The first part of the article presents the allegorical interpretation ofseveral passages connected with the sins of the members of the Churchaccording to the Commentary of St. Jerome to the prophet Zephaniah:a. The vain glory and false dignity of priests and bishops (Zeph 1:4); b. Theabandonment of Christ’s garments (Zeph 1:8); c. Disrespect for baptism andpenance (Zeph 1:10); d. Oppression due to false doctrines (Zeph 1:11, 2:8);e. Sins committed by the representatives of the Church (Zeph 2:9); f. FalseChristians inside the Church (Zeph 2:14); g. Oppressive superiors (Zeph 3:3);h. Church doctors disregarding the Holy Spirit and the goodness of God. Inthe second part, the author explores the passages allegorically interpreted inrelation to the care of Christ for his beloved Church: a. The light of the wordand wisdom (Zeph 1:12); b. Destruction of perverse structures (Zeph 1:13); c. An invitation to communion in love and peace (Zeph 2:1); d. The ”Rest”of those who know the Word of God (Zeph 2:9); e. The “Jacob’s ladder” episode from the book of Genesis inspired numerous symbolic interpretations in ancient Christianity. Most often we encounter moral symbolism, which basically proceeds in two directions. Following Tertullian, “descending angels” symbolize sinners, and “ascending” – righteous people. According to Augustine, “descending” mean those who take care of the needs of others, while “ascending” are those who direct their hearts to God. For Jerome, ascending and descending angels symbolize not so much people as the mercy of God who descends to the sinner, whereas for Ambrose and Zeno of Verona the ladder represents the Old and New Testament, and its rungs – the Christian virtues. An important literary motif in the story of the “Jacob’s ladder” is the stone under the Patriarch’s head, which in the Christian tradition assumes a Christological meaning.

The article analyzes selected literary motifs of Psalm 77, which were used by Origen to formulate more-than-literal interpretations. The methodology of research on the processes of creating allegorical and symbolic associations has been applied to the following literary motifs: the separation of the waters of the Red Sea, the cloud and the pillar of fire leading the Israelites through the wilderness, water from a rock, and manna from heaven.
W artykule przeanalizowano wybrane motywy literackie Psalmu 77 (78), które posłużyły Orygenesowi do sformułowania interpretacji ponaddosłownych. Metodologię badań nad procesami tworzenia skojarzeń alegoryczno-symbolicznych zastosowano w odniesieniu do następujących motywów literackich: rozdzielenie wód Morza Czerwonego, obłok i słup ognia prowadzący Izraelitów przez pustynię, woda ze skały oraz manna z nieba.

Throughout the centuries, the more-than-literal interpretation of the Bible was present in the tradition of the Church. Symbols made out of biblical literary motifs expressed deep theological and human concepts. They made visible what otherwise was invisible. Our article presents three symbols rooted in the biblical text that acquired new spiritual meanings in the ancient and medieval interpretation of the Scripture: wings, tree and bow.

Opis:
The ancient Christian tradition considered the allegorical interpretation of the Bible as an important mean of spiritual formation in the life of the Church. This approach to the Biblical text has been neglected in modern times due to the use of historical-critical methods in the Biblical exegesis. However, it seems that the intuitions of the Fathers of the Church may still be inspiring, especially for certain spiritual actualizations of the Scripture. In some contexts of the life of the Church, e.g. spiritual retreats, the symbolical and allegorical reading of the Bible can be still fruitful, especially in connection with new spiritualties emerging in modern times. Even more, the access to critical editions of patristic works and the semiotic approach to the Biblical text make possible new understandings that may enrich the living tradition of Biblical interpretation.

W artykule zostały przeanalizowane starożytne i średniowieczne interpretacje postaci wdowy w Ewangelii Łukasza w tradycji Kościoła zachodniego. Poczynając od Ambrożego (+397), przez Bedę Czcigodnego (+735), aż po kompilację Glossa Ordinaria (XII w.), postać wdowy przeważnie kojarzona była z Eklezją, czyli Kościołem. W toku rozważań zostały podjęte następujące problemy badawcze: W jaki sposób tekst biblijny sugeruje takie skojarzenie? Jakie potencjalne motywy symbolotwórcze tekstu biblijnego prowadzą do tego skojarzenia i jakie wynikają stąd dalsze implikacje? Jak wyglądał proceder interpretacyjny ówczesnych komentatorów, który prowadził do stworzenia takiej symboliki? I w końcu, na ile może być ona inspirująca dla współczesnego odbiorcy? Wdowa Anna, która z nadzieją tęskni, by ujrzeć Boże oblicze (Łk 2,36-38), wdowa z Sarepty Sydońskiej, której zagraża śmierć głodowa (Łk 4,25-26), wdowa z Nain, która cierpi z powodu śmierci syna (Łk 7,11-17), wdowa wytrwale błagająca sędziego, by wstawił się za nią (Łk 18,1-8) oraz wdowa wrzucająca dwa grosze do skarbony (Łk 21,1-4), obrazują Kościół wyglądający z nadzieją zmartwychwstania w czasach ostatecznych, otrzymujący duchowy pokarm Ciała Pańskiego, ufający w moc Chrystusa, który przywraca życie jej duchowo umarłym synom, wytrwale modlący się do Boga oraz na Nim opierający całą swoją egzystencję.
The article analyzes ancient and medieval interpretations of the figure of the widow in the Gospel of Luke in the tradition of the Western Church. From Ambrose (+397), through Bede the Venerable (+735), to the compilation Glossa Ordinaria (twelfth century), the figure of the widow was mostly associated with Ecclesia, or the Church. The following research problems were addressed in the course of the deliberation: How does the biblical text suggest such an association? What potential symbol-forming motifs of the biblical text lead to this association, and what are the further implications? What was the interpretative procedure of the commentators of that time, which led to the creation of such symbolism? And finally, to what extent can it be inspiring for the modern audience? The widow Anna, who longs with hope to see God's face (Lk 2:36-38), the widow of Zarephath of Sidon, who is threatened with starvation (Lk 4:25-26), the widow of Nain, who suffers from the death of her son (Lk 7:11-17), the widow persistently begging the judge to intercede for her (Lk 18:1-8) and the widow throwing two pennies into the treasury (Lk 21:1-4) portray the Church looking with hope for the resurrection in the last times, receiving the spiritual nourishment of the Body of the Lord, trusting in the power of Christ, who restores life to her spiritually dead sons, persistently praying to God and basing her entire existence on Him.

The article presents the new ecumenical polish translation of the Scripture and focuses on its original aspects. The author of the article translated the books of Qohelet and Song of Songs in the Ecumenical Bible. The main newness in the book of Qohelet was a translation of the motto of the book. The traditional “vanity of vanities” was interpreted according to the Hebrew etymology connected with wind and vapor, using at the same time an adjectival form. Literally it could be expressed in English: “evanescent, how evanescent – says Qohelet – everything is so evanescent”. Another newness is the interpretation of the Hebrew re’ut ruach as “similar to the wind” based on the interpretation of the word re’ut in connection with the verbal root resh-ayin-hei. Also we propose, on the base of some semantic and intertextual analyses, a new interpretation of the passage considered misogynic of Qoh 7,27-28: “Behold, I have discovered this, says Qohelet, comparing one women with another to find an explanation. I am not able to understand even the one whom I love with all my heart. I am able to understand one man among a thousand, but I am not able to understand any woman among all these”. In the translation of the Song of Songs, instead of the traditional marginal notes “bride” and “bridegroom” introducing the speeches of different characters, we choose simply “she” and “he”.
