Opis:
The present study deals with biomonitoring to know mollusc species as an indicator. In the present study, presence, absence and abundance of particular gastropod and bivalve species were identified in the different banks of river Ganga. The study was carried out at two experimental sites, Sodepur (Exp-1) and Khardah (Exp-2), West Bengal, India as the area exhibits a major sewage water outfall in the river compared with upstream control site, Kalyani (Cont-1) and downstream control site, Batanagar (Cont-1). The present biomonitoring shows qualitatively and quantitatively that in experimental no mollusc species were observed near the wastewater discharge area into the bank of river Ganga at Khardah while both sites of the sewage discharge area into the bank of river Ganga at Sodepur particular gastropod Bellamya sp. were observed when compared to control area. The highest variety and total nos of gastropods and bivalves (280 nos) were recorded in the upstream at Kalyani and lowest variety and total nos of only gastropods (150 nos) were recorded in the downstream at Batanagar. The present biomonitoring work was a preliminary observation to know sensitive and tolerant or accumulator mollusc species in the bank of river Ganga from a stretch of Kalyani (upstream) to Batanagar (downstream) in between urban wastewater discharge area (Sodepur and Khardah). Further researches must be relevant in relation to biomarker assessment with the physico-chemical factors and stress tolerant detoxification mechanism of particular mollusc species.

Opis:
Behavioural activities in relation to toxicological aspects involve behavioural changes of aquatic organisms under the exposure of a contaminant. The present study aims to know behavioural activities of midge larvae Chironomus sp. at the in-situ acute exposure of different chemicals containing wastewater viz. lead-acid battery industrial effluent, mixed industrial effluent and fresh tap water (chlorinated) as drinking water in comparison to control (dechlorinated) water sample (aged tap water). The Chironomus larvae were kept in three different experimental chambers (perforated wall test vessels) with the exposure of different water samples. These samples were made with no dilution, 50 % dilution, 2.5 % dilution and control water sample. The behavioral activities for larvae of Chironomus sp. were measured at 0h, 2h, 24h and 48 h in in-situ condition. The behavioral activities viz. crawling, looping, ventilation, paralyses and subsequently death of the larvae were recorded in the field condition. A significant differences (P < 0.05, P < 0.01 and P< 0.001) were observed with increasing time of exposure while in few cases the data were increased without significance level. It was recorded that after exhibiting behavioural activities viz. crawling, looping, ventilation and paralyses finally all species were died 100 % of the population in lead acid battery effluent following both 24h and 48hr exposure. In addition, death of larvae were 70 % in mixed industrial effluent and 50 % in fresh tap water (chlorinated) after 48h exposure as compared to control sample water. In conclusion, the present results indicate that the larvae of Chironomous sp. are suitable indicators in the evaluation of the effluent quality in the studied stream, potential to know by behavioural toxicological study for heavy metals and organic pollution. Although it is a preliminary observation by assessing behavioural toxicology but future study in relation to biochemical and genetic damage of Chironomous larvae with the exposure of toxic water samples will provide bigger view.

Opis:
The trees support many bird and animal species while the survival of urban-dwelling species e.g. bird species dominate over others. This particular Nature park in Kolkata is the habitat of birds and fish species suggesting a better environment for food chain maintenance. The Asian open bill stork, Anastomus oscitans among other bird species is a common and provides ecosystem health indicator. The present study aims to understand the occurrence and population nos. of Asian open bill stork on particular tree species surrounding wetlands at Nature Park, Kolkata, India. Our results clearly indicate that a total population of this bird species having 671 nos. on the particular trees but not in all other available trees in the study area. In conclusion, present research emphasizes a novel occurrence and higher population of the A. oscitans being observed on the basis of the presence of particular tree species, though no attempt has been made on physico-chemical properties of present water and microclimate within the park. Therefore, further research planning should be oriented considering the physico-chemical impacts as well as local microenvironment along with human interaction as visitors in such a way so that these barriers cannot affect nesting and breeding of those species as eco-indicator. Also further relevant research is needed to emphasize on the conservation of these specific tree species to increase population of Asian open bill stork, A. oscitans in Nature park.

