Opis:
While high production of palm oil improves the community economy, it has the potential to damage the environment because it produces the waste containing quite a lot of residual oil. The wastewater generated by this production process flows into the cooling pond before it is further processed in aerobic and anaerobic ponds. The residual oil contained in the cooling pond can be collected and used, e.g. as raw material for biodiesel production. This research aimed to produce biodiesel by utilizing the oil extracted from cooling pond wastewater through the esterification method with a sulfonated carbon catalyst and a transesterification method with the $Na_2CO_3$ catalyst. The sulfonated carbon catalyst was made from the palm kernel shells as a solid waste of the palm oil plant. In order to study the optimum amount of catalyst usage, the catalyst ratio was varied, i.e. 8–16% for the esterification process and 1–3% for the transesterification process. The reuse performance of sulfonated carbon catalysts was varied three times. On the basis of the research results, sulfonated carbon catalysts were proven to be effective as heterogeneous catalysts in the esterification process because they can reduce acid level to below 5 mg KOH/g oil. The sulfonated carbon catalyst ratio of 12% was the optimum ratio which can reduce the acid level to 4.62 mg KOH/g oil. The reuse of sulfonated carbon can reduce the acid level to 6.9 mg KOH/g oil at the first reuse. In the transesterification process, the optimum ratio of the $Na_2CO_3$ catalyst of 3% was found. The biodiesel produced has met the biodiesel characteristics of National Indonesian Standard (SNI of 7182:2015) with the saponification number of 197.18 mg KOH/g oil, free glycerol of 0.09%, FAME content of 96.79%, and density of 886 kg/$m^3$.

Opis:
The wastewater generated from pulp and paper production still contains pollutants and contaminants, so appropriate and economical materials are needed to reduce pollutants by using adsorbents from bottom ash. This study examined the characteristics of bottom ash and pulp and paper wastewater, the effect of stirring time, stirring speed, and adsorbent activation temperature on decreasing the environmental parameters of wastewater. The synthesis of bottom ash as an adsorbent was carried out by heating at 100 and 200 °C for 1 hour. The wastewater treatment process with maximum yield occurs at a stirring speed of 100 rpm for 50 min. The use of bottom ash without heating as an adsorbent in the pulp and paper wastewater treatment process has reduced TSS 77.5%, COD 85.72%, chloride 26.9%, TDS 1143 ppm, and EC 2180 s/cm, which have met the environmental quality standards.

Opis:
By breaking down harmful dye waste into harmless components under the right irradiation sources, photocatalysis is an unorthodox but promising technique that can reduce industrial wastewater pollution, particularly in the textile industry. Synthetic textile dyes called cationic dyes must be handled carefully because they are poisonous and challenging to breakdown. Photocatalytic oxidation is a useful technique for eliminating hazardous organic pigments. This investigation aims to synthesize and characterize ZnO/MnFe2O4 nanocomposites as well as investigate the effects of varying ZnO:MnFe2O4 ratios, pH levels, doses, and irradiation times on band gap reduction and photocatalytic applications tested with cationic dyes, specifically methylene blue, under the illumination of sunlight. the co-precipitation approach for the manufacture of nanocomposites with different mole ratios of ZnO:MnFe2O4 (1:0.1; 2:0.1; 3:0.1). The component comprising the nanocomposite is ZnO/MnFe2O4, according to the results of the characterisation using XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and BET. UV-DRS measurements of the band gap revealed that as ZnO was reduced, the band gap of the nanocomposite likewise decreased, from 3.35 eV to 2.78 eV. The greatest degradation of 93.2% was achieved for the degradation of 50 mg/L methylene blue (MB) dye with a catalyst dosage of 20 mg at a ratio of 1:0.2 for 50 minutes of irradiation. Since the point of zero charges (pzc) was reached at a pH of 7.8, a photodegradation adsorption-friendly solution pH of 8 was created.

Opis:
The increasing growth of the textile industry does not only provide benefits in the economic sector but also has the potential to damage the environment, because it generates the dye wastewater which is hard to eliminate. Procion red is one of the synthetic textile dyes that is toxic to the aquatic environment and it needs to be processed properly. The photocatalytic method of processing dye wastewater is the most effective, because it can remove the harmful pollutants in the dye wastewater. This study aimed to prepare and characterize the ZnO-Zeolite nanocomposites for photocatalytic applications tested with a 50 mg/L procion red dye sample. The nanocomposites consisted of the ZnO semiconductors and synthetic zeolite adsorbents prepared by using the sol-gel method. The dye degradation test was carried out under the irradiation conditions with ultraviolet (UV) lamp. Apart from the ZnO-Zeolite nanocomposite, testing was also carried out with the synthetic zeolite and ZnO. The results of SEM-EDX and XRD characterization proved that the nanocomposite forming components were ZnO and zeolite and could be seen from the resulting peaks. BET showed that the surface area value of the ZnO-Zeolite nanocomposite increased to 95.98 m2/g, the pore size of the ZnO-Zeolite nanocomposite was 4.42 nm, and the total pore volume was 0.08 cm3/g. The obtained average crystalline size of ZnO-Zeolite nanocomposite was 32.87 nm. The percentage of dye degradation using the ZnO-Zeolite nanocomposite for 120 minutes has reached 90.42%.

