Opis:: The turning point of Icelandic history was the reception of Christianity. After the discovery of the island, and then its settlement and the organization of an independent state, this was another step in the unification of the Icelandic nation. The circumstances of Iceland's acceptance of Christianity are peculiar in comparison with other countries in Europe at that time. While the decision to accept a new religion was usually made by the ruler, in Iceland the introduction of Christianity took place by the decision of the pagan parliament. Opposition to each other, the pagan and Christian factions, through reasonable negotiations, agreed in a bloodless manner on political agreement in this matter. The national assembly – Althingi – made a resolution in the summer of 1000 establishing a Christianity valid for the whole country religion. It is worth noting that pagan priest and clan leader Thorgeir Thorlaksson, played a crucial role here. Iceland was thus a country that was an exception to the European countries, which accepted a new faith through the conscious and voluntary decision of its inhabitants.

Opis:: During his pilgrimages to his homeland, John Paul II was teaching his countrymen about the problems specifi c to the Church in Poland, but also to the whole Church. One of these themes was the missions ad gentes. The Pope noticed and pointed out on the example of the history of his nation that missions built Polish statehood and shaped Polish culture. He called for this process to be recognized in the history of Europe as a whole and to recognize in evangelization the factor that builds and defi nes its true identity. He showed that missions help imbue human culture with a supernatural element. He recalled the truth about the missionary nature of the Church and the missionary vocation of all its members. Responsibility and cooperation in the missionary work was for John Paul II one of the forms of the “imagination of mercy.” Appealing to his countrymen for missionary generosity and commitment, he also pointed to the fi gures who were involved in the animation of the missionary work in the Polish and universal Church. In his teaching in Poland, he recalled the missionary task of the Church community and of each and every faithful.

Ta ostania jest o tyle interesująca i wartościowa, że pochodzi od wychowanka francuskiej misji w Gwinei, który stał się jednym z odpowiedzialnych za dzieło misyjne całego Kościoła powszechnego. Wskazuje na dobroczynne oddziaływanie misjonarzy dla historii jego kraju i ludu. Podkreśla konieczność nadprzyrodzonego rozumienia natury misji ad gentes, jej dynamizm i owocność wyrosłe na gruncie modlitwy. Kreśli duchową sylwetkę misjonarza. Z nadzieją ukazuje szansę na odnowę Kościoła i ratunek dla całej cywilizacji w misyjnej naturze Kościoła. Wskazuje na konkretne obszary, które mogą być zaczynem odnowy Kościoła i kultury zachodniej. Uważna lektura dzieł kard. Saraha pozwala odkryć ciągłą wymianę darów między Kościołami, wskazuje jednak na zmianę kierunków tej wymiany. Analiza myśli kardynała z Afryki potwierdza naukę o misyjnej naturze Kościoła a jednocześnie wewnętrzne zmiany, jakie w niej się dokonują.
Cardinal Robert Sarah is one of the most recognizable Catholic hierarchs today. In his publications and speeches, he boldly paints the image of the contemporary Church, not afraid to talk about its crisis. Among his reflections we can also find missionary topics. The latter is interesting and valuable in that it comes from a pupil of the French mission in Guinea, who became one of those responsible for the missionary work of the entire universal Church. The African Cardinal tells his readers about his childhood spent in communion with missionaries. He points to the beneficial influence of missionaries on the history of his country and people. He emphasizes the necessity of a supernatural understanding of the nature of the mission ad gentes, its dynamism and fruitfulness, which stem from prayer. Outlines the spiritual profile of the missionary. He shows with hope an opportunity for the renewal of the Church and salvation for the whole civilization in the missionary nature of the Church, which implies an exchange of gifts between local Churches. He points to specific areas that can be a leaven of renewal of the Church and Western culture. He is also not afraid to boldly and critically touch the issues of inculturation. Cardinal Sarah proves that even when experiencing a local crisis, in its universal dimension the Church is still in a state of mission.

