Opis:
A total of one hundred and twenty ducklings (i. e. 60 Muscovy and 60 Mallard) were used for the study to evaluate the breeds effect on growth performance and prediction of body weight using linear body measurements of two breeds of ducks with the aid of General Linear Model and stepwise regression procedure of SPSS. Data on individual body weight (BW), body height (BH), body length (BL) breast circumference (BC), thigh length (TL), bill length (BIL), wing length (WL)and shank length (SL) of 120 ducks were collected on Muscovy and Mallard ducks and used to predict body weight at 4 and 8 weeks. The results showed that Muscovy (56.6t ± 6.7 – 1037.5 ± 30.29g) was significantly superior (P<0.05) to Mallard (51.8 ± 1.66 – 875.44 ± 70.30g) in body weight and in all the linear body measurements from day old to week 10. Individual body weight and linear body measurements was predicted at various ages (4 and 8 weeks) by genetic groups. The values of the coefficient of determination (R2) ranged from (88.6 – 97%) and (81.8 – 90.3%) in Muscovy and Mallard respectively at week 4. While, (R2) ranged from (58.7 – 92%) and 80.1 – 86.9%) in Muscovy and Mallard respectively at week 8. Since linear body measurements that can readily predict body weight without ducks being slaughtered, it is therefore, highly desirable as it will ensure the selection of animals that will reach market weight and size at relatively faster rate. This will also serve as a tool for breeders in selecting animals destined for use as breeding stock. These Muscovy and Mallard can be improved by exploiting the principle of phenotypic plasticity to obtain strains to complement other breeds of duck. Muscovy can also be used to upgrade some other indigenous ducks for better performance in a systematic breeding program.

home management of malaria
treatment seeking behaviours
Opis:
Home management of malaria involves presumptively treating febrile children at clinic or near home with antimalarial drugs distributed by trained members of the community provide medications and educate primary caregivers about treatment of malaria and recognition of severe illness. Structured questionnaires were administered to the parents, health workers and patent medicine vendors to determine acceptability of rectal artesunate and treatment seeking behaviours. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 20 to assess association with p-value of < 0.05. Current first line antimalarial drug for treating childhood malaria at the PHCs was artesunate derivatives (90.3%) with no usage of chloroquine derivatives (0%) and common route of administration was intra-muscular (81.4%) with least usage of rectal (6.2%). Patent medicine vendors showed that the common drug derivatives purchase for treating childhood malaria was chloroquine derivatives (89.2%) with oral (91.9%) as most common route of administration and no awareness of rectal route (0%). Cases of resistance of malaria parasites to anti-malarial drugs, mostly chloroquine derivatives (89.3%) and least with artesunate derivatives (7.1%) observed by health workers. Incomplete dosage (95.6%) and fake drug (84.9%) were described as main factors responsible for malaria parasite resistance. Patent medicine vendors have come across cases of resistance of malaria parasites to anti-malarial drugs mostly chloroquine derivatives (93.2%) with drug abuse (89.2%) and fake drug (82.4%). Treatment of malaria is challenged by inadequate health-care infrastructure and community-based interventions.

Opis:
This paper described and contextualized participatory development of demand-driven curriculum for career-ready e-extension services in Nigeria as introduced by the Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education. The stages of participatory development were participatory need assessment, participatory stakeholders’ workshop and validation among 124 stakeholders selected as key informants in relation to agricultural extension training, delivery, end users and policy makers. The stakeholders were grouped as follows: community leaders and policy makers; extension agencies / organisations / institutions / employers; farmers; input suppliers / marketers / agro-based traders / other value actors; and potential candidate groups. Stakeholder meetings were held separately with different groups three times, and then a combined meeting took place. The aggregated major decisions/consensus were subjected to content analysis using ATLAS.ti. The validation process included reading of each agreed decision to all participants, then participants indicated their agreement or otherwise, which led to either rejection or acceptance of the decision. This paper concludes that participatory curriculum development has enhanced the stakeholders to identify areas of demand-driven training in response to community needs. The stakeholders preferred more online than face-to-face training. The major perceived advantages of e-extension were reduced risk, time and cost effectiveness while infrastructural and human challenges were the perceived challenges that could possibly hinder the smooth running of eextension.
