Energy is an abstract notion that helps to understand the nature and contributes to the creation of the civilization. The energy notion has a huge meaning not only due to practical reason – it is essential for economy and philosophy too. It turns out that in Hellenic philosophy, and especially in its fundamental part, i.e., metaphysics, there is no place for the concepts and methods of reasoning developed by physics and chemistry. Philosophy assumes that most of the physical and chemical concepts are not known in nature in spe these are employed by science only as a kind of mental keys (qualitative occultea) for the description and understanding of the universe. The concept of energy is only one example of a notion accepted both by the philosophers (in its metaphysical sense) and physicians (in its descriptive role).

Our paper demonstrates the ability of Favre-averaged Navier–Stokes (FANS) turbulence models to predict the laminar-turbulent transition and shows the influence of the models on the wall temperature distribution. The investigations were based on conjugate heat transfer analyses of a convectively cooled C3X turbine vane, which were performed using commercial flow simulation software. We compared several eddy-viscosity models: shear stress transport (SST), γ-Reθ SSTtransition, v2-f, k-ε, realizable, k-kl-ω transition, and second-order closure ε-based Reynolds stress model (RSM) with a linear pressure-strain model. The turbulence length scale (TLS) was not measured during the experiment, so its influence on the location of the transition onset and wall temperature distribution is presented. We also examined the influence of the roughness of the airfoil wall on the location of turbulence initialization and the wall temperature distribution.

In the paper a brief review of processes for energy conversion developed recently within the framework of clean gas te chnologies is presented, in cluding projects for future repowering of Pomerania. The main aim of this work is to show the diferent thermodynamcs cycles which improve efficiency and/or decrease emissions such as: Cheng cycle, Szewalski cycle, LOTHECO cycle, hybrid pSOFC/GT cycle, inverse Brayton cycle, low-emission cycle and zero-emission cycle. For that purpose,cycles and results of analysis are frst studied and, secondly, new concept is presented. The role of coupled analysis 0D and 3D in cycle's devices is also discussed.

Sequential combustion was first applied to gas turbines more than 40 years ago, and almost half of these early machines are still operating. This form of oxidation leads to the flame-less combustion at a second chamber. In GT26, the second stage combustor has 24 SEV burners which are similar in action to the well known ABB EV burner. In this paper, a 3D numerical simulation of the first EV combustor and the second SEV-combustor are performed for normal operating conditions (exhaust mass flow 542 kg/s, exhaust temperature 610 C). Physical modelling of the flame-less oxidation is based on an original implementation of the Gri-Mech mechanism (325 chemical reactions) into the Fluent 5.4. Precise estimation of NOx emission and other pollutants has been done.

The present work concerns the description of phenomena taking place within interfacial regions during a flow of water, which is accompanied by heterogeneous flashing. The main aim of the work is to present a unified approach to first order phase transitions with the inclusion of capillary effects and to built on this basis a mathematical model describing nonequilibrium two-phase flows, in which the properties of the mixture include capillary components. The analysis of the problem was started with a discussion of physical aspects of flashing, which are the contents of Chapter 2. On the basis of the experimental data analysis a physical model of the phenomenon was formulated. In Chapter 3 a gradient description of first order heterogeneous phase transitions was given. The analysis was begun with a discussion of the properties and structure of interfacial areas. On the basis of the analysis constitutive equations for reversible stress tensor and free energy of a two-phase system treated as a homogeneous medium were formulated. The constitutive equations include capillary components modelled by means of the dryness fraction gradients and resulting from the nonuniformity of the system caused by the existence of two phases and interfacial surfaces. On the basis of the proposed theory a homogeneous model of two-phase flow with capillary effects was derived, which is a subject of Chapter 4. Taking into consideration the assumptions of the homogeneous model, one-dimensional balance equations for mass, momentum and energy of the mixture and mass of vapour were derived. A constitutive equation for the source term appearing in the last equation was obtained on the basis of the theory of internal parameters with the usage of the proposed form of free energy including a gradient term known from the second gradient theory. The remaining constitutive equations for the density of the two-phase system, wall shearing stresses and capillary pressure were also given. The proposed mathematical model was investigated from the point of view of wave properties, which were discussed in Chapter 5. The analysis of small disturbations was conducted, as a result of which a dispersion equation was obtained giving a relation between the velocity of disturbations, attenuation coefficient and frequency. This dispersive model was then applied for the prediction of critical mass flux in a channel flow using PIF method. On the basis of the comparison of the model predictions with experimental measurements a reasonably good agreement was found. In Chapter 6 the results of numerical calculations of flashing flow in channel were presented. Since the proposed mathematical model contains several phenomenological coefficients, a parametric analysis was performed in order to determine their value and the influence on solutions. For the sake of the analysis the classical benchmark experiment known as the Moby Dick was used. After fitting the solution of the model into the experimental measurements new calculations for other runs and other experiments were carried out. As a result of the analysis a good agreement of the model with reality was found, as well as its usefulness for the calculations of pressure and void fraction distributions in channels and for the determination of mass flow rate of two-phase systems. It constitutes a confirmation of the correctness of the proposed model as well as the theory on the basis of which it was built.

