Opis:
A recent development in the material studies provides beneficial application of lightweight alloys such as aluminium, magnesium as well as composites and metal matrices. The alloys are experimentally improved by increasing hardness in the ballistics testing using projectiles, makes them viable for the areas such as aerospace, military, defence, automobiles and so on. So the study is made on different approaches. First, by comparing different types of non-ferrous alloys and projectiles regarding sizes, structures. Second, the materials with heat treatment are also studied for investigating the hardness property by overcoming successful penetration on non-ferrous alloys. Third, material to be improvised by use of numerical studies such as 3D models, empirical models and software such as ANSYS, ABAQUS and AUTODYN, etc. Finally, the aim of this paper is to review the recent progress ballistic studies of lightweight materials and to provide a best choice of material for further on-going research.

Opis:
This research work address the fabrication of copper (Cu) matrix composites, reinforced with fly ash (FA) particulates with 3, 6, 9 and 12 wt.% using the powder metallurgy route. The microstructural, physical, electrical, thermal, mechanical and tribological properties of thus fabricated Cu-FA composites have been studied. Optical microstructural characterization of the composites exposed persuasively uniform distribution of FA reinforcement with minimum porosity. The mixed powder SEM images revealed the homogeneous dispersion of fly ash particulates in the copper matrix. The hardness values showed improvement with increase in the weight percentage of FA in the Cu matrix. Electrical conductivity was measured using the four-point probe method at room temperature. Thermal conductivity was measured with a thermal diffusivity analyzer at room temperature. The fly ash addition leads to weakening the conductivity of Cu-FA composites. The tribological properties of Cu-FA composite specimens were investigated using a Pin-on-disc tribo testing machine against an EN81 steel contour disc. The specific wear rate of the composites tended first to decrease, which was attributed mainly to the formation of a mechanically mixed layer on the worn surface. Then it would increase as the FA content increased because of reduction in ductility and brittle oxide cracks associated with adding more FA particulates. It seems that composites with FA percentages below 9wt.% have optimum properties of microstructure, hardness and wear resistance, which is suitable for applications such as electrical sliding contacts, electrical discharge machining and spot welding electrodes.

Opis:
In recent years, the increased interest in the design and fabrication of lightweight polymer composites with various combinations and stoichiometry is due to their enhancement of electrical, mechanical, thermal, and biological properties compared to the properties of conventional materials. With that view, the present study deals with the effects of low density polyethylene composites (LDPE) reinforced with epoxy resin, glass fiber, carbon fiber, and Kevlar towards the mechanical, thermal, and water absorption properties. The mechanical studies showed that the LDPE composite reinforced carbon fiber has the best tensile properties compared to other composites and this can be mostly due to the proper bonding and associated interaction between the polymeric matrix and the bidirectional layer of the fibers. Also, the carbon fiber reinforced composite has superior properties of impart energy compared to the other composites and the non-reinforced ones and this is attributed to the crystalline nature of carbon fiber. Further studies of the thermal properties indicated that the retention of thermal stability for all the fiber-reinforced polymer composites, while the water absorption revealed a considerable increase in the weight of Kevlar fiber-reinforced composite. From the overall analysis, the enhanced properties of LDPE matrix reinforced fibers are linked to the morphological changes that occurred and are directly affected by the nature of the fiber.
Zwiększone w ostatnich latach zainteresowanie projektowaniem i wytwarzaniem lekkich kompozytów polimerowych wynika z ich lepszych właściwości elektrycznych, mechanicznych, termicznych i biologicznych w porównaniu z cechami materiałów konwencjonalnych. Zbadano wpływ rodzaju wzmocnienia (włókno szklane, włókno węglowe i włókno Kevlar) na właściwości mechaniczne, termiczne i absorpcję wody laminatowych kompozytów polietylenu małej gęstości (LDPE) z żywicą epoksydową.
