Opis:
We present the formalism and demonstrate the use of the overlapping muffin-tin approximation. This fits a full potential to a superposition of spherically symmetric short-ranged potential wells plus a constant. For one-electron potentials of this form, the standard multiple-scattering methods can solve Schrödingers' equation correctly to 1st order in the potential overlap. Choosing an augmented-plane-wave method as the source of the full potential, we illustrate the procedure for diamond-structured Si. First, we compare the potential in the Si-centered overlapping muffin-tin approximation with the full potential, and then compare the corresponding overlapping muffin-tin approximation N-th order muffin-tin orbital and full-potential linear augmented plane wave band structures. We find that the two latter agree qualitatively for a wide range of overlaps and that the valence bands have a root mean squared deviation of 20 meV/electron for 30% radial overlap. Smaller overlaps give worse potentials and larger overlaps give larger 2nd-order errors of the multiple-scattering method. To further remove the mean error of the bands for small overlaps is simple.

Opis:
The fatty acid methyl esters (FAME's) - in Europe mostly RME *) (Rapeseed methyl ester; Abbreviations see at the end of this paper) - are used in several countries as alternative biogenic Diesel fuels in various blending ratios with fossil fuels (Bxx). Questions arise often about the influences of these biocomponents on the modern exhaust after-treatment systems and especially on the regeneration of Diesel particle filters (DPF). In the present work different regeneration procedures of DPF systems were investigated with biofuels B0, B20 & B100. The tested regeneration procedures were: - passive regenerations: DOC + CSF; CSF alone, - active regenerations: standstill burner; fuel injections & DOC. During each regeneration on-line measurements of limited and unlimited emission components (nanoparticles & FTIR) was conducted. It can be stated that the increased portion of RME in fuel provokes longer time periods to charge the filter with soot. This is due to the lower PM-emissions of the engine, as well as to the higher reactivity and higher SOF-portion of the particle mass from RME. With the passive regeneration system with stronger catalytic activity (DOC + CSF) there is a stronger NO2-production with B100 and due to the NO2-supported oxidation of PM the balance point temperature is approx. 20 centigrade lower, than with B0. For the active regenerations the time courses of emissions and temperatures are closely connected with the chosen regeneration strategy - switching, timing and intensity (of burner, or fuel aerosol generator). A higher portion of biocomponent causes usually a stronger break-down of the instantaneous DPF filtration efficiency during the regeneration procedure - this is an effect of stronger artifact of spontaneous condensation after DPF. In summary there is no negative short term effect of bio-blended-fuels on the investigated regeneration procedures. Some recommendations for a successful long term operation, basing on other works and literature are given at the end of the paper.

Opis:
In this study the technique of Laplace transform (high resolution) deep level transient spectroscopy combined with the uniaxial stress method has been used to study a symmetry and the defect reconfiguration kinetics (the stress induced alignment) of some forms of hydrogen-related centres. We have confirmed the trigonal symmetry of the defect related to the isolated bond centred hydrogen. When hydrogen decorates the vacancy-oxygen pair (the A centre) the apparent defect orthorhombic symmetry is not lowered as a result of a very high hydrogen jumping rate between two unsaturated broken bonds of the vacancy. We also show that the stress-induced defect alignment in some cases can be related to the same microscopic mechanism of the hydrogen motion as it is for the diffusion process.

Opis:
The aim of the TOPVOYS project supported by the MarTERA ERA-Net Cofund program within the European Commission is to advance and implement analyses tools and decision support system for voyage optimisation. Based on marine weather analyses and forecasts combined with near real time satellite-based observations of wind, wave and surface current conditions as well as sea surface temperature fields the best shipping route are examined. The proposed approach aims to identify the optimum balance between minimisation of transit time and fuel consumption as well as reduction of emissions without placing the vessel at risk to damage and or crew injury. As such it is compliant with the International Maritime Organization guidelines [6] for ship routeing to keep the traffic smooth and avoid accidents, notably in the presence of unfavorable marine meteorological conditions. The tool performances will be demonstrated both in post-voyage analyses and real time operations for the North Atlantic Ocean crossings, voyages from Europe through the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Channel to the Far East (e.g. China, South Korea) and voyages around Southern Africa.
