Opis:
The most recent incarnation of distributed paradigm is cloud computing. It can be seen as the first widely accepted business model of mass consumption of the distributed computing resources. Despite the differences in business models and technical details regarding cloud platforms, the distributed computing underlies cloud. Communications in cloud systems include transmissions of the results of cloud applications, users interactions, and exchange of data between different services that compose applications. The latter becomes more critical as applications become richer as well as more complex, and may consist of services operated by various providers. The effective communication between components of cloud systems is thus critical to the end user satisfaction and to the success of cloud services. We will discuss different cloud computing models (communication aware and unaware). Main focus will be placed on communication-aware directed acyclic graph (CA-DAG), which extends the classical DAG model by explicitly modeling communication tasks. Moreover, we will analyze and consult computational complexity of this innovative distributed computation model inspired by the characteristics of cloud computing. Providing a proof of strong NP-hardness of the problem allows for a future implementation and evolution of the communication-aware DAG models.

Opis:
The single cell gel electrophoresis method, known as comet assay, is a rapid and sensitive technique for testing novel chemicals and nanoparticles for genotoxicity, monitoring environmental contamination with genotoxins and human biomonitoring. In our studies we check the applicability of this method for the evaluation of biocompatibility of modified (MWNF) and non-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) as well as potential genotoxicity of mercury(II) nitrate. The obtained results enabled us to conclude that the presence of Hg(NO₃)₂ (p<0.001) and MWNT (p<0.04) cause a significantly higher level of DNA damage in comparison to functionalised nanomaterials MWNF. It was implied that for the three investigated agents only mercury significantly enhanced genotoxic effect of X-ray exposure (p<0.001) and inhibition of radio-induced DNA damage repair. On the contrary, the presence of MWNF have no influence on cellular repair efficiencies, while incubation with MWNT causes apoptosis and consequently results in lack of attached cells. In conclusion, our results confirmed the genotoxicity of mercury and non-modified carbon nanotubes as well as the biocompatibility of modified nanotubes. Additionally, we proved the usefulness of comet method for the evaluation of genotoxicity and DNA repair under the influence of different compounds and nanomaterials.

Opis:
Hyacinthoides hispanica (Mill.) Rothm. is a valuable bulbous ornamental plant grown in parks and gardens. It comes from the Iberian Peninsula, hence its cultivation under Polish conditions may be inefficient. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of growing conditions and foliar feeding using phosphorous fertilizer on the growth and decorative qualities of H. hispanica. It was found that the pine bark layer effectively protected the plants from freezing, which had a beneficial effect on their growth and flowering characteristics. Flowering of plants grown without the mulch was minimal, which clearly indicates that mulching of the soil under H. hispanica can be necessary. Plants grown using the mulch produced more and longer leaves, and also formed more inflorescences and fruits as well as longer inflorescence stems. The addition of peat to the soil did not favour the growth and decorative qualities of H. hispanica, while foliar nutrition with phosphorous had a positive effect. In addition, the decorative values of H. hispanica were influenced by the interaction of soil mulching with bark and foliar feeding. Plants grown in this combination had more inflorescences, which were higher, composed of more flowers in the inflorescence and reached a greater diameter than non-fertilized ones. Tested cultivars of H. hispanica differed in their features of growth and flowering.

