    We are now more often than ever contemplating existential problems. In this text I present some reflections related to the issue in the title. I do it in two steps. First, I consider from which perspective one can reasonably and effectively adjudicate about the meaning of an individual's life. Next, I illustrate this problem by presenting several concepts that refer to the mythological fate of Sisyphus. I precede the text with an introduction and close with an ending.

    Opis:
    Naturalism that I deal with is an approach towards the world, the man and the possibilities and methods of learning about the world. It maintains that there is an existential continuity of reality and this is a continuity of nature and not of other spheres of existence. A view formulated in this way silently accepts the assumptions of ontological realism and epistemological realism. Hence it becomes part of the ontological paradigm of philosophy. After Kant, that is after mentalistic (transcendentalistic) paradigm in philosophy came into being, the legitimacy of the ontological way of philosophising cannot be maintained. Is then naturalism – that at present experiences another revival – only a misunderstanding? Well, no. The limits of its validity – but not legitimacy – are set by science. Within its area it is obvious and useful, perhaps even indispensable. It is a type of unrealised research attitude by whose virtue a scientist treats the object of his studies as autonomously existing and one that can be objectively cognised. However, here he is supported not by theoretical arguments, but first of all by pragmatic and psychological-social ones.

    The text is a commentary on the project of core curricula in ethics, which was published by the Polish Ministry of Education in 2016 in connection with the reform of education in Poland. The authors draw attention to the shortcomings of the project: narrowing of the subject of ethics to learned norms of behaviour, excessive emphasis on conceptual knowledge instead of training students’ reflecting skills by means of discussion and problem solving. They also point to the programs’ maladjustment to the level of psycho-emotional development of students at this stage, and lack of consistency between particular assumptions of the project.
    Tekst jest komentarzem do projektu podstaw programowych nauczania etyki, opublikowanego przez MEN w 2016 roku w związku z reformą szkolnictwa. Autorzy zwracają uwagę na mankamenty projektu: zawężanie przedmiotu etyki do wyuczonych norm zachowania, nadmierny nacisk położony na przyswajanie wiedzy pojęciowej, brak miejsca na praktyczne rozwijanie zdolności refleksji poprzez dyskusje i sytuacje problemowe. Wskazują na niedostosowanie programu do psychoemocjonalnego poziomu rozwoju uczniów na tym etapie kształcenia, a także brak spójności między poszczególnymi punktami projektu.

    The text is a critical commentary on the project of the curriculum of philosophical education in secondary schools. The authors – an interdisciplinary team of school and academic teachers – analyse the goals of the project and the programmed content of teaching. The conclusion of these analyses is that the new curriculum – overloaded with encyclopedic knowledge and based on inconsistent methodology of teaching – is maladjusted to the goals of introducing philosophy as a new subject in secondary schools.
    Tekst jest komentarzem do projektu podstawy programowej nauczania filozofii w szkołach ponadpodstawowych, opracowanym przez interdyscyplinarny zespół nauczycieli szkolnych i akademickich. Autorzy analizują cele projektu oraz zakładane w nim treści kształcenia. Konkluzją tych analiz jest teza o niedostosowaniu programu kształcenia – przeciążonego wiedzą encyklopedyczną i opartego na niespójnych podstawach metodycznych – do celów związanych z wprowadzeniem filozofii jako nowego przedmiotu nauczania w szkole średniej.

    Niniejszy tekst przedstawia poglądy Konrada Lorenza odnośnie do zagrożeń, jakie stwarza dla ludzkości cywilizacja techniczna. Lorenz przyjmuje etologiczny punkt widzenia na kulturę, tzn. analizuje patologie systemu zachowań dzisiejszego człowieka. Nie jest to jednak spojrzenie tradycyjnie przyrodnicze. Etologia w wersji zaproponowanej przez Lorenza nie mieści się bowiem w Dillheyowskim podziale fakultetów na Natur- i Geisteswissenschaften. Nowatorstwo tej dyscypliny polega - jak myślę - na wykorzystaniu w badaniach szczególnego stosunku między „wrodzonym” i „nabytym” , między „naturą” i „kulturą”. Nie traktuje się tych pojęć ani jako sobie przeciwstawne, ani jako redukowalne do siebie. Teza ta ma w koncepcji Lorenza uzasadnienie metodologiczne i ontologiczne. Swoje rozważania zaczynam o prezentacji tych przesłanek. Następnie przechodzę do zarysowania etologicznej wizji człowieka. Obraz ten stanowi dla Lorenza punkt odniesienia przy ocenie aktualnej sytuacji ludzkości. Umożliwia wskazanie zakłóceń zachowań ludzkich i znalezienie ich przyczyn, jak również sugeruje, gdzie należy szukać środków zaradczych. Zagadnieniom tym poświęcam kolejne fragmenty szkicu.

