Opis:
Purpose: Otosclerosis is a metabolic bone disease of the otic capsule that can cause the stapes fixation, resulting in conductive hearing loss or, in a profound sensorineural deafness threshold. Surgery is one of the possible treatments for the otosclerosis. To repair small focus of otosclerosis in the anterior crus of the stapes, in 1960, Hough suggested the implementation of a technique in which part of the anterior crus is fractured and the stapes turned. As a result, the posterior crus of the stapes is the only connection with the inner ear. In this work, the outcome of Hough’s surgical technique was simulated. Methods: Based on computerized images, a finite element model of middle ear ossicles and tympanic membrane was created, as well as a model where the stapes has changed. The discretization of the tridimensional solid model was made using the ABAQUS software. The mechanical properties used were taken from the literature and adequate boundary conditions were applied. Results: The results obtained with the Hough technique simulation were compared with a representative model of the normal ear, taking into account the displacements obtained on the central part of the stapes footplate and the maximum principal stress in the stapes crus. Conclusions: The results obtained are closer to the normal ear model, therefore Hough technique stands out as a good option to correct small focus of otosclerosis.

Opis:
Independent Subspace Analysis (ISA) consists in separating sets (subspaces) of dependent sources, with different sets being independent of each other. While a few algorithms have been proposed to solve this problem, they are all completely general in the sense that they do not make any assumptions on the intra-subspace dependency. In this paper, we address the ISA problem in the specific context of Separation of Synchronous Sources (SSS), i.e., we aim to solve the ISA problem when the intra-subspace dependency is known to be perfect phase synchrony between all sources in that subspace. We compare multiple algorithmic solutions for this problem, by analyzing their performance on an MEG-like dataset.

For the first time, the genus Hesperomyces has been reported to infect Coleomegilla maculata in laboratory mass rearing in Brazil. Thalli were found growing on several parts of this ladybird species, including the head, elytra, legs, and abdomen. Infested adults died after 60 days.

Opis:
The study aimed to evaluate the performance of air assistance in spray booms using different types of nozzles and spray volumes. We took into account spray deposits, fall armyworm control and crop corn performance in a narrow row cropping system. The experiment was carried out at the experimental area of Sao Paulo State University, Botucatu/SP, Brazil, during the 2008/2009 agricultural season, in randomized blocks with a factorial scheme (2×2+1) and four replications. Two spray nozzles (flat fan nozzle and hollow cone nozzle) were tested, combined with two air assistance levels in the spray boom (with and without air assistance) and a treatment control. In the experimental spraying, Spinosad insecticide was sprayed in amounts of 48 g active substance (a.s.)/ha. The air assistance in the spray boom increased the spray deposits in the V4 growth stage of the corn plants. Moreover, the application of this technology showed higher efficiency on fall armyworm control, reaching a 100% level 15 days after spraying, in the V10 growth stage of the plants. The hollow cone nozzle increased the spray deposit level on the corn plants compared with the flat fan nozzle, at growth stage V4. However, the flat fan nozzle, combined with air assistance technology, was more effective for controlling fall armyworm in the same growth stage (V4), although the hollow cone nozzle increased the deposit levels on the plants. All the technologies tested in the study promoted a reduction of plant damage from fall armyworm attack. Corn productivity is directly related to the control efficiency of fall armyworm.
