Opis:
In the paper the density, height, diameter, slenderness and vitality of the 17 year−old pine young−growth stands depending on the basal area of the shelterwood (four thinning variants: G1−G4). The studies were carried out in eleven 70−90 year−old pine stands heavily damaged in the 80s of the past century by the nun moth (Lymantria monacha L.). With the development of the overstorey the growth, the vitality and the stability of young stands declined. In addition, a decrease in the survival of the young−growth stands under the dense canopy (variant G4) was recorded. A long−term maintenance of young stands under the shelter of the canopy in the areas of low annual precipitation (below 600 mm) requires the reduction of the dbh basal area to the level of at least 15 m3/ha before attaining the age of 15 years.

Opis:
This study presents the results on the structure and volume of many−aged pine stands in private forest holdings managed under semi−selection system. Their volume was ca 150 m3/ha and the basal area ca 20 m3/ha. Pine stands reveal all−age structure. The conditions of reaching the multi−generation pine stands is poor habitat where pine regeneration shows high competitive ability and density distribution of trees, including the occurrence of gaps and openings in stand overstorey ensuring proper conditions for the appearance and development of new regenerations of pine.

Opis:
The paper analyses the height growth and the of height increment of the 18 year−old pine advance regeneration under the shelter of varying canopy densities. A significant effect was found of the stocking of the parental stand on the growth of generation. The height increment increased in response to removal cutting (60% in the second year and 80% in the third year after treatment). In drought years, the greatest relative decrease in height growth of the young−growth stands (by ca 40−60%) occurred in the stands of the greatest canopy closure while it did not occur in the stands to which a removal cutting was applied immediately before the drought year.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to examine the sprouting ability and growth of silver birch after cleaning in a 11−year−old oak stand in Kolumna Forest District (central Poland). The purpose of the cleaning was to remove naturally regenerated birch. Six different treatments were applied as a cleaning methods. They differed in time of application and height of cutting or breaking the birch sprouts, i.e. spring cleaning at ground level in every second oak row (W1) or over the entire surface (W2), cutting or breaking at a height of 1 m in spring (W3a, W3b) and cutting or breaking at a height of 1 m in summer (W4a, W4b). We analyzed the formation of new sprouts and their height and dbh increment over a 4−year period after the treatment. On average, after spring cleaning 10−20% of birches produced new sprouts when birch was cut at the ground level. When cut at one meter, 85−90% of birches produced new sprouts. Cleaning in the summer decreased the sprouting ability by 20−25%. There were also significant differences in height growth of sprout between spring (better) and summer (worse) time of cleaning. There were no significant differences in sprouting ability and sprout growth between cutting and breaking when done at the same time of the year. Thus, the most effective way to restrict competition of birch in young oak stands is cutting at ground level.

Opis:
The paper provides a comparison of growth and survival of Scots pines during first four years after planting in response to two methods of soil preparation using a double mouldboard plough (a conventional method) and by rotary type disc plough. The studies were carried out in the poor fresh coniferous forest habitat. The discussed soil preparation methods had a significant impact on tree height and diameter, however they did not affect pine survival. Pine growing in furrows made by the disc plough exhibited better height growth; the furrows were shallower than those made by the double mouldboard plough. After four years, the height growth of pines in both experimental variants reached the same level which indicates a short−term effect of soil preparation on pine growth.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to analyse the density, survival, height and quality of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings growing in the furrows and on the ridges. On poor sandy soils (fresh coniferous forest habitat) the performance of seedlings growing on ridges was superior while in a moderately fertile type of mixed coniferous forest habitat where the competition of forest floor vegetation was high, natural regeneration occurred almost entirely in the furrows.

Opis:
The role of spruce in shaping the structure and volume of pine stands in the Augustowska Primeval Forest (north−eastern Poland) increases with the increase of site fertility. On poor coniferous forest sites, spruce occurs mainly in an understorey and sporadically as an admixture species, whereas on medium−fertile and fertile sites it builds the second storey and occurs in the upper storey accounting for about 30−40% of stand volume. In mature pine stands of the Augustowska Primeval Forest, spruce comes from natural regeneration. Taking into consideration the course of the regeneration process, four types of spruce age structure are distinguished.
