Opis:
Linear dichroism, dichroic ratio, contrast ratio and order parameters of Sudan III/PMMA guest-host thin films have been investigated with visible polarized laser light. Dichroism increased in an exponential fashion with increase of the pump intensity. Light-induced dichroism and polar order of the dye molecules within the polymer network were reversible. These parameters showed fast increase in their values in an exponential fashion as the pumping process takes place. Also, they decay rapidly in an exponential fashion when the pump light is cut off. Photoisomerisation and polar orientation are dependent on both the molecular structure of the dye and polymer. Two forms of Sudan III molecules (trans and cis) are responsible for the interaction with laser light and forming an anisotropic structure inside the PMMA/Sudan III films. However, there is another set of forms of the dye (keto and enol) has to be considered, which may contribute to dichroism.

Opis:
A new experimental and theoretical method has been presented for measuring the refractive index of liquids and transparent solids. The experimental setup is based on a modified version of the Michelson interferometer employing a rotation stage. This technique allows us the determination of the refractive index of a given liquid (or a transparent sample) accurately to high precision, with an accuracy limited only by the precision in the determination of the rotation angle.

We investigate the dichroism characteristics of poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA thin films doped with DO11, DO3, DSR13 and DSR1 dye molecules, which change under illumination with visible light. Our data show that photoisomerisation, phototautomerization reactions and light-induced polar orientation are dependent on the molecular structure of the polymer. Polar structure and molecular size, as well as the chemical structure of PMMA host, are the dominant parameters that determine both the extent and speed of dichroism buildup and relaxation processes. Two forms of DO11 molecules (keto and enol forms), and two other forms of azo-based dyes ( trans and cis forms) are responsible for the interaction with irradiating laser light and forming an anisotropic structure inside the PMMA/dye thin films.

We investigate the absorption spectra of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films doped with Disperse Orange 11 (DO11) dye molecules which change under illumination with visible light. Dichroism measurements of the kinetics of the transmission changes at 472 nm at room and low temperatures (-60° C ± 2 °C) have been investigated. Our data show that the photoisomerisation reaction and the light-induced polar orientation depend on the molecular structure of the polymer. Simultaneous UV-visible spectroscopy at low temperature confirms the existence of two forms of DO11 molecules (keto and enol forms), which are responsible for the interaction with irradiating laser light and forming an anisotropic structure inside the PMMA/DO11 thin film.

Water pollution has increased due to human activities; consequently, it is essential to treat both surface water and ground water so they are suitable to meet the needs of the population. This study will discuss water treatment intended to remove antimony. Antimony (Sb) is classed as a high-priority toxic pollutant because of its adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. There are several methods for removing antimony from water, including adsorption, coagulation, ion exchange, and electrochemical treatment. This study focuses on the adsorption method as researchers have, in recent times, been seeking adsorbents that are environmentally friendly and cost-effective and that do not leave a residue. The study investigates the use of orange peels treated with acetic acid as an adsorbent to remove antimony ions from a simulated aqueous solution. The results revealed that 5 g of treated orange peels is 98.5% effective at treating water at a pH of 6, for a contact time of 150 minutes, at a mixing speed of 450 rpm.

In this work, six molecules model are optimized at B3LYP/6-31G** density functional theory. Electronic properties of iso-indene molecules were investigated depending on the three parameters (B3LYP) by density functional theory method. The best geometry for all molecules were investigated at (6-31G**) basis sets. The total energies, energy gaps, ionization potentials, electron affinities and softness were calculated for the studied molecules. Adding the (OH) ion and Nitrogen, Sulfur atoms to the iso-indene molecules leads to decrease the energy gap and the hardness of the studied molecules. The IR-spectra shows the effect of adding the (OH) ion and Nitrogen, Sulfur atoms in the ring on the vibrations of the reference molecule, the electronic properties and IR spectrum for all molecules were investigated by Gaussian 03 program.

The β-phase Titanium (β-Ti) alloys have been under the spotlight in the recent past for their use as biomedical prosthetic materials owing to their excellent properties such as low elastic modulus, high corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Recently, Niobium (Nb) has gained a lot of attention as a β-phase stabilizing element in Ti alloys to replace Vanadium (V) due to its excellent solubility in Ti, low elastic modulus and biocompatibility. In this work, low cost Ti-20Nb binary alloy has been fabricated via powder metallurgy procedures. The blended powder mixtures of Ti and Nb were sintered at 900°C for 20 mins by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) with an applied uniaxial pressure of 40 MPa. The heating rate was fixed at 50°C/min. The sintered alloy was subject to heat treatments at 1200°C in vacuum condition for various time durations. The characterizations of microstructure obtained during this process were done using FE-SEM, EDS and XRD. By increasing heat treatment time, as understood, the volume of residual Nb particles was decreased resulting in accelerated diffusion of Nb into Ti. Micro hardness of the alloy increased from 340 to 355 HV with the increase in β phase content from 30 to 45%. The resultant alloys had relatively high densities and homogenized microstructures of dispersed lamellar β grains in α matrix.