Opis:
The aim of the research was the evaluation of sprinkler irrigation and nitrogen fertilization on some selected features of the quality of malt and wort from ‘Marthe’ and ‘Mauritia’ malting barley grains. The field experiment was carried out in the years 2010-2012 at the Research Station of the University of Science and Technology in Mochełek near Bydgoszcz. As a result of 3-year field experiment and laboratory test of grain, malt and wort, it was found that introducing sprinkler irrigation into the production process of malting barley is a step justified by the obtained quality effects. It was found that in the case of irrigated malting barley cultivations nitrogen fertilization at the rate of 30 kg·ha-1 provides (in relation to control, non-irrigated treatment) the highest values of such parameters as weight of the technical barley crops, content of protein, extractivity of Pilsen type malt, amount of obtained wort and simplified mashing efficiency. The combination of sprinkler irrigation of malting barley plants with their nitrogen fertilization at the increased rates of 60 and 90 kg·ha-1, resulted in the following effect – high mass of the usable grain of crops remained but their quality deteriorated. Malt produced from malting barley fertilized with nitrogen at the rates of 60 and 90 kg·ha-1, in spite of applied sprinkler irrigation, was characterized by unacceptable – from the technological point of view - increased content of protein in malt in the amount of over 11.5% d.m., as well as huge decrease in malt extractivity (even by 2%) and lower, simplified mashing efficiency (below 70%).

Opis:
In recent years, a growing interest has been observed in research on RNA (ribonucleic acid), primarily due to the discovery of the role of RNA molecules in biological systems. They not only serve as templates in protein synthesis or as adapters in the translation process, but also influence and are involved in the regulation of gene expression. The RNA degradation process is now heavily studied as a potential source of such riboregulators. In this paper, we consider the so-called RNA partial degradation problem (RNA PDP). By solving this combinatorial problem, one can reconstruct a given RNA molecule, having as input the results of the biochemical analysis of its degradation, which possibly contain errors (false negatives or false positives). From the computational point of view the RNA PDP is strongly NP-hard. Hence, there is a need for developing algorithms that construct good suboptimal solutions. We propose a heuristic approach, in which two tabu search algorithms cooperate, in order to reconstruct an RNA molecule. Computational tests clearly demonstrate that the proposed approach fits well the biological problem and allows to achieve near-optimal results. The algorithm is freely available at http://www.cs.put.poznan.pl/arybarczyk/tabusearch.php.

Opis:
The Internet shopping optimization problem arises when a customer aims to purchase a list of goods from a set of web-stores with a minimum total cost. This problem is NP-hard in the strong sense. We are interested in solving the Internet shopping optimization problem with additional delivery costs associated to the web-stores where the goods are bought. It is of interest to extend the model including price discounts of goods. The aim of this paper is to present a set of optimization algorithms to solve the problem. Our purpose is to find a compromise solution between computational time and results close to the optimum value. The performance of the set of algorithms is evaluated through simulations using real world data collected from 32 web-stores. The quality of the results provided by the set of algorithms is compared to the optimal solutions for small-size instances of the problem. The optimization algorithms are also evaluated regarding scalability when the size of the instances increases. The set of results revealed that the algorithms are able to compute good quality solutions close to the optimum in a reasonable time with very good scalability demonstrating their practicability.

Internet shopping has been one of the most common online activities, carried out by millions of users every day. As the number of available offers grows, the difficulty in getting the best one among all the shops increases as well. In this paper we propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model and two heuristic solutions, the MinMin algorithm and the cellular processing algorithm, to tackle the Internet shopping optimization problem with delivery costs. The obtained results improve those achieved by the state-of-the-art heuristics, and for small real case scenarios ILP delivers exact solutions in a reasonable amount of time.

