reticulatus had almost doubled within 10 years. Analysis of data on the humidity and temperature conditions prevailing during tick collection, and on tick abundance in the respective study periods in 1999–2000 and 2008–2009, as well as absence of climatic changes over many years, indicate that the increase in the numbers of ticks may have been a result of a multitude of other factors, e.g. weather or environmental conditions favourable for ticks and their hosts. The substantial differences in D. reticulatus abundance observed during the autumn activity peak (an increase from 126 and 128.6 specimens per collection in 1999 and 2000, respectively, to 247.3 in 2008) demonstrate the considerable effect of the biotic and abiotic conditions prevailing during the development of young and adult stages on the abundance of this tick species. The activity of adult D. reticulatus ticks in the autumn was 2.7-fold higher in comparison to that observed during the spring collection; the difference was statistically significant (p<0.0001). Females dominated in both seasonal activity peaks. The ratio between females and males during the spring and autumn peaks was 3.31:1 and 1.05:1, respectively. The increase in the abundance of the D. reticulatus population implies a higher risk of transmission of tick-borne diseases in the study area, and the necessity to develop and implement effective prevention methods and tick control programmes.

Opis:
Objective. This study presents for the first time a case of Hyalomma excavatum hyperparasitism and an analysis of this phenomenon in terms of its potential role in the biology of ticks and epidemiology of tick-borne diseases. Materials and method. Two partially engorged H. excavatum females, one fully engorged female, and 5 males were collected from a naïve rabbit and placed together in a rearing chamber at a temperature of 25 °C and 75% humidity. Results. 3–4 days after tick detachment from the host’s skin, one partially engorged H. excavatum female was observed attached to the idiosoma of the fully engorged conspecific female. Conclusions. This study and observations of other authors confirm that partially engorged ixodid ticks can re-infest the host, and even co-feeding fully engorged ticks in order to collect the blood meal that is indispensable for important physiological processes. However, inefficient feeding of a partially engorged female on another conspecific female may reduce its reproductive performance and disturb the development of eggs and larvae. It seems that parasitism of a tick on another conspecific specimen, when at least one of them is infected by a microorganism, may be a yet poorly explored route of transmission of pathogens or symbionts between the ticks. Initiation of feeding by a hungry or partially engorged tick on a fully engorged specimen is an attempt to obtain food in the drastic conditions of the absence of a target host. Tick hyperparasitism with concurrent pathogen transmission can contribute to the genospecific diversity of pathogens in vectors and hosts.

Opis:
Introduction and objectives: Ixodes ricinus is a tick commonly found on human and animals and of great medical and veterinary importance. The aim of the study was to determine the parameters of different stages of feeding in Ixodes ricinus females. Methods: 229 Ixodes ricinus females were collected from 102 animals – roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) culled in southern and south-eastern Poland in 2002. Each female was weighed and the length and width of the scutum as well as the width of the idiosoma were measured. 20 tick females were collected from vegetation growing in the region and analysed in order to compare the changes in the parameters studied to those exhibited by unengorged specimens. Results: Three groups were identified on the basis of female body weight; group I consisted of 52 females in feeding phase I with body weight in the range of 0.0003–0.0043 g (mean 0.0019 g), group II comprised 150 females in feeding phase II with weight in the range of 0.0017–0.3075 g (mean 0.0263 g), and group III consisted of 27 females in feeding phase III with weight in the range of 0.0904–0.3122 g (mean 0.1913 g). Indices characterizing the various feeding phases, such as body index, scutal index, alloscutal index, growth index, engorgement index I and II, and the relative body mass index, were determined. The investigations demonstrated that the values of the morphometric traits in feeding phase I, II and III differe in I. ricinus females. Conclusions: The values of the morphometric features and indices can be helpful in identification of the parasitic stage of I. ricinus females removed from host skin, and assessment of the risk of infection of the host with various parasites injected with tick saliva at the respective feeding phases.