Opis:
Laboratory wastewater contains organic and inorganic compounds that are harmful to the environment when disposed of without prior treatment. Besides the high COD and BOD values, the laboratory wastewater also contains metals such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) which is categorized as dangerous waste material and can pollute the groundwater. Although the quantity of wastewater produced by the laboratory is relatively small, it has a real impact on the environment around the laboratory. However, the wastewater has to be treated properly before being discharged into the environment. The aim of the research was to study the laboratory wastewater treatment by using Fenton’s reagent with coagulation and adsorption pretreatment. In the pretreatment with coagulation, three types of coagulants are used, namely PAC (Poly Aluminum Chloride), ACH (Aluminum Chlorohydrate) and Aluminum Sulfate (AS) with their respective concentrations of 10–80 ppm. The highest percentage of average pollutant removal of 58.21% was found when 80 ppm of AS was applied. The pretreatment was continued by adsorption with activated carbon and zeolite adsorbents within 60–120 minutes of mixing time. It was detected that the most optimum adsorbent was activated carbon with average pollutant removal of 50.22% within 1 hour of mixing time. Processing was extended by utilized Fenton’s reagent using a variation of the molar ratio between 1:100 and 1:400. It was obtained that the best molar ratio to degrade the laboratory wastewater is 1:300 with an average removal of pollutant of 43.45%. As a result of laboratory wastewater treatment using combine Fenton’s reagent and coagulation-adsorption pretreatment, an average pollutant removal of 90.81% was obtained. The final content of COD, BOD, TSS, as well as Cu and Pb metal has met the environmental quality standard.

Opis:
Heavy metal is a type of metal that has a high density and high toxicity when consumed by living things, especially humans. To prevent the impact of environmental pollution, optimal handling of wastewater containing heavy metals is required, including the wastewater from laboratories. This research aimed to study the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and irradiation time on the reduction of Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), and Lead (Pb) heavy metals and their application to laboratory wastewater treatment. Among the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) methods, photocatalysis was chosen to reduce the level of Cu, Fe, and Pb heavy metals where zinc oxide (ZnO) is used as a photocatalyst and the sunlight as a light source. To determine the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and time on the reduction of heavy metal levels, firstly, this research used the synthetic wastewater containing Cu, Fe, or Pb heavy metals. On the basis of the experimental results, it is concluded that the pH value, catalyst dose, and time affect the photocatalytic process, decreasing the levels of Cu, Fe, and Pb metals. The optimum pH value obtained for Cu was at pH 7–8, for Fe it was at pH 6, and for Pb it was at pH 8; in turn, the metal removal percentages were 99.46, 99.91, and 99.70%, respectively. In the photocatalysis of synthetic wastewater, high removal percentage of more than 99% was achieved by using 0.1 g/L catalyst. The optimum decrease of metals occurred in the first 15 minutes of solar irradiation where the removal percentage was close to 100%. In this study, the application of ZnO photocatalyst under solar irradiation can reduce the heavy metals content in the laboratory wastewater by almost 100%, which meets the environmental quality standard for Cu, Fe, and Pb.

Biodiesel is currently preferred for consumption and has been widely used as a substitute for diesel. This study aimed to determine the effect of various methanol-to-oil ratios in the esterification process and also the effect of hydrotalcite catalyst weight on the transesterification product. The catalyst was characterized with SEM, XRD, FTIR, and TG-DTG-DTA. The esterification process was operated at various oil-to-methanol ratios, i.e., 1:12–1:36 and the transesterification was performed using several catalyst weights, 0.5%–2.5%. The results showed that the optimum conditions of esterification were at the 1:30 molar ratio of oil-to-methanol, which decreased the amount of acid number by 95.75%, while the optimum condition of transesterification was at 1.5% catalyst weight. The characteristics of biodiesel using 0.5–2% hydrotalcite catalyst (acid number, total glycerol, free glycerol, ester levels, viscosity, density, oxidation stability) have met the Indonesian biodiesel standard of SNI-04-7182-2012.