Purpose: In the present study, we aimed to identify the effect of three increasing doses of most widely preservative, formaldehyde (FA) on the urinary system using human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293) in vitro. Materials and methods: The HEK-293 cells were grown in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle medium (DMEM, Gibco, USA) supplemented with 10% of fetal bovine serum, 100 IU/ml penicillin and 100 μg/ml of streptomycin (Gibco, USA) using 25cm2 flasks (Nunc, Denmark), in a CO2 incubator (Heal Force) at 37°C are treated with 19 % formaldehyde in DMEM supplemented with 10% of fetal bovine serum to yield final concentrations of 0.05 μl/ml, 0.1 μl/ml, 0.5 μl/ml and 1.0 μl/mlof 19% FA. Results: The result showed that statistically significant dose dependent decrease in cell viability of HEK-293 cells with exposure to increasing concentration of FA (0.05 μl/ml, 0.1 μl/ml, 0.5 μl/ml and 1.0 μl/ml) on MTT assay. Extremely huge dose dependent DNA damage with a dose dependent up regulation of mRNA expression of pro-apoptotic iNOS and TNF- gene was observed when HEK-293 cells are treated with the increasing concentration of FA. In addition, the protein expression levels of Bcl-2 and Bax revealed that increasing concentration of FA on HEK-293 cells down regulated the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and up regulated pro-apoptotic Bax gene. Conclusions: Our result indicates that, high dose of FA is more dangerous than the low dose on HEK-293 cells with cellular damage.

Opis:
During the past two decades, Arsenic (As) contamination via groundwater has become a serious issue worldwide and is now a major concern in the Indo-Bangladesh Gangetic delta. Arsenic enters human body through contaminated groundwater consumed as drinking water. Food safety in this region is also facing severe consequences as bio-accumulation of Arsenic is occurring in food crops irrigated with As-contaminated water. Chronic exposure to Arsenic can cause not only cancerous and non-cancer health effects. Reports suggest that about 20 % population in West Bengal is highly affected. Various techniques are being introduced to provide arsenic-free drinking water at an affordable cost. But a rigorous change in habit and mind set for procuring safe drinking water in those surviving in As-contaminated zones is the most essential step towards curbing the fatal consequences of As exposure. Harvesting rain water and utilization of proper purification techniques can be considered a possible alternative of safe drinking water.

This paper presents a mathematical model of a power controller for a high-frequency induction heating system based on a modified half-bridge series resonant inverter. The output real power is precise over the heating coil, and this real power is processed as a feedback signal that contends a closed-loop topology with a proportional-integral-derivative controller. This technique enables both control of the closed-loop power and determination of the stability of the high-frequency inverter. Unlike the topologies of existing power controllers, the proposed topology enables direct control of the real power of the high-frequency inverter.

Opis:
Purpose: To investigate the involvement of oxidative stress in Cadmium (Cd) induced alteration in the functional status of the liver. And to assess the efficacy of folic acid and vitamin B12 in preventing Cd-induced damage in the same. Materials and methods: The experiment was carried out for four weeks. For the experiment, 25 healthy male adult Wistar albino rats were randomly selected and were divided into five equal groups and treated as control, treated with Cd, supplemented with vitamin B12 and folic acid and in the combination of these two. After 28 days the liver function enzymes and oxidative stress parameters were measured. Results: Cd is the silent killer of the hepatic system through the induction of oxidative stress in male rats. From this investigation, it is evident that the folic acid+vitamin B12 possess significant hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity against Cd-induced hepatotoxicity in the rat model. In addition, results revealed that the folic acid alone and or in combination with vitamin B12 blunted the hepatotoxic effect significantly. Conclusions: Based on results obtained, it can be concluded that folic acid and vitamin B12 offer a protective effect in Cd-induced oxidative stress associated with hepatocellular injury. Folic acid and vitamin B12 can be considered as a potent natural antioxidant which has the capacity to provide protection against Cd-induced oxidative stress in the liver in rats. However, to elucidate the exact mechanism of this modulatory effect and to examine its potential therapeutic effects further studies are essential.