    Already at the preliminary stage of the analysis the convergence of the ethical positions of the M. Lipman’s “Philosophy for Children” educational program and the views presented by Leszek Kołakowski in the essay “Ethics without Codex” is visible. The common, dominant feature of both of them is the rejection in the moral conduct of an attitude characterised by the desire to have a moral code, whereas they justify their anti-code stance in mostly the same way. The author briefly sketches these arguments and present the requirements that a moral subject who does not follow the code must fulfil. Finally, the author of the article indicates the character of moral education postulated by both authors considered here.

    Opis:
    In this text I point out a very important competence of philosophy/ ethics teachers, which is their ability to distance themselves from their own views. In practice this is being expressed by, firstly, representing pluralism inherent in philosophy and, secondly, minimizing the manifestation of the teachers’s own theoretical preferences in class. I formulate the above approach as a person declaring that the primary purpose of education is not knowledge transfer, but encouraging students to engage in independent thinking and conscious rational self-determination.
    W tekście wskazuję na bardzo istotną kompetencję nauczyciela filozofii/etyki, jaką jest umiejętność zdystansowania się w procesie dydaktycznym do własnych poglądów, co w praktyce wyraża się tym, że: po pierwsze – winien on przedstawiać pluralizm koncepcji wiążący się nieodłącznie z filozofią; po drugie – w trakcie realizowania programu winien minimalizować manifestowanie wobec uczniów/studentów swoich sympatii teoretycznych. Powyższe stanowisko formułuję z pozycji osoby uznającej za podstawowy cel edukacji nie przekaz wiedzy, lecz skłonienie ucznia do samodzielnego myślenia i świadomego oraz rozumnego stanowienia o sobie.

    We live in an era of crises. One of them, the ecological crisis, arose from the fact that the human race plunders nature, destroying, among other things, the Earth’s biodiversity. In my paper I will show that the situation is rooted in a specific worldview. Moreover, I will interrogate the question of how we can deal with the problem.  Humankind’s attitude to themselves and to the world (including nature) is based on beliefs and values which make up an unquestioned prejudgment. Individuals absorb it in the process of socialization, as they assimilate the widely understood traditions of the social groups to which they belong. In the Western tradition in particular, our understanding of humanity’s situation in the world and its relation to nature, which we have had since modernity, found its clearest articulation in the views of René Descartes (1596–1650). I will begin by discussing the main characteristics of this position most pertinent to the main problem identified in the title. Then I will discuss the consequences of Cartesianism for the worldview of modern man such as the radical rationalism and anthropocentrism inherent in the European attitude. In this tradition humanity is identified with subjectivity and intellectual cognition. Reality outside of human subjectivity, that is, the whole animate and inanimate nature, is treated as the object of knowledge. Nature should be explored in the spirit of modernity’s maxim “We can do as much as we know” (F. Bacon 1561-1626); it can be used to our purposes, to satisfy our growing needs. This is being done without scruple, precisely because nature is denied being the subject. It has no right to claim moral protection. Today, in the era of globalization, this way of thinking, which originated in the West, has spread over the entire globe and led to the ongoing devastation of nature. We are dealing with an ecological disaster. In the next step I will interrogate how this situation can be changed and what may be the role of philosophy in this cultural shift. Every vision of the world is a construct (the Cartesian vision being a very good example). What philosophy can do is offer a certain vision of reality, in which humanity has a friendly (symbiotic) attitude to nature and does not treat it merely as a means to their ends. Such ecophilosophy could be based on the thesis that subjectivity is the property not just of all human beings, but of all other beings as well. Such an idea can be found in the work of the German scientist and philosopher Jacob von Uexküll (1864-1944), who granted the status of the subject to every living being. He laid foundations to the concept of nature as “a community of subjects” comprising man and the entire animate world, thus breaking away from the Cartesian framework. I am going to outline briefly his position. Finally, I will point out what needs to be done, if people are to change their attitude to nature. A good theory in and of itself will not suffice. It is necessary to instill ecological convictions and values in entire societies, so that these values would eventually come to seem obvious. We need to launch an extensive education campaign of both adults and—perhaps even more importantly—children. In other words, the comprehensive protection of nature can only be promoted through the nexus of ecophilosophy and education.