Opis:: The analysis carried out in the article indicates the truths about the Church contained in Benedict XVI’s encyclicals, which at the same time constitute specific inspirations for the missionary work of the Church ad gentes. The Pope does not distinguish between generally separate „missionary situations” and speaks rather of a single, fundamental, inalienable mission that still stands before the Church. Sometimes, however, he evokes the activity of the Church in mission areas. He reminds and points out that the Church’s ever-present task, including the mission ad gentes, is to remind and proclaim to the contemporary world the truth about God who is love. Missionary activity is also supposed to restore hope to modern man that goes beyond the temporal order. Finally, the Church’s mission, especially in the framework of her mission ad gentes, is to care for the true progress and development of every person and of the whole human society in truth and love. The missionary activity of the community Christ’s disciples remains a special area of such presence and witness of the Church in a world which is constantly globalizing.

Opis:: W sierpniu 2022 r. minęło 45 lat od rozpoczęcia przez siostry z jednego z tzw. zgromadzeń honorackich – Sióstr Służek Najświętszej Maryi Panny Niepokalanej – pracy misyjnej w Afryce. Artykuł prezentuje, uwzględniając specyfikę tego zgromadzenia, jego zaangażowanie w dzieło misji ad gentes. Założyciel zgromadzenia posyłał siostry do najbardziej potrzebujących. Obecnie pojmują one swoją misję jako misję na peryferiach świata, zrozumiały i odczytały znaki czasu oraz odważnie podążają na „obrzeża” dzisiejszego Kościoła, niosąc „radość Ewangelii”. Chociaż zgromadzenie sióstr honoratek, Służek Najświętszej Maryi Panny Niepokalanej, nie powstało specjalnie z myślą o misji ad gentes, to po stu latach od swego powstania podjęło tę formę pracy. Poszerzenie postrzegania i realizacji charyzmatu zgromadzenia wpisuje się w aktualne nauczanie Magisterium Kościoła o zaangażowaniu zgromadzeń zakonnych w dzieło ewangelizacji. Rodzime powołania do tego zgromadzenia, a nawet przejmowanie placówek misyjnych (misja w Butare) przez „siostry Afrykanki” potwierdzają prawdę, że misje to nie tylko dawanie, ale i wymiana darów.
August 2022 marked 45 years of the missionary work in Africa undertaken by one of the so-called Honorat’s congregations, the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Taking into account the uniqueness of this assembly, the article demonstrates its commitment to the work of the mission ad gentes. The congregation’s founder assigned the sisters to the most needy. Today the sisters recognize their vocation as a mission to the periphery of the world and having understood and read the signs of the times, they courageously go to the periphery of today’s Church, bringing “the joy of the Gospel” to the poorest of the poor. Although Honorat’s congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was not founded with the intention of doing mission ad gentes, it nevertheless engaged in this form of work one hundred years later. The current teaching of the Church’s Magisterium on the engagement of religious congregations in the work of evangelization includes widening of the perception and implementation of the congregation’s charism. The local vocations of this Congregation as well as the African Sisters taking over missionary offices (mission in Butare), confirm the truth that missions are not merely about giving but also about exchanging gifts.

Opis:: The missionary action in Iceland did not end with the reception of Christianity by Althing in the year 1000. Further eﬀ orts of the missionaries and their cooperation with Icelandic society were necessary to consolidate the adopted faith. The missionaries from Germany and England ﬁ rst had a huge share here. Then, the native bishops and clergy took over this role successfully. The political and social stabilization of this period allowed Christianity to take root in the society of the Icelandic time of the independent Icelandic Community. This was conﬁ rmed by the rise and development of monastic life, the development of Icelandic culture and education. The ﬁ rst period of Christianity in Iceland allowed for laying solid foundations on which, even after the loss of sovereignty, Icelanders could preserve their cultural identity and national heritage.

