The article is connected with the conditions and strategies of the Polish psychologists’ and pedagogues’ scientific work in the interwar period. None of them pursued the ‘classical’ academic path, in terms of official employment status and promotion within a university. Most of them worked in the Wolna Wszechnica Polska. Women who were distinguished by their activity in the field of research were Helena Radlińska, Maria Grzegorzewska, Józefa Joteyko, Ludwika Karpińska-Woyczyńska. They attended the internal and transnational scientific life taking part in conferences and conventions, publishing scientific papers in Polish and foreign scientific journals. The significant strategy of the women handling the science was also their participation in the social and learned societies.

In Polish social and economic discussion of the problems of population there were more opponents than advocates of the Malthus’s law. By criticizing the theory the opponents found the point of reference for their own principles. The publicists and scholars representing various circles and philosophies of life emphasized the need to standardize the level of fertility. They did not agree with the idea that the process of reproduction of population does not need to be connected with limitation of birth-rate. L. Krzywicki and Z. Daszyńska-Golińska who sympathized with socialistic tendencies did not agree with Malthus’s recommendation of sexual restraint. They thought that only social reforms and the improvement of conditions of living of the working class can influence their procreation activity. The publicists connected with Catholic church claimed that the creation of the law of population of neo-malthusianism is one of the consequences of theory of the English economist which, in their view, discredited its value. The economists who distanced from socialistic ideas frequently agreed with numerous theses of the law of population. One of them was the advocate of economic liberalism A. Krzyżanowski. The polemics on theory of population by Malthus in Polish, as well as in European commentary expanded the discussion and the exchange of opinions on social and economic relations. It also drew attention to the necessity of formulation of population politics. Many scholars who in their journals on the turn of XIXth century paid attention to the themes of population and who analysed the idea through the prism of Malhus’s theory used the experiences in the second Reich and included the demographic ideas to political programs of social and economic reconstruction of Poland.

During the difficult epoch when there was no independent Polish state, the medical periodicals played an important role in the development of the medical disciplines. Doctors wrote about the problem of social pathology and the prostitution as early as in the half of the XIXth century when the topic was claimed to be immoral and it was tabooed by the public opinion. The intensification of interest took place after 1905. Medical journals (for instance, „Medicine”, „Health”, „Physicians’ Gazette”, „Physicians’ Survey”) became the place of discussion of the topic of various social pathologies. The doctors published also their articles in social journals. The doctors cooperated with the activists who fought with prostitution, venereal diseases and alcoholism (for instance, the publicists of „Purity”). Much attention was paid to the fact of negative consequences for health of the prostitutes (most of all their venereal diseases), moral and social aspects of their profession. The doctors tried to point to the reasons for prostitution and also the ways of limiting the pathology. One of the most important demands claimed by the doctors was sexual education of the young generation (K. StróŜewski, L. Wernic, Z. Srebrny). The issue of discussion and arguments was also the attitude towards the system of control of public prostitution. Many doctors thought it had been necessary to control the prostitution (L. Grabowski, F. Giedroyć). It was to be done by police and doctors although, at the same time, there were many advocates of abolitionism (L. Wernic, J. Budzińska-Tylicka). The visions of the doctors were connected with the hope of regaining independence. The intelligentsia tried to mark the elements of social policy which might be continued in a free country.

Hand-books and magazines are a valuable source facilitating the research of nutrition habits, including children’s nutrition which is widely discussed by the historians from health, biological, economic, social and cultural perspectives. Doctors and hygienists in the Kingdom of Poland popularized the results of the research of West European specialists. Newspapers and hand-books described new ways of pasteurization and sterilization of milk, new means of preparing animal milk and giving it to infants. Much attention was paid to nutrition, including the appropriate diet of young people. There were many articles describing, for instance, so called, chlorosis, among girls. The need to change traditional nutrition habits was emphasised. What the young people and children ate conditioned their health and strength, which on the other hand, influenced their psycho physical condition and intellectual ability. It was therefore an important element of health education. The sources discussed are a significant basis for the research of nutrition patterns and the creation of uniform tendency and standardss concerning nutrition of children in the XIXth and at the beginning of the XXth centuries.