Opis:
During the years 2012 to 2014 some research connected with highbush blueberry was taken. It described phenotypic and genotypic variability of 19 cultivars of highbush blueberries grown in the Lublin region. The cultivars included in the study were: ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Bluejay’, ‘Blueray’, ‘Bonifacy’, ‘Bonus’, ‘Brigitta Blue’, ‘Chandler’, ‘Chanticleer’, ‘Croatan’, ‘Darrow’, ‘Duke’, ‘Earliblue’, ‘Herbert’, ‘Jersey’, ‘Northland’, ‘Nelson’, ‘Patriot’, ‘Toro’ and ‘Spartan’. The flowering of highbush blueberry can be observed from the end of April to the beginning of June. Meanwhile, ripening depended on cultivar, starting from June 29th and finishing by September 7th. The strongest vegetative growth was characteristic of ‘Bluecrop’ cultivar on the oldest plantation – Niemce, whereas on the Spiczyn 1 – ‘Darrow’ cultivar, and ‘Patriot’ proved to be the best yielding cultivar on the youngest plantation. In the study, berries of the ‘Chandler’ cultivar were the largest, and berries of the ‘Northland’ cultivar were considered to be the smallest. To evaluate the tested cultivars at the DNA level RAPD markers were used. The set of 9 analysing primers generated a total of 91 fragments of which 81 (89%) were polymorphic. The average genetic similarity determined on the basis of the similarity matrix of RAPD markers was 0.41. Application of the UPGMA method for grouping varieties showed the highest distinction of cultivars: ‘Croatan’, ‘Chanticleer’, ‘Herbert’ and ‘Brigitta Blue’, in relation to the others. Among the tested cultivars genetic variation was detected since genetic similarity ranged from 0.22 to 0.60. Nevertheless the same cultivars grown in different locations demonstrated genetic identity.
W latach 2012–2014 przeprowadzono badania określające zróżnicowanie na poziomie fenotypowym i genotypowym 19 odmian borówki wysokiej uprawianych na Lubelszczyźnie. Doświadczenie uwzględniało odmiany: Bluecrop, Bluejay, Blueray, Bonifacy, Bonus, Brigitta Blue, Chandler, Chanticleer, Croatan, Darrow, Duke, Earliblue, Herbert, Jersey, Northland, Nelson, Patriot, Toro i Spartan. Zastosowanie grupowania odmian metodą UPGMA wykazało największą odrębność odmian: Croatan, Chanticleer, Herbert i Brigitta Blue w stosunku do pozostałych. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają przydatność markerów RAPD w ocenie zróżnicowania genetycznego odmian borówki wysokiej.

Opis:
An increasing number of known RNA 3D structures contributes to the recognition of various RNA families and identification of their features. These tasks are based on an analysis of RNA conformations conducted at different levels of detail. On the other hand, the knowledge of native nucleotide conformations is crucial for structure prediction and understanding of RNA folding. However, this knowledge is stored in structural databases in a rather distributed form. Therefore, only automated methods for sampling the space of RNA structures can reveal plausible conformational representatives useful for further analysis. Here, we present a machine learning-based approach to inspect the dataset of RNA three-dimensional structures and to create a library of nucleotide conformers. A median neural gas algorithm is applied to cluster nucleotide structures upon their trigonometric description. The clustering procedure is two-stage: (i) backbone- and (ii) ribose-driven. We show the resulting library that contains RNA nucleotide representatives over the entire data, and we evaluate its quality by computing normal distribution measures and average RMSD between data points as well as the prototype within each cluster.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of an implant made of a terpolymer (PTFE-PVDF-PP) on the condition of rabbit eyes during a one year observation period. Methods: The implant in the shape of an equilateral triangle (3 mm side length) was manufactured from a thin hydrophobic porous membrane. There were evaluated 40 eyes of 20 rabbits. The animals had non-penetrating very deep sclerectomy (NPVDS) performed, with insertion of an implant in the form of a triangular thin membrane. The control group consisted of 20 eyes where the animals had NPVDS performed without implant insertion. The evaluations included the study of the anterior part of the eye together with photographic documentation. Histopathological examination of the eyes 52 weeks after NPVDS procedure has been made. The process of wound healing was comparable in both groups. Results: The evaluation of the rabbits did not reveal any acute process of intraocular inflammation. After 12 month period of observation, no statistically significant differences in the process of wound healing or status of eyes were found between the groups. An analysis of fibrous connective tissue attachment to the implant showed that its layer was not thick and did not differ significantly from the control. The procedure of very deep sclerectomy and insertion of a polymer implant were well tolerated by the rabbit eyes. Conclusions: The in vivo results indicate that the hydrophobic implant in the form of a membrane can serve as a sclera implant after further study.
