Opis:: The aim of this article is to present selected methodological threads of the discussion on the status of historical sources which took place in Polish post‑war historiography. In the article, I present the concepts of the historical source formulated in 1957–1989, mainly by Gerard Labuda and Jerzy Topolski. Further in the text, I will present the discussion about Topolski’s concepts and characterize the peculiarities of contemporary history as regards historical sources. In the light of the presented classification of sources, I will reflect on the status of the documents created by the apparatus of repression of the Polish People’s Republic.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to compare the effectiveness of two political systems: liberal democracy and illiberal democracy in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. The analysis has been carried out on the basis of the theoretical assumptions and conceptualization of non-Marxian historical materialism. In the first part of my article, I present the concept of ‘regulative credit” which has been introduced in that theory. In standard socio-political conditions, the growth of power regulations is usually contested by citizens. However, in a situation of danger, when social order is undermined, citizens support the authorities’ extraordinary regulations. This social support, called regulative credit, lasts as long as the danger persists. In chapter two, I characterize shortly liberal and illiberal democracies. In liberal democracy, there is a balance between different branches of power, and citizens share a socio-political consciousness of the individualistic type. In illiberal democracy, the executive branch of power – although it has been democratically chosen – has an advantage over the two other kinds of power, and citizens share a socio-political consciousness of the collectivist type. Those differences result in diverse reactions of the authorities to a situation of threat. The political authorities of an illiberal democracy react faster in comparison with the political authorities in liberal democracies that react slower. Also, the attitude of citizens toward the introduced restrictions varied. Societies of illiberal democracies are more self-disciplined and more willing to accept restrictions from above. Whereas societies of liberal democracies are more individualistic and less willing to accept limitations. In the fourth part of my paper, I analyze briefly the influence of the pandemic on globalization processes and on the relations between the EU and the nation states in Europe. In the summary (chapter five), I predict that the mass use of modern technologies to control social life and strengthening of the sovereignty of nation states will be the two most important effects of the pandemic.

The purpose of the text is to review the book Secret Agents and the Memory of Everyday Collaboration in Communist Eastern Europe, edited by Péter Apor, Sándor Horváth, and James Mark. The first part presents the various approaches to transitional justice, the second – the political circumstances of the establishment of institutions of memory in Eastern Europe, while the last one analyses the different approaches to dealing with the communist past and selected case studies.

Opis:: The paper aims to trace development of socio-political thought of “Solidarność” in years 1980-1989 in the light of a model of doctrinal evolution. In the second chapter theoretical assumptions regarding the nature of real socialism, structure of “Solidarność” movement and doctrinal development are presented. In the third chap¬ter the intellectual development of “Solidarność” thought is outline. It is supposed that in years 1980-1989 “Solidarność” was revolutionary (1980-1981) conspirational (1981-1986) and reformist social movement (1986-1989) what influenced its doctrinal development and diversification (emerging of radical and compromise wings). In the fourth chapter, the sociopolitical and socio-economic factors and conditions are identified which influenced the doctrinal development of “Solidarność” after 1989 – namely acceptance of neo-liberal model of transformation and resignation from workers’ self-governance.

Opis:: Artykuł jest krytycznym komentarzem do książki Aviezera Tuckera The Legacies of Totalitarianism: A Theoretical Framework, która przedstawia koncepcję ewolucji totalitarnego komunizmu i jego transformacji oraz wynikającą stąd analizę problemów posttotalitarnych społeczeństw Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Zdaniem autora tekstu, choć omawiana książka jest nader rzadką próbą syntetycznego wyjaśnienia zarówno genezy systemu realnego socjalizmu, jak i jego transformacji, to Tucker przyjmuje zbyt wąskie pojmowanie klasy i interesu klasowego, co prowadzi do idealistycznej interpretacji czystek stalinowskich i wyłącznie instytucjonalistycznego pojmowania transformacji. Takie spojrzenie na transformację ustrojową nie pozwala osadzić jej ekonomicznych wymiarów w szerszej społecznej perspektywie.
The paper is a critical commentary of The Legacies of Totalitarianism: A Theoretical Framework authored by Aviezer Tucker. This book presents the evolution of totalitarian communism, its transformation and analysis of problems surfacing in East-Central European societies. Although the reviewed book is a very rare attempt at a synthetic view on the genesis and transformation of communism, its author accepts a very narrow understanding of class and class interest which leads to an idealistic interpretation of Stalinist purges and the institutionalistic understanding of transformation which does not allow to place economical dimensions of post-communist transformation in a wider social perspective.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to outline the theory of a historical process developed within the framework of the Poznań School of Methodology, mainly by Leszek Nowak and a team of his co-workers. In the first part of the paper, the meta-philosophical and meta-theoretical assumptions of Poznań school are reconstructed and juxtaposed with the relevant assumptions of Western analytical Marxism. In the central part of the paper, the main ideas of adaptive reconstruction of historical materialism and non-Marxian historical materialism are presented. In its final part, some problems of reception of Leszek Nowak’s theory of historical process in Polish People’s Republic and the Third Republic are discussed.
Celem artykułu jest interpretacja teorii procesu historycznego rozwijanej w poznańskiej szkole metodologicznej przez Leszka Nowaka i zespól jego współpracowników. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiana metafilozoficzne i metateoretyczne założenia poznańskiej szkoły metodologicznej, które zestawiane są z założeniami zachodniego marksizmu analitycznego. W drugiej, zasadniczej części artykułu przedstawione są główne idee adaptacyjnej interpretacji materializmu historycznego i nie-Marksowskiego materializmu historycznego, zaś w trzeciej - problemy recepcji teorii procesu historycznego rozwijanej przez Leszka Nowaka w PRL i III RP.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to explicate the basic types of comparative methods used in Theda Skocpol’s States and Social Revolution within the conceptual framework of the Idealizational Theory of Science, and to determine the usefulness and place of the comparative methods in the structure of the idealizational theory. In the introduction, I outline a characterization of comparative-historical sociology. Some classifications of comparative analysis are presented in section 1. An analysis of comparative methods used in Skocpol’s theory of revolutions and what methodological discussion it stimulated is outlined in section 2. Section 3 presents the key tenets of the idealizational theory of science and in section 4 the basic types of comparative analysis (parallel, contrast oriented, and macro-causal) are explicated within the conceptual framework of this theory, thus allowing to locate these methods in the idealizational approach to science. In the final section, I consider the status of the theory of revolution developed in historical-comparative sociology in light of the vision of the history of scientific knowledge provided by the idealizational approach to science.
