    The aim of this article is to present the selected findings of the research carried out over the last decade on the situation of foreign pupils undergoing their education in Polish schools. The thesis being verified is that due to the lack of intercultural competencies of teachers, the educational institutions are not able to deal with the rising problems. Final conclusions point the necessity of changes in teacher training programs.

    Opis:
    Globalization processes stimulate the emerging of new cultural borderlands including, among many others, cyberspace and global cites. They create complex socio-cultural spaces of participation which can be described in the categories of diversity, instability, hybridity and creolization as well as multiple forms, ways, contents and institutions of socialization. The aforementioned changes impact the perception of the “place” category, the contemporary meaning, includes not only the physical space but also its history and cultural traditions. They also create new challenges and conditions for the processes of identity forming. Identification with the culturally diverse milieu can support development of the culture borderland identity. In certain conditions there can also be created a culturally uprooted protean identity or be neo-tribal identity of a bulwark defender. The above – mentioned processes and phenomena challenge contemporary education by creating new chances as well as jeopardizing socialization of youth.
    Istotnym aspektem procesów globalnych jest wyłanianie się i wzrost znaczenia nowego rodzaju pograniczy kulturowych, do których zaliczamy przede wszystkim cyberprzestrzeń oraz przestrzenie globalnego miasta. Stanowią one obszary, których mieszkańcy uczestniczą w złożonych układach społeczno-kulturowych nacechowanych wielością kontekstów i układów, migotliwością, hybrydyzacją i kreolizacją treści, jak również wielotorowością oddziaływań socjalizujących i wychowawczych. Wielość owych układów sprawia, że zmienia się znaczenie miejsca spostrzeganego już nie tyle jako przestrzeń fizyczna, lecz coraz częściej definiowanego w kategoriach symbolicznych odwołujących się do jego historii i tradycji. Sygnalizowane procesy mają duże znaczenie dla kształtowania się tożsamości osób żyjących w obszarach globalnego pogranicza, kreując zarówno człowieka pogranicza, jak też wykorzenionego kulturowo człowieka proteańskiego czy strybalizowanego człowieka szańca zamykającego się w granicach neoplemion. Zjawiska, o których mowa, stwarzają przy tym zarówno szanse, jak i zagrożenia wychowawcze, na które powinna odpowiedzieć współczesna edukacja.

Studia Edukacyjne nr 56, 2020, Poznań 2020, pp. 153-166. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 1233-6688. DOI: 10.14746/se.2020.56.8 Today, stereotypically seniors are assigned many negative traits. One of them is their lack of digital competences, which in consequence leads to their exclusion from modern social life. Given that modern Western societies are rapidly aging, this problem is becoming a social issue that needs to be addressed. A significant part of society must not be allowed to live as outcasts. In this situation, a question arises whether contemporary seniors are definitively excluded, or is age not an apparent premise in their case, and the problem lies elsewhere? The analysis of the collected empirical material revealed that the variable determining the level and type of social participation in virtual society is not age, but the level of education. Therefore, contrary to the prevailing views, seniors are not at risk of information exclusion and it is difficult to consider them as digital immigrants. Contrary to stereotypes, seniors are more distant, selective and pragmatic; independence allows them not to imitate culture and lifestyles, but to create them in contrast to the generation of their grandchildren.

    The next decade was announced by WHO as the Decade of Healthy Aging. This is the answer to the social issue of highly developed countries, which is the aging of the society. In this context, there is the problem of active participation of seniors in social life, and especially the prevention of their social marginalization. Hence, projects that counteract exclusion and support active aging processes largely refer to modern technologies. Searching for answers to these questions and dilemmas, this text adopts an interdisciplinary approach, situating undertaken analyzes in the context of theories of aging, motivation as well as learning and using new technologies. The conclusions of the research undertaken – theoretical and empirical studies – undermine the hypothesis of digital exclusion of seniors perceived as the age group category. In the light of this research, it seems that education is the factor that influences the development of digital divide and digital inequalities within the community.