XIX-th century and at the beginning of the XX-th century was to hand down to younger generations patriotic values. To assure the continuity of the nation and to have the guarantee of the futurę freedom became sine qua non condition. It also became one of the main values of the gentry ethos. Gentry accepted the role of depositary of Polish nationality. The defeat of the November Uprising and the reprisals of the partitioning powers led to the radicalisation of attitudes, and of crucial importance became a principle to conflate the national cause with religion, which in tum led to crystallisation of the term „patriotic religion” whose upholder and priest became a woman - „Mother Pole”. Within the whole epoch the education of children was significant. In order to save them from the indoctrination they were taught national history, tradition and literature at home which stood in the opposition to the teaching officially practiced at school. The further evolution of the model was influenced greatly by the defeat of the January Uprising and the political and socio-economic transformations in the wake of it. The basis of a modem society was to be its young generation. It was their mother who were supposed to look after their health, bringing-up and education, and the postulates to improve the ąuality of parental care became one of the elements of „organie labour”. The new reality of life made it necessary by the end of the XIX-th century to reinterpret the idea of patriotic upbringing which was integrated with morał and hygienic education. In spite of numerous differences conceming the upbringing one can point to many common pattems of education of young generation. The models were not dependent on territorial, political or mental divisions which created so called “awareness of being one social body”. Family and social gatherings facilitated the process of unity above the borders of occupation. Many families paid attention to systematic contacts with other families both personal and in written form. There were also popular visits at families’and trips to places of cultural importance. Growing up children travelled between the occupied territories which was an important element of socializing and patriotic education which, on the other hand, was protection against assimilation with the culture oftheoccupant.

Z punktu widzenia badań w naukach humanistycznych i społecznych (pedagogika, historia edukacji, socjologia, etnologia) ważnym problemem jest dyskusja nad pozycją i rolą dziecka w rodzinie robotniczej, warunkami jego socjalizacji i normami wychowawczymi w czasie intensywnych społeczenych i ekonomicznych zmian. Sytuacja finansowa, struktura rodziny, więzi uczuciowe, kulturowe przesłanie środowiska wpływały na metody i cele wychowania dzieci. Rekonstrukcja tego zjawiska jest możliwa ze względu na źródła archiwalne (np. dokumenty organizacji społecznych, które wspierały biedne rodziny miejskie), czasopisma, przewodniki, pamiętniki, dane statystyczne, akty prawne (np. prawa dotyczące dzieci i młodzieży), materiały etnologiczne, literaturę, fotografie oraz liczne rozwiązania metodologiczne używane w tamtym czasie.
From the point of view of studies in humanities and social science (pedagogy, history of education, sociology, ethnology) an important issue of discussion is the position and the role of a child in a workingclass family, the conditions of his so182 cializing and the norms of education at the time of intensive social and economic changes. Financial situation, the structure of a family, emotional ties, cultural message of the environment influenced the methods and aims of bringing up children. The reconstruction of the phenomenon is possible due to the archive sources (for instance, the documents of social organizations which supported poor town families), newspapers, guide books, diaries, statistic data, acts of law (for instance, laws concerning children and young people), ethnologic materials, literature, photographs, and numerous methodological solutions used at that time.

Lekarze i higieniści, zaangażowani społecznikowsko, pisali o zdrowiu, higienie i wychowaniu młodego pokolenia, także z uwzględnieniem kryteriów eugenicznych. Zmedykalizowana postawa wobec młodzieży była przejawem dążenia do jej kontroli i dyscyplinowania.
The article concerns the hygienization and medicalization of attitudes towards young people in the Kingdom of Poland at the beginning of the 20th century in the abundant literature (both scholarly and popularizing) of the Warsaw Hygiene Society. The socially active doctors and hygienists wrote about the health, hygiene and education of young people, employing eugenic criteria. The medicalized attitude towards young people was a manifestation of attempts to control and discipline them.