The study investigates the control of structural response using collocated piezoelectric elements mounted on both sides of beam. A capacitive shunt is introduced into the circuitry to provide passive control of the beam's configuration. The energy method is used to develop the structure's governing equations. In order to select the appropriate electrostatic relations for the material, i.e. conductor or insulator material, the free charge rearrangement time is used. The effects of the capacitive shunt are introduced into the electrostatic relations using additive decomposition of capacitance. As an application of the model, a piezo-elastic beam restrictor using a capacitive shunt is investigated. Numerical results show that the capacitive shunt can effect passive control of the configuration of the beam.

The paper deals with the proposition of a two-equation turbulent heat flux closure without any damping function. The model has been based on Durbin's V2F dynamic turbulence closure and the Deng-Wu-Xi thermal turbulence model. Both models have been implemented into the FLUENT code by a User Defined Function. Results of numerical computation have been compared with experimental data for developing a thermal field in a pipe by Nagano and DNS heat transfer prediction for a two-dimensional channel flow by Kasagi.

The article presents the development trends in the electricity generation market. Attention is paid to the strongly developing renewable energy sources (RES). For example, results developed for the power sector in Germany are quoted. Besides undoubted gains from such power sector development, also pointed out are some risks for conventional power generation, due to the nature of operation of these two generation modes. Based on the results of an analysis of the body of a high-power steam turbine’s HP part, a way of creating cooperation and mutual complementarity of these two types of generation sources is presented. To determine the conditions for this cooperation, the results of numerical simulation with elastic-plastic adaptations of the material were used. This branch of mechanical engineering, with numerous applications in other industries, has not found any deeper application in the energy sector, even though the Polish school of elasticity had the leading status in the world and is still recognized today. Appropriate application of the shakedown phenomenon enables faster starts, and hence the mutual coexistence of large steam units with developing renewable energy farms, whose outputs are strongly dependent on weather conditions.
W artykule zaprezentowano trendy rozwojowe rynku wytwarzania energii elektrycznej. Zwrócono przy tym uwagę na silnie rozwijającą się energetykę odnawialną (OZE). Dla przykładu przytoczono wyniki opracowane dla energetyki niemieckiej. Oprócz niewątpliwych zysków z takiego rozwoju energetyki wskazano również na pewne zagrożenia dla energetyki konwencjonalnej, wynikające ze specyfiki pracy tych dwóch gałęzi wytwarzania. Na podstawie wyników analizy korpusu części WP turbiny parowej dużej mocy zaprezentowano sposób kreowania współpracy i wzajemnego uzupełniania tych dwóch źródeł wytwarzania. Dla określenia warunków, jakim winna podlegać ta współpraca, posłużono się wynikami symulacji numerycznej wykorzystującej adaptacje sprężysto- plastyczne materiału. Ten dział mechaniki, mający swobodne zastosowanie w innych działach przemysłu, w energetyce nie znalazł głębszych aplikacji, pomimo że polska szkoła plastyczności miała status wiodącej w świecie i jest rozpoznawalna do dziś. Poprawne zastosowanie zjawiska shakedownu umożliwiłoby szybsze starty, a tym samym wzajemną koegzystencję dużych bloków parowych z rozwijającymi się farmami OZE, których moce wytwórcze silnie zależą od warunków pogodowych.

