Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of age at first calving on the milking performance of primiparous Jersey cows (261 cows). Analyses were conducted on 2461 test day milking samples from 17.09.2007 to 26.07.2016. The primiparous cows were divided into four groups according to their age at first calving (≤ 24, > 24–26, > 26–28, > 28 months), and their daily milk yields were compared. Fourfold contingency tables were prepared to investigate the distribution of the population of cows calving at different ages and the peak daily milk yield. The significance of the association between factors was estimated using Fisher's exact test. To illustrate the course of 305-day lactation in primiparous cows varying in age at first calving, linear graphs were plotted with linear trends for daily milk yields. Primiparous Jersey cows calving at the age of > 26–28 months of life had the highest daily milk yield. In terms of the contents of basic milk constituents in the first lactation, the most advantageous age at first calving was > 24–26 months of life. However, a younger age at first calving (≤ 24 months) was associated with a lower somatic cell count in milk as well as a more favourable lactation curve for daily milk yield. The results of the study may suggest that Jersey cows calving at an earlier age (up to 24 months) may have a longer productive life and thus better performance parameters.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine effects of genotype and selected environmental factors on colostrum production, intake, and efficiency in the cattle. The investigations were conducted on 67 dam-calf pairs. All cows were of Polish Holstein-Friesian breed, the Black-and-White variety (PHF-HO), whereas calves were sired by bulls of the following breeds: PHF-HO, Polish Holstein-Friesian of the Red-and-White variety (PHF-RW), Jersey (JE), Montbéliarde (MB) and Limousine (LI). The colostrum was collected from cows and offered to calves "from bucket" thrice a day. The amount of produced colostrum considerably exceeded the ability of its consumption by calves. Low share of HF genes in the cow, older cow's age and calving in the period from January to April appeared to be favorable factors for colostrum production. Calves born to cows with low HF gene share drank more colostrum than calves originating from cows with higher gene share of this breed. Crosses with JE drank the highest amount of the colostrum in relation to body weight, while MB-sired calves drank the highest amount in absolute terms. Colostrum intake was positively correlated with the dam's age. Furthermore, it was shown that in case of the first colostrum intake the most favorable period was from May to September, while in cases of total intake in the first day of life and mean intake in the first 5 days of life it was the period from January to April. Crosses with JE were characterized by extremely high use of colostrum per unit of body weight gain.

Opis:
Achene macro- and micromorphology and pericarp anatomy are described in four Polish species of Anemone (A. narcissiflora, A. nemorosa, A. ranunculoides, A. sylvestris). Biometric analysis showed that achene size varies greatly in all the studied species and is of limited diagnostic value. Three types of sculpture connected with the character of the indumentum were distinguished. The presence or absence of stomata on the achene style and the character of the hair base differentiated A. nemorosa and A. ranunculoides, which have the same type of pericarp ornamentation. The endocarp (number of layers and outline of its cells) was shown to be useful in the systematics of Anemone.

Opis:
Pyrus ×myloslavensis is a hybrid with intermediate characteristics of leaves and fruits inherited from its parental species P. salicifolia and P. communis. The aim of this study was to determine whether these intermediate nature of this taxon would be visible in the pollen and seed anatomy and morphology. In addition, the authors evaluated self-compatibility and crossability based on the observation of pollen tube growth. The investigations were carried out using light, fluorescence and electron microscopies and flow cytometer. Based on pollen and seed morphology the current study confirmed a hybrid origin of the investigated taxon. Especially, pollen grains had most features similar to both parental species. In respect to epidermal micromorphology, the seeds of P. ×myloslaviensis were like P. salicifolia, but anatomical structure of the seed coat of the hybrid was more consistent with P. communis. The data obtained from the current experiment showed that P. ×myloslavensis was self-incompatible and cross-compatible only with one of four tested P. communis cultivars (‘Conference’) and with P. salicifolia. In turn, the average genome size of the hybrid was smaller than putative parents.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate seed morphology and intra- and inter-population variation of seeds of Trollius europaeus L. and Trollius altissimus Crantz., two controversial species regarding their taxonomical position. We analyzed seed-coat microsculpture and some biometrical traits (length and width, width/length ratio, volume and projected perimeter). Seed sculpture did not differ between species, but seeds of T. altissimus were usually larger than seeds of T. europaeus. Although species differed significantly in seed morphology, it was possible to show the populations of both species that were similar regarding the analyzed seed traits. We noted a significant inter-population differentiation of seeds in both species with respect to seed-coat microornamentation and biometrical traits. We conclude that T. europaeus and T. altissimus are probably not two distinct species, but T. europaeus should be divided into two lower taxa in the rank of variety or subspecies.
