This study was carried-out to investigate the abundance and diversity of zooplankton in River Shasha, Southwest Nigeria. The zooplankton community constitutes an important component in the faunal composition of the water body. Samples were collected bi-monthly between February 2006 to February 2008, with a mind of capturing various seasons in the period of study, at two sampling stations (Ipetumodu and Edun-abon) established along River Shasha. A total number of 54 zooplankton species were identified, comprising of five classes, namely Rotifera (29 species), Ostracoda (8 species), Arthropoda (5 species), Copepoda (5 species), Protozoa (4 species) and Cladocera (3 species). The most abundant species were Brachionus, Lecane and Keratella recorded the highest distribution among the zooplankton observed during the sampling period. Among the Rotifers, Branchions patulus and Filina opoliensis were found abundant. Holopedium amazonicum and Scapholebris armata were predominant among the Cladoceras. Among the Copepods the dominant species was Ectocyclops phaleratus and Hemicypris ovate and Cypris subglobosa among Ostracoda. Among the Protozoa, Diffugia sp and Vorticella sp were observed. Ceratopogonid sp. was most dominant among Arthropoda. The density of zooplankton population was maximum during dry season (158702 Org/L) and minimum (12402 Org/L) during rainy season due to the different environmental conditions of the water bodies. The overall mean abundance of zooplankton population was in the following order: Rotifera > Protozoan > Arthropoda > Copepoda > Cladocera >Ostracoda. The few species of Zooplankton identified in River Shasha may reflect the moderate level of limit nutrient and there is need for regular monitoring of the waterbody to avoid the excess input of nutrients from domestic and agricultural waste that could lead to eutrophication.

In recent years, the several causative factors of tree decline have caught our attention in the over 40-year-old University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT). Identical tree species decline and causing factors increasingly became persistently epidemic on environmental trees across Niger Delta. Despite the global growing demands on tree landscape systems and new concepts of biosecurity needs, which today expect greater responsibility from different societal groups to align these demands with operational utilization of suitable trees hopefully native species, Nigeria still hugely rely on exotic species for its landscape systems. While a plethora of articles have been aired and documented on Niger Delta contemporary issues in local and international debate convergences, the Oil Exploration and Human Developmental Projects (OEHDPs) effects dominate. This study provided utilization based information on Stress-Pests Infestations (SPIs) factors and challenges related to alien ornamental trees in Niger Delta where anaerobic soil condition perennially exists. Soil moisture stress has been recognized as formidable major threat to the safety of exotic (alien or non native species) trees and predisposing susceptible ornamental tree species to fungi invasions and subsequent infestation of living trees by termites, beetles and of recent weaver birds. To reduce the SPIs effectively, and improve human inhabitations, this study stresses the urgent policy need for a paradigm shift from landscape design utilizing alien tree species to the massive use of indigenous trees species native to Niger Delta region.

Obeche (Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum.) is a large tropical tree, the wood products of which are either in solid or reconstituted forms. These items are extremely vulnerable to concomitant insect attack. Although established as a successful plantation species for veneering and plywood production, Obeche is also considered as a good environmental tree in Nigeria. However, there is very little specific information that substantiates this potential. We report on the organisms inducing biodeterioration of Obeche wood products and describe the characteristics of Obeche trees in terms of environmental suitability between 2012 and 2016. All the 47 Obeche wood-based products (OWBPs) studied, comprising 12 beehives, 10 food canteen stalls, 10 office tables, 10 laboratory cabinets and 5 office walls were economically and dominantly co-infested by beetles and termites. Interestingly, during the four-year observation period, all the eight Obeche trees encountered were found to exhibit high stability with excellent resistance to hollowness and to degradative pests, even at around 2 m Diameter at Breast Height (DBH). This reflects its robust biophysical protective barrier mechanisms. Additionally, there were observations of enhanced coexistence with other tree species, including shrubs and grasses. This indicates a tolerance potential role at improving the relative contributions of several species (plants community) to ameliorate tropical environmental degradation.

Continuous monitoring of the size of wildlife population is a basic requirement for proper wildlife management. Therefore, this study assesses the conservation status of Roan antelope in Old Oyo National Park. A reconnaissance survey was carried out to the park to determine the areas of concentration of Roan antelope. The study was carried out for four months (March-June, 2018) using line transect method and direct sighting. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that the highest population of 34 individuals of roan antelope was recorded in the month of March, while the least population of the roan antelope was 8 in the month of July. Marguba range has the highest percentage of 28.2%, followed by Oyo-Ile with the population of 27%, while Sepeteri and Tede has the population of 22.4% respectively. The population structure of Roan indicates that the female roan antelope had the highest population of 35, followed by the young ones with the population of 27, while the male has the least number of observation of 23. The vegetation distribution revealed that Riparian forest vegetation zone has the highest number of individual with 24 observation, follow by Isoberlina doka (23) while Diospyrus mespillisformis and Afzelia africana recorded 19 respectively. The population of roan antelope could then build up to sustain the effective breeding population size. Uncontrolled burning activities by poachers and variations in seasons changed the habitat of Roan Antelope and this has threatened most of the plant species that provide shelter and food for the animals. It was therefore recommended that the vegetation types should be protected from adverse late burning by poachers as this is necessary for saving the vegetation for dry season feeding of roan antelope.
