Candida auris is a major public health concern due to its high transmission and mortality rates, as well as the emergence of pan-resistant strains. This study aimed to identify an antifungal compound from Sarcochlamys pulcherrima , an ethnomedicinal plant, that can inhibit the growth of C. auris. Methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of the plant were obtained, and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis was conducted to identify the major compounds in the extracts. The major compound detected by HPTLC was subjected to in vitro antifungal activity testing, and its antifungal mechanism was determined. The plant extracts inhibited the growth of both C. auris and Candida albicans. HPTLC analysis revealed the presence of gallic acid in the leaf extract. Furthermore, the in vitro antifungal assay showed that gallic acid inhibited the growth of different C. auris strains. In silico studies indicated that gallic acid can bind to the active sites of carbonic anhydrase (CA) proteins in both C. auris and C. albicans, affecting their catalytic activities. Compounds that target virulent proteins such as CA can aid in the reduction of drug-resistant fungi and the development of novel antifungal compounds with unique modes of action. However, additional in vivo and clinical studies are required to conclusively determine gallic acid’s antifungal properties. Gallic acid derivatives may be developed in the future to possess more potent antifungal properties and target various pathogenic fungi.

Enhancing rural agricultural productivity using proven technologies such as genetically modified (GM) maize production has many advantages as a pathway to economic development and poverty reduction. However, despite the global rise in GM maize and potential benefits of GM technology, the production rates and yields of smallholder farmers remain very low for reasons that are poorly understood. With this background, the aim of this study was to investigate the drivers of genetically modified (GM) maize awareness, participation, and intensity of production at the household level. Data were collected from 400 randomly selected respondents from Ngqushwa Local Municipality using a semi-structured questionnaire. Through a triple hurdle model, the study revealed that GM maize awareness is negatively influenced by age and female gender and positively influenced by married status, employment and number of years in school. Conditional on awareness of GM maize varieties, both participation and intensity of participation in GM maize production are positively influenced by land size, female gender, group membership, income and ownership of arable land and negatively influenced by employment. The study recommends that priority should be given to these socio-economic and institutional (group membership) factors by targeting GM maize awareness campaigns using platforms more suited to female-headed, older, less educated and unemployed rural farming households. The study also recommends addressing income, secure land ownership and access to large areas of land.

African indigenous chickens (IC) though commonly kept by households in rural areas for consumption and sale, their contribution to rural livelihoods is generally overlooked. Literature suggests that IC production plays a vital role in rural communities of South Africa as an important source of animal protein and income. Despite these claimed benefits, production of indigenous chickens in Alice and other parts of South Africa’s rural areas is very low. This study used a cross-sectional survey of 120 households who keep IC in Alice communal area. The multivariate probit model was employed to investigate the factors that determine the choice of indigenous chicken owned by rural households. Results reveal that, gender, age, household size, association membership, access to formal markets, access to veterinary services, access to informal credit, access to formal credit and diversity score drive ownership of different indigenous chickens at household level. Thus far, the paper argues that, promotion of ownership of indigenous chicken at household level calls for strategic institutional alignment and a clear understanding of social demographic characteristics of the targeted community, which should be supported by several awareness campaigns and client based selection of indigenous chicken breeds of socio-economic importance to the household.

Literature suggests that there are high levels of commercialisation by even the poorest and smallest landholders within the horticulture subsector in most rural Africa. Thus, the notion of poor commercialisation among smallholder farmers is now being challenged. Against this background,this paper estimated factors that influence commercialisation by smallholder cabbage farmers in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study used a cross-sectional survey of120 smallholder cabbage farmers obtained through a multistage sampling procedure. A Cragg double-hurdle model was applied to analyse the factors that influence the commercialisation decision and intensity of commercialisation. In the first stage, the result of the probit regression model revealed that gender, age, access to informal credit and area planted were significant factors towards influencing smallholder cabbage farmers’ commercialisation decisions. In the second stage, the results of the truncated regression model revealed that family size and area planted were the key factors determining the intensity of commercialisation. Hence, the attempts to improve smallholder farmers’ cabbage commercialisation should be guided by these significant explanatory variables in the study area, given the low commercialisation index revealed.

This article presents a brief overview of historical methods of legal proof prior to and soon after the Norman Conquest of England in October 1066. Through an examination of the rituals of compurgation and the ordeal, which were techniques designed to discover truth prior to the establishment of the inquisition in medieval Europe and the common law jury trial in England, the human quest for intellectual conviction has been indelibly with us since the days of antiquity. And, whichever method to ascertain truth is ultimately utilized – compurgation or ordeal, inquisition or cross-examination, trial by judge or by jury – the law’s enduring search for certainty amidst a world of doubt owes much to the history and times of William the Conqueror.

The purpose of this paper was to identify the factors influencing households to diversify rural on-farm livelihood activities in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. This is against a background where literature suggests low livelihoods diversification among rural households despite several claimed benefits of diversification. Cross-sectional survey data was randomly collected for this study in October 2018 from 190 rural households in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. A structured questionnaire was used for that purpose. Ordered logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that diversification of on-farm livelihood activities was influenced by the gender of household head, education level of household head, household size, and number of livestock units owned. To promote on-farm livelihoods diversification in rural areas, the paper suggests targeting gender differential, informal education and awareness, labor dynamics associated with on-farm livelihood activities and household livestock units.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising option for the environmentally friendly recycling of agricultural by-products. However, overloading of the digester with sugar, starch or protein might cause inhibition of the anaerobic processes. The aim of the present project was to investigate the influence of sugar beet by products on biogas yield from a typical mixture of energy crops and animal manure. The investigated substrates have been: cattle slurry, maize, sorghum and grass silage, sugar beet pulp e (SBP) and sugar beet tail silage (SBT). The difference between untreated SBT to processed SBP. All substrates were digested in 1 l eudiometer-batch digesters at 37.5 during 28 to 38 days. The specific methane yield of mixtures and various substrates exanimated. The experiments showed that edition of sugar beet by product to energy crop and slurry mixture results in high methane yield even the achieved methane yield of the mixture was lower the expected.