Opis:: Wydawane przez polskich jezuitów czasopismo „Misje Katolickie” było na przełomie XIX i XX wieku jednym z ważniejszych periodyków misyjnych dostarczających informacji na temat dzieła misyjnego Kościoła. Publikowane artykuły przybliżały również postępy pracy misyjnej na Islandii. Kraj ten leżący w strefie dominacji wspólnot chrześcijańskich powstałych w wyniku reformacji był na przełomie XIX i XX wieku terenem misyjnym. Na przestrzeni 50 lat pojawiło się na łamach jezuickiego czasopisma blisko 20 różnej długości tekstów mówiących o historii chrześcijaństwa w tym kraju. Na ich podstawie można bardzo skrótowo przedstawić historię Kościoła katolickiego na Islandii. Nie jest to wyczerpujący i usystematyzowany wykład, ale raczej dostarczenie ówczesnemu polskiemu czytelnikowi podstawowych informacji o najważniejszych jej wydarzeniach i postaciach. Artykuł stanowi także prezentację tekstów mogących stanowić pomoc dla zajmujących się obecnie tym tematem. Lektura tych publikacji może zainspirować do dalszych poszukiwań i opracowań służących przybliżeniu historii Kościoła katolickiego w tym kraju.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the journal “Catholic Missions” published by the Jesuits was one of the key missionary periods providing information on the missionary tasks of the Church. The published articles also presented the progress of the mission work on Iceland. Over 50 years of history, nearly 20 different origins of texts about history of Christianity in Iceland was published. On them you can very briefly have a situation of Catholicism in Iceland. It is not a comprehensive and structured lectur, but rather a basic information for the polish reader about the most important events and people. Reading and referring to these publications may encourage further reserch and study of the history of the Catholic Church in Iceland.

Opis:: Mówiąc o animacji misyjnej w Kościele polskim po Soborze Watykańskim II nie sposób pominąć osoby płockiego biskupa pomocniczego Jana Wosińskiego (1914–1996). Słusznie można uznać go za niezmordowanego promotora i organizatora animacji misyjnej w Polsce. Przez ponad 20 lat kształtował on bowiem misyjne oblicze polskiego duszpasterstwa. Od początku istnienia Komisji Misyjnej w polskim episkopacie (1967) był jej członkiem, a od 1972 do 1984 r. przewodniczącym. Od 1963 r. organizował także prace Papieskiej Unii Misyjnej, a następnie od 1970 do 1985 r. wszystkich Papieskich Dzieł Misyjnych w Polsce. Od 1967 r. był także odpowiedzialny za duszpasterstwo misyjne w diecezji płockiej, gdzie dbał o misyjną formację kleryków oraz mobilizował duchowieństwo do zaangażowania w misyjne dzieło Kościoła na szczeblu parafialnym i wspólnotowym. Przez przeszło 20 lat włączał Kościół polski i diecezjalny w działalność misyjną Kościoła powszechnego. Oprócz wysiłków animacyjnych i organizacyjnych pozostawił także, w nielicznych niestety tekstach, swoje rozumienie misyjności Kościoła.
Speaking of the missionary animation in the Polish Church after the Second Vatican Council, it is impossible to omit the person of the Auxiliary Bishop of Płock, Jan Wosiński (1914–1996). He can rightly be considered a tireless promoter and organizer of missionary animation in Poland. For over 20 years he has been shaping the missionary face of the Polish pastoral ministry. From the beginning of the Missionary Commission in the Polish Episcopate (1967), he was a member, and from 1972 to 1984 its chairman. From 1963 he also organized the work of the Pontifical Missionary Union, and then from 1970 to 1985 all the Pontifical Missionary Works in Poland. Since 1967. he was also responsible for missionary ministry in the Diocese of Płock, where he cared for the missionary formation of seminarians and mobilized the clergy to engage in the missionary work of the Church at parish and community levels. For more than 20 years he involved the Polish and diocesan Church in the missionary activity of the universal Church. In addition to his animation and organizational efforts, he also left his understanding of the missionary nature of the Church, unfortunately in very few texts.