The studied monograph concerns attempts at the transfer of modern, American ideals of childhood and the paradigms and norms of family life to Poland. Protective and pedagogic activities based on the rules of “modern philanthropy” are presented in a very noteworthy way, although the author does not employ numerous valuable studies and theoretic and methodological conceptions from Polish scholars.

Zastosowano metody badań historyczno-pedagogicznych, w tym metodę filologiczną, służąca analizie tekstów źródeł historycznych.Proces wywodu: Po wprowadzeniu w problematykę przedstawiono trzy wyodrębnione zagadnienia: obraz pijaństwa jako problemu społecznego i moralnego w piśmiennictwie religijnym, kwestię medykalizacji alkoholizmu, widoczną również w kontekście rozważań o rodzinie, wreszcie obecność w źródłach problemu alkoholowego opisywanego jako przyczyna degeneracji rodziny i społeczeństwa.Wyniki analizy naukowej: Sposób ukazywania alkoholizmu ulegał istotnym przeobrażeniom. Dyskusja na temat alkoholizmu jako czynnika zagrażającemu rodzinie i wychowaniu młodego pokolenia łączyła się z polemikami na szereg ogólnych tematów, takich jak relacje między rodziną a społeczeństwem, rola religii i nauki w rozwiązywaniu problemów społecznych, znaczenie rodziny w koncepcjach odbudowy polskiej państwowości.Wnioski, innowacje, rekomendacje: analiza wypowiedzi o alkoholizmie jako zagrożeniu rodziny może służyć dalszym badaniom nad konstruowaniem obrazu rodziny i przemianami jej etosu u progu niepodległości.

In the last decades of the 19th century, in the Kingdom of Poland, the scale of social pathologies increased, including infanticide and abandonment of children. Such phenomena were conditioned by a number of social, demographic, economic and moral factors; the processes of urbanization and industrialization played a major part as they resulted in the inflow of great masses of people to cities, who experienced difficulties in the adaptation to new conditions. Poverty, illiteracy, often the lack of steady employment, disintegration of the traditional social groups and the system of values lead to the destabilization of the situation of the immigratory population. This made starting a family difficult, leading to a large number of informal relationships, lone mothers and illegitimate children deprecated by public opinion. The hardships of lonely maternity, lack of support on the part of the state administration and shelters determined the increased number of crimes against children. Also, unfavourable was a common practice of employing wet nurses, who left their own children in the care of hired babysitters, who were knowingly called the “producers of angels” because of the fact of a huge mortality rate among such infants, dying as a result of disastrous care, or, sometimes, simply murdered. Social work of pedagogues, doctors and lawyers slightly improved the fate of the poorest mothers, who most often committed infanticide and abandonment of their children, and, consequently, the scale of such phenomena at the beginning of the 20th century slightly decreased.

After the January Uprising in the Kingdom of Poland, across half of the following century, industrial development was mostly connected with social reforms. One tragic consequence of it was the increase in the number of children without parental protection, juvenile beggars, tramps, young criminals and prostitutes. During the last thirty years of the 19th century it became a priority in the Kingdom of Poland to pay attention to the education and protection of children and teenagers from the poorest families. Numerous innovative and educational concepts were formulated at that time; some of them were used in centres for socially maladjusted young people, for instance in Studzieniec, Mariańska Wilderness or Struga, in centres for young prostitutes. The activity of educational centres and societies which organised the protection of children (for example, The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) was given as an example.