Opis:
Effect of the backfat thickness at point P2 during insemination on the selected parameters of colostrum and milk of the sows. The studies included 32 females F1 (PL x PLW), inseminated with the semen from Duroc boars. The females were assigned to two groups: L – “lean” sows: P2 ≤18 mm at mating (n=16 heads) and F – “fat” sows: P2 >18 mm (n=16 heads). The observations were carried on from the day of effective mating /insemination throughout the period of gestation and nutrition until weaning (35 day of lactation). Fatness of the sows (measurements of backfat thickness at points P2 and P4) and their muscling (height of M. longissimus dorsi at point P4M) at mating and in high pregnancy (104±1-2 day of gestation) were controlled. The samples of colostrum and milk were collected from all sows (64 samples in total). Basic chemical compositions, somatic cell count – SCC and active acidity – pH, were determined. Thickness of backfat at point P2 did not have any influence on chemical composition of colostrum and milk, SCC and pH; in spite of it. The control of the sows’ condition is justified as there was indicated a significant difference (P≤0.05) in the content of lactose (21. day) in favour of group F vs. L (0.56 pp). The mentioned result indicates the need of continuing the studies because lactose is a valuable, easily assimilated component of mother feed for the newborns.

Opis:
The Palearctic three-host species Dermacentor reticulatus contributes to the circulation of numerous pathogens in the environment. Reduction of its abundance may therefore decrease the risk of tick-borne diseases in a given area. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of various concentrations of three pyrethroids – deltamethrin (D), cypermethrin (C), and alpha-cypermethrin (AC) on the development of D. reticulatus eggs and larvae. 217 engorged D. reticulatus females were examined in the investigations. After the feeding period, they were sprayed with 0.015625%, 0.03125%, 0.0625%, and 0.125% solutions of D, C, and AC, and kept at a temperature of 25oC and 90% relative humidity throughout the preoviposition and oviposition periods. Eggs laid by females were kept in the same conditions until larval hatch. Based on the results obtained, parameters of the course of maturation and oviposition, as well as parameters of embryonic development, were determined. The investigations showed that the pyrethroids tested prolonged the egg maturation period, reduced the number and weight of eggs, and caused disturbances in embryogenesis in D. reticulatus. Upon treatment with as little as 0.015625% AC, larvae did not develop and all eggs died 1–2 days after oviposition. C led to a decreased percentage of normal larval hatch – 31.96%, 15.51% and 12.5%, respectively, after using three increasing concentrations (control 98.15%), and a high rate of egg and embryo mortality. The least detrimental effect on the D. reticulatus maturation and embryonic periods was exerted by deltamethrin (82.74%, 84.37% and 16.80% of normal larvae in treatment with the three concentrations). Morphological anomalies were observed in larvae during the experimental period. AC appeared to have the most toxic effect during the maturity and egg development periods, while C exhibited lower toxicity. Application of these pyrethroids in engorged D. reticulatus females exerts distant effects that lead to substantial reduction of tick offspring abundance.

Opis:
In the paper, the evolution of nutrition of the sows, as based upon the standards of feeding, in aspect of improving their productivity and optimizing their condition were presented. The mentioned traits decide on the longevity and high life performance of the females. The traditional Polish standards and contemporary national nutritional recommendations were referred to. The examples of recommendations, based on German, Dutch and the US standards were presented. It was stressed that in striving at optimization of pig nutrition, we should consider, i.a. the modern systems of feeds’ evaluation and the nutritional requirements, as specified in standards of feeding. The modern standards are based on a wide knowledge in the field of physiology and genetic value of animals; they consider also environmental factors which have an impact on the animals. In the manuscript, the attention was paid to the fact that the basic mechanisms of programming the embryo and foetus development in mothers, the growth and development of mammary gland, production of colostrum and milk and the postnatal growth and development of progeny was dependent on nutrition. The nutritional recommendations for pregnant and suckled sows during the half of the century were discussed, with the particular attention to their differentiation throughout the mentioned period of time. It was stressed that production and economic premises were the basis for the indicated changes. In the effect of the conducted breeding work, the pigs are characterized by a higher body weight and better gains of muscular tissue and smaller fat reserves. The mentioned traits are typical of the contemporary gilts and the sows utilized for reproduction what creates production problems. The long-time work was oriented to the improvement of the reproduction traits of the pigs; the increased fertility, as being accompanied by nutritional deficiencies and hormonal disturbances may result in disorder in prenatal myogenesis and in the increase and development of the progeny in the postnatal period. The diversified supplementation of the feed for the sows allows limiting the scale of the problem. It was confirmed by the results of many studies where different amino acids and feed additives were employed. There is also a need of diversifying the level and quality of nutrition in the successive stages of reproduction cycle and adapting them to growing but varying requirements of the sows as compared to the past period. Intensively managed sows of modern genotypes require a special care in respect of optimization of nutrition in the particular stages of reproduction cycle. It determines reaching and maintaining good condition and high and long-lasting production, with a low index of culling.
