Opis:
Since the dawn of democracy in 1994, the South African government has had various farmer support programmes. This study investigated the impact of the Recapitalisation and Development Programme (RADP) on agricultural production in Gauteng province, South Africa. A survey was conducted involving all 51 beneficiaries of RADP in Gauteng province. Primary data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and two-tailed t-test analysis were performed on the data using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. The results show that the overall impact of RADP on agricultural production (crops and livestock) was not statistically significant. However, the area cultivated with maize and spinach improved significantly, while potatoes, soya beans, cabbage, tomatoes and green peas showed an insignificant increase in their cultivated area. It is recommended that key production requirements be identified to assist RADP in providing support that improves the agricultural production of the beneficiaries.

Opis:
There are low levels of farm mechanization in South Africa despite government efforts to improve access to infrastructure and finance through the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP). The objective of this study is to assess the levels of mechanisation in the emerging sector and the determinants thereof. The sample size consisted of 163 randomly selected maize and sunflower emerging farmers in North West Province. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to assess level of mechanization and the Tobit regression model was used to analyze factors that influence usage of farm machinery. The study revealed that variables including land tenure (p < 0.05), financial assistance (p < 0.01), access to loans (p < 0.05), and accessibility to road infrastructure (p < 0.01) positively influenced usage of mechanization. In addition, the variable age (p < 0.01) had a negative statistically significant influence on farm mechanization. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the government should consider scaling up the CASP to finance more farmers and review its land reform policy to ensure ownership of land to more young smallholder farmers who can use mechanization services for efficient agricultural production.

Opis:
Climate change has increased temperature, caused drought in places like North West Province, and reduced crop yield. This study investigated the climate change impact (rainfall) on maize yield (1987 -2017). The objectives were to determine the climate change impact on maize yield for Kwazulu-Natal, North West, and Free State Provinces of South Africa, assess the difference in climate change impact on maize yield between the three provinces. Rainfall and maize data were collected from WeatherSA and DAFF, respectively. A Pearson Correlation Analysis revealed a weak negative correlation between rainfall and maize for KwaZulu-Natal and Free State Provinces. However, for North West Province there was a weak positive correlation between maize yield and rainfall. Rainfall determines yield, if excessive, it becomes detrimental to crop yield. Climate change affected negatively on maize yield, rainfall above maize requirement was not beneficial to crop yield and drought reduced yield too. ANOVA results revealed that the group mean yield between the Provinces was different, with KwaZulu-Natal having the highest mean yield. The climate change impact on maize varied between provinces, KwaZulu-Natal Province was least affected, however, North West Province was the most negatively impacted with drought events leading to reduced maize yield.