Lack of a universal pension system in the Kingdom of Poland in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries was one of the factors contributing to the difficult situation of the elderly from non-elite social strata, particularly in the face of insufficient support of the families. The homeless, who often also suffered from diseases, were crippled and begged, found themselves in a particularly difficult situation, men and women alike. Organising institutional social protection and medical care for this group required instant action. The priority was to establish homes for old people and various types of residential homes. This was primarily handled by charities for which medical care and welfare of the elderly were among the most important areas of activity. Old people’s homes were also established by religious communities and individualsas well as institutions operating on a self-help basis.

The first four decades of the twentieth century saw an intense development in the Polish lands of educational sciences and social policy sciences. A role of importance in the development of the underlying theory for these scientific domains and in the pursuit of pioneering empirical studies fell to a group of women who combined their intellectual interests and scientific research with activities in the fields of education and social work. This article seeks to outline their scholarly achievements (until 1939) and point to the specificity of their effort: none of them pursued a ‘classical’ academic career comprehended in terms of getting employed and promoted by a university. Their formative experience consisted in studying abroad and obtaining their doctoral degrees there. Migrations and membership in (or contribution to) international scientific organisations enabled them to deepen their knowledge and present their theories in the international forum whilst also making them acquainted with the academic models functioning in West European countries in the context of female participation. The personal histories of Polish female scholars researching into education and social history show the ‘typical’ experience of reluctance and arbitrariness of the academic circles, male-dominated as they were at that time when gender weighed high on career-seeking in science. This implied search for strategies and areas of activity which enabled to participate in the world of science. Pursuance of research, in selected areas, and publication of scholarly texts was enabled through the cooperation with organisations which welcomed female experts such as those employed (for example) with ministries; the Polish Society for Social Policy was one such organisation. In spite of multiple hindrances and restrictions, those female scholars who got employed on a full-time basis with academies which were ‘alternative’ to the traditional universities – the Institute of Special Pedagogy, the State Institute of Teachers, and primarily, the Free Polish University – enjoyed the most favourable conditions of work.

Przedmiotem badań niniejszego artykułu są ochronki i ich miejsce w systemie opiekuńczo-wychowawczym w Królestwie Polskim w dobie zaborów. Były one zakładane początkowo przez towarzystwa dobroczynne, później także przez inne organizacje społeczne, gminy wyznaniowe, zgromadzenia zakonne oraz osoby prywatne. Zdecydowany wzrost liczby ochronek w miastach i na wsiach Królestwa miał miejsce na początku XX wieku. Problem ten nie jest dokładnie zbadany przez historyków i pedagogów, tymczasem zachowało się wiele źródeł, które przekazują informacje na temat okoliczności i zasad zakładania oraz funkcjonowania ochronek. Celem tekstu jest wskazanie najważniejszych grup źródeł historycznych, przydatnych w badaniach nad tym tematem. Są to m.in. materiały archiwalne, zawarte w Archiwum Głównym Akt Dawnych oraz w archiwach państwowych. Ważną kategorią źródłową są monografie polskich społeczników i intelektualistów, propagujące zakładanie placówek opiekuńczo-wychowawczych dla dzieci. Dużą wartość w badaniach nad ochronkami mają źródła epistolograficzne i memuarystyka, tworzone przez założycieli, pracowników i wychowanków ochronek. Wiele informacji na temat działalności ochronek znajduje się w pamiętnikach, dziennikach i wspomnieniach, z których część wydano drukiem, część pozostaje w zasobach archiwalnych. Szczególnie wartościową kategorią źródeł jest czasopiśmiennictwo. Na łamach prasy społeczno-kulturalnej, fachowej, wyznaniowej, kobiecej oraz w codziennych gazetach zamieszczano sprawozdania z działalności konkretnych placówek oraz artykuły na temat znaczenia ochronek w modernizacji systemu opieki i wychowania oraz stosowanych w nich metodach i formach pracy.
The subject of this article are orphanages and their place in the educational care system of the Kingdom of Poland at the time of the Partitions. Initially, they were established by charities, but later also by other social organisations, religious communities, congregations and individuals. A great increase in the number of orphanages in towns and villages of the Kingdom took place in early 20th century. This issue has not been thoroughly investigated by historians and educationists, and at the same time, numerous sources were preserved which convey information on the circumstances and principles of the establishing and functioning of orphanages. The aim of this article is to indicate the most important groups of historical sources, which could be useful in research into this topic. They include archival materials collected in the Central Archives of Historical Records and in state archives. An important source category are the monographs of Polish social activists and intellectuals which propagated the need to establish educational care facilities for children. Epistolographic sources and memoirs written by founders, employees and children raised in orphanages also present high value for research into this topic. A lot of information concerning the operation of orphanages is found in journals, diaries and memoirs, of which some were published and some still remain in archival records. A particularly valuable category of sources is the periodical press. Social and cultural, professional, religious periodicals, women’s press and daily newspapers included reports from specific institutions as well as articles on the importance of orphanages in the modernisation of the system of educational care and on the methods and forms of work applied there.