In this paper the comparison of material eort models: the classic Huber-Mises-Hencky approach and the Burzynski condition was presented. Burzynski yield condition is pressure sensitive and naturally takes into account the strength dierential eect, which has been observed in nickel-base super alloys such as Inconel 718. Investigation was performed during thermal-uidstructure interaction analysis of a power turbine guide vane of turbine helicopter engine PZL- 10W. Firstly, computational uid dynamics conjugate heat transfer analysis was carried out, then stress analysis was performed with boundary conditions obtained via computational uid dynamics analysis. During stress analysis, two mentioned above equivalent stress denitions were applied and dierence in material eort modelling by them was shown.

The present work is concerned with investigation into coupled phenomena occurring in the supersonic section of the de Laval nozzle, characterized by the presence of shock the flow of condensing steam. The numerical simulations results were compared with the experiment carried out by Dykas et al. in 2013 on the half arc nozzles. The present work includes simulations results of oscillation frequency of the shock wave and conditions for the enhancement evaporation of condensate within the asymmetrical shock wave. Novelty of our approach lies on modeling both the moment of initiation of a phase transition, as well as the moment of its reverse progress – called here revaporization of the condensate phase.

In this paper, the analysis of sudden water phase change during high-temperature metal body dipping is presented. According to that purpose, the computational fluid dynamic analysis has been carried out. The nonstationarity and behavior of sudden water phase change has been examined. The calculation model consists of the solid domain (vessel and high-temperature metal) and fluid domain (liquid filling vessel). The metal body insertion to the fluid domain was obtained by the use of dynamic mesh. Special case of the dipping velocity, the metal body of temperature 723 K and fluid temperature 288 K. was examined. Moving on to calculations, the model containing basic conservation equation, expanded of turbulence and liquid evaporation equations has been used.

In this paper, authors undertook a problem of accuracy and exactness verification of some assumptions and calculation methods that are important in the 0D modeling. The computational flow mechanics (CFM) tools and basic calculations of gas turbine cycle with heat regeneration according to Szewalski’s idea have been done. Results and conclusions for this specific problem have been presented. Gas turbine cycle with heat regeneration according to Szewalski’s idea includes regeneration as same as it is now commonly employed in steam turbine cycles. Mentioned regeneration is enabled by adding to the simple cycle devices configuration of two regenerative heat exchangers and auxiliary compressor. That modification allows to obtain working medium circulation in closed cycle inside a basic cycle. Efficiency gain is dependent on extraction pressure and extraction mass flow rate.

This paper is a proposition of implementation an amendment to the existing classic definition of degradation described the by Kachanov-Robotnov model. The proposed model allows to determine the rate of degradation the material structure in an independent verified corrosive environment and determining the redistribution of three-dimensional stress fields taking into account the progressive degradation. According to that purpose, the computational solid dynamics (CSD) numerical simulation of corrosion degradation performed with the mathematical model which was calibrated on the basis of an experiment has been performed by Mrowiec and Werber.

The present paper focuses on the prediction of the spontaneous condensation phenomena in the wet steam flow depending on the inlet temperature. The basic tests including comparison with experimental data have been performed using the planar symmetrical nozzle with the de Laval geometry (IMP PAN nozzle). It was assumed in calculations that steam is pure and does not contain heterogeneous sources of condensation. Numerical analysis was performed for boundary conditions which correspond to the flow regime without the shock wave. The present work includes simulations results of the onset of condensation and shows whether initiation of phase transition is located in the region between a spinodal and a binodal. Numerical results along the nozzle axis are presented on thermodynamic diagrams for all considered flow conditions.