Opis:
Background: This study was based on gender differences in male and female trained tennis players. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to determine the extent that physical training could minimize the gender differences in lung capacities in trained tennis players aged 14–17 years. Material and methods: The participants were ten male and seven female lawn tennis players, with a mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of 15.5 ± 1.27 and 14.43 ± 1.13 years, respectively. Physical characteristics and lung volumes were measured on the same day for each participant. Data were presented as mean ± SD, and Student’s t-test to compare the measured variables was performed. Results: Differences between genders were insignificant in terms of age (years), weight (kg), body fat (%), lean body mass (kg) and chest circumference (cm). However, height (cm), and W/H ratio were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in male tennis players in comparison to female players. Insignificant differences were found for TV (L), SVC (L), FVC (L), FEV1 (L), FEV1/FVC (%), FEF25-75% (L/s), PEF (L/s) and MVV (L/min). The only significant difference (p < 0.05) in lung function measures between male and female trained tennis players was for PIF (L/s). Conclusions: Male tennis players were taller than female tennis players of same age range, which might be advantageous for males while playing. Insignificant differences between male and female players in the various lung variables measured indicated that the influence of height and gender differences could be minimized by proper training during puberty. A significantly higher PIF in male players indicated stronger and more powerful inspiratory muscle activity compared with female tennis players.

Opis:
Numerous soft-sediment deformation structures occur within the Proterozoic Bhander Limestone of an intracratonic sag basin in a 750 m long section along the Thomas River, near Maihar, central India. Part of these deformation structures have most probably a non-seismic origin, but other structures are interpreted as resulting from earthquake-induced shocks. These seismic structures are concentrated in a 60 cm thick interval, which is interpreted as three stacked seismites. These three seismites are traceable over the entire length of the section. They divide the sedimentary succession in a lower part (including the seismites) deposited in a hypersaline lagoon, and an upper open-marine (shelf) part. Most of the soft-sediment deformations outside the seismite interval occur in a lagoonal intraclastic and muddy facies association. The SSDS within the seismite interval show a lateral continuity. They record simultaneous fluidisation and liquefaction. The bases of each of the three composing seismite bands are defined by small-scale shear folds, probably recording an earthquake and aftershocks. The presence of the three seismite bands at the boundary between the lagoonal and the overlying open-marine oolitic facies association suggests that the seismic event also triggered basin subsidence.

A group of polycyclic and aliphatic azido-esters (as energetic plasticizers) have been synthesized by simple synthetic routes and their molecular structures were confirmed by spectroscopic techniques. In addition, their thermal and rheological properties have been determined utilizing DSC, TGA, viscosity, and contact angle. Computational studies of these plasticizers have been performed by means of DFT (B3LYP/6-31G*) to estimate possible stable structures, energies, heat of formation, bond dissociation energies, IR and NMR spectra etc. Their compatibility with glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) binder was studied to explore their applicability in propellants. All of these molecules are novel and have been synthesized with the possibility of scale up.

Opis:
The main common idea of two conference papers delivered at OMEE-2017 was to demonstrate an importance of the speciation level knowledge in modern adsorption materials science. In order to prove this, two groups of adsorptive materials were used: three samples of Mg-Al-CO₃ layered double hydroxides produced by different synthesis methods and ten samples of Fe-Ce oxide-based composites with various ratios of Fe-to-Ce. In both cases of studies, it was not possible to find direct correlation between adsorptive performances of the materials and their structural properties obtained by conventional characterisation techniques. However, anion adsorptive removals of each group of inorganic composites correlated with their structural properties studied on the level of speciation. It was shown that strong anion removal potential of Mg-Al-CO₃ layered double hydroxides was associated with richness in speciation of chemical elements (Mg, Al) and interlayer anions (CO₃²¯) as well as with generous hydration. Adsorptive performances of inorganic anion exchangers based on Fe-Ce hydrous oxides were explained by simulation extended X-ray absorption fine structures simulation. The best anion removers were found to be those Fe/Ce oxide-based composites whose Fe outer shells were formed from backscattering oscillations from both O and Fe atoms.