W drugiej połowie XIX i na początku XX wieku w Królestwie Polskim społeczność żydowska odgrywała ważną rolę w życiu społecznym, kulturalnym i naukowym. Lekarze pochodzenia żydowskiego często nawiązali współpracę z polskimi lekarzami, byli członkami stowarzyszeń naukowych i społecznych, należeli do redakcji czasopism naukowych, publikowali w periodykach społecznych i zawodowych. Ogromne zaangażowanie przedstawicieli żydowskiego zawodu medycznego było widoczne w zakresie popularyzacji wiedzy. We współpracy z polskimi lekarzami podejmowali trudne problemy medyczne, ale zajmowali się także kwestiami higienicznymi, społecznymi i edukacyjnymi. Byli aktywnymi członkami organizacji i inicjatorami licznych akcji społecznych o charakterze opiekuńczym, edukacyjnym i popularyzatorskim. Współpraca w dziedzinie społeczno-oświatowej pozwoliła zrealizować wiele śmiałych inicjatyw, wpływając na integrację ludności, zwłaszcza w największych miastach.
In the Kingdom of Poland in the second part of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish community played an important role in social, cultural and scientific life. Doctors of Jewish origin very often worked together with Polish doctors. They were members of scientific and social associations; they belonged to the editorial boards of scientific journals; they published in social and professional periodicals. A huge involvement on the part of representatives of the Jewish medical profession was visible as far as popularization of knowledge was concerned. In cooperation with Polish doctors, they took on strictly medical problems, but they also dealt with hygienic, social and educational issues. They were active members of organizations and initiators of numerous social campaigns of a protective, educational and instructive nature. Cooperation in social and educational areas allowed them to carry out a number of bold initiatives, and it contributed to increased integration of the populace, especially in larger cities.

W Królestwie Polskim na przełomie XIX i XX w. nastąpił wzrost patologii społecznych. Zasadniczą rolę w walce z nimi odgrywały działania różnych grup społeczeństwa. Towarzystwa dobroczynne zajmowały się zakładaniem placówek opiekuńczo-wychowawczych dla starców, chorych, dzieci z ubogich rodzin i sierot. Ważnym obszarem działań była walka z alkoholizmem i prostytucją, w tym zapobieganie tym patologiom wśród młodzieży. Duża część działań w tym zakresie była prowadzona pod auspicjami Kościoła katolickiego i innych kościołów chrześcijańskich; w dziedzinie tej zwiększała się także aktywność inteligencji. Działania te były formą realizacji haseł solidaryzmu społecznego.
Social and economic changes in the Kingdom of Poland on the turn of the 19th century were accompanied by the increase of social pathologies. Various groups of society played an important role in fighting the pathologies. Philanthropic societies opened protective and educational institutions for the poor children and deprived of parental care as well as for adults who were not able to work. A meaningful area of activity was the ght with alcoholism and prostitution conducted by a number of societies. Medical circle joined actively the initiative by organizing lectures and exhibitions. One of the most important aims of the activity in this area was the prevention of pathologies among young people. A special attention was paid to the development of various forms of help for children from the poorest town and country families (for instance, the opening of day-nurseries, work-houses, community centres). The initiators of social, protective and educational initiatives for the benet of the poor and excluded appealed to the ideas of philanthropy and charity. A meaningful number of activities was conducted under the auspices of the Catholic church. On the turn of the 19th century various intelligentsia groups joined the initiative. All the activities were the way of the fullment of the ideas of social solidarity.

W polskim piśmiennictwie na początku XX w. uległ zmianie sposób kreacji obrazu dziecka, co wiązało się z dążeniem do modernizacji społeczeństwa, którego podwaliną miało być młode pokolenie, uznawane za nadzieję na przyszłość narodu i państwa. Publicystyka na początku XX w. podejmowała trudne tematy, np. sytuację dzieci w zaniedbanych środowiskach, młodocianych przestępców, nieletnich prostytutek; pozbawione opieki dziecko stanowiło pożądaną figurę retoryczną, czynnik dramatyzujący narrację. Celem publicystów było rozbudzenie poczucia odpowiedzialności opinii publicznej za los dzieci, a choć zmiany te były powolne, miały istotny udział w modelowaniu mentalności i wrażliwości społeczeństwa, tworzyły nową perspektywę myślenia o dziecku i jego pozycji w państwie i społeczeństwie.

Artykuł jest poświęcony młodzieży, która na przełomie XIX i XX w. korzystała z placówek opiekuńczo-wychowawczych – domów dla dzieci osieroconych, sal zajęciowych, zakładów o charakterze resocjalizacyjnym, internatów. W ostatnim trzydziestoleciu XIX w. zdecydowanie wzrosła liczba tego rodzaju instytucji. Instytucjonalizacja wychowania i socjalizacji młodego pokolenia, zwłaszcza młodzieży z ubogich środowisk, była cechą charakterystyczną życia społecznego w epoce nowoczesnej. Celem artykułu jest opisanie tego, jakie kwestie związane z dorastaniem podopiecznych placówek były obecne w źródłach historycznych, jakie natomiast były przemilczane lub tabuizowane. Analizie poddano źródła instytucjonalne, czasopiśmiennictwo oraz literaturę piękną. Zwrócono także uwagę na możliwości analizy źródeł z wykorzystaniem nowych koncepcji teoretycznych z zakresu pedagogiki i socjologii.

Celem artykułu jest syntetyzujące omówienie przemian ideału macierzyństwa na początku XX wieku, w warunkach przeobrażeń życia społecznego na ziemiach polskich u progu nowoczesności. Przedmiotem analizy są działania kobiet – ekspertek w zakresie pedagogiki i medycyny na rzecz upowszechniania wśród matek zaleceń nauki, mających służyć unowocześnieniu praktyk macierzyńskich. Zastosowano metody badań historyczno-pedagogicznych, w tym metodę filologiczną, służącą analizie tekstów źródeł historycznych. W wyniku analizy określono formy i treści przedsięwzięć edukacyjnych. Ustalono, że najważniejszą rolę odgrywały odczyty, wykłady, prelekcje, publikacje w postaci poradników i artykułów w prasie społeczno-kulturalnej i kobiecej, działania edukacyjne realizowane przez lekarki w instytucjach opiekuńczych.

Cel: Celem artykułu jest zbadanie obecności problemu przemocy wobec dzieci w środowisku rodzinnym w prasie fachowej i publicystyce społecznej w Królestwie Polskim na przełomie XIX i XX w. Istotnym zadaniem jest analiza tekstów publicystów, intelektualistów i działaczy społecznych pod kątem tego, jakie problemy, dotyczące przemocy fizycznej i seksualnej wobec dzieci, były podejmowane w publicystyce społecznej i naukowej, i jakie kryteria stosowano w ich wyjaśnianiu. Metody: Zastosowano metody wykorzystywane w badaniach historyczno-pedagogicznych, w tym metodę filologiczną, pozwalającą na dokonanie analizy tekstów pisanych. Wyniki: Ustalono, że w czasopiśmiennictwie na przełomie XIX i XX wieku dokonywano opisu przejawów przemocy i jej uwarunkowań, dążono do określenia przyczyn destabilizacji rodziny, próbowano wskazać sposoby zapobiegania przemocy domowej. Na początku XX wieku już nie tylko w czasopismach specjalistycznych, ale także w prasie społeczno-kulturalnej pisano o przemocy fizycznej oraz molestowaniu i wykorzystywaniu seksualnym. Przedstawiano wyniki badań pedagogów, lekarzy i prawników, dotyczących przemocy w rodzinie wobec dzieci. Podkreślano potrzebę wspierania rodzin mających trudności z wychowaniem potomstwa oraz powołania organizacji społecznej chroniącej dzieci przed zaniedbywaniem, samowolą i okrucieństwem rodziców. W przededniu I wojny wielu specjalistów wypowiadało się o konieczności legitymizacji kontroli państwa nad życiem prywatnym obywateli i ingerencji w życie rodzinne w imię ochrony dziecka. Pisał o tym m.in. Z. Pietkiewicz i A. Mogilnicki. Wnioski: Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku znacznie wzrosło zainteresowanie problematyką przemocy wobec dzieci i młodzieży. Publicyści starali się zwrócić uwagę opinii publicznej na zjawisko wcześniej tabuizowane, dążąc do rozbudzenie poczucia wspólnej odpowiedzialności za los dzieci w rodzinach dysfunkcyjnych. Problem przemocy wyjaśniano wykorzystując aparat pojęciowy i ustalenia teoretyczne z zakresu pedagogiki i nauk jej pokrewnych.
Aim: The aim of the article is to research the presence of the violence towards children in the family environment in the technical press and social journals in the Kingdom of Poland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The crucial task is the analyses of the publicists, intellectuals and community activists’ texts in respect of the kind of problems connected with physical and sexual violence against children, which appeared in the social and science journals. Another big issue is the choice of criteria used in explaining those problems. Methods: In the article some methods were applied which are usually used in the historical and pedagogical researches, including the philological method, which enables the carrying out the analysis of written texts. Results: The research showed that at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the symptoms of the violence and its considerations were described in the print media. There were attempts to determine the causes of family destabilisation andattempts to show ways of preventing domestic violence. At the beginning of the 20th century the problem of physical violence, sexual harassment and abuse was described not only in the technical journals, but also in the social and cultural press. The results of research conducted by pedagogues, doctors and lawyers’ in reagrdto the violence against children in the family environment were presented there. They stressed the need to support families which had difficulties with raising their offspring and to establish a social organisation which would protect children from lawlessness, cruelty and neglect from their parents. On the eve of the outbreak of the First World War, many experts spoke about the need to legitimise the state’s control over the private life of its citizens and interference in the family life for the sake of protecting the child. Z. Pietkiewicz and A. Mogilnicki were among those who wrote about these issues. Conclusions: At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries there was a sudden growth of interest in issues of violence against children and young persons. Publicists tried to capture audience attentionto condition of children in dysfunctional families, which earlier was taboo. The aim of this was to awaken people’ sense of responsibility. The issue of the violence was explained by conceptual apparatus and theoretical arrangements from the field of pedagogy and sciences connected with it.

Opis:
The past three decades have seen a heightened interest in integrating psychology and history in educational research. The aim of this article is to present interdisciplinary approaches combining psychological and historical perspectives in research on education and upbringing of children and youth on the eve of modernity. Using the examples of research projects that blend historical methods with Lifespan Developmental Psychology and Social Psychology, the authors analyse their possibilities and limitations. This article brings a new perspective to the studies on childhood and adolescence, with a special focus on people living in the Polish lands at the turn of the twentieth century.
