Opis:
The problem considered in the paper can be described as follows. We are given a continuous mapping from one metric space into another which is regular (in the sense of metric regularity or, equivalently, controllability at a linear rate) near a certain point. How small may be an additive perturbation of the mapping which destroys regularity? The paper contains a new proof of a recent theorem of Dontchev-Lewis-Rockafellar for linear perturbations of maps between finite-dimensional Banach spaces and an exact estimate for Lipschitz perturbations of maps between complete metric spaces.

Opis:
Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG) uses abstract syntactic representations (f-structures) that tend to provide less hierarchical structure for certain constructions than those employed in other formal frameworks. This produces some good results, such as a very straightforward account of feature-sharing between phrases and their heads, but also certain difficulties, especially in cases where the semantic interpretation seems to be determined by the hierarchical c-structure Rather than the flatter f-structure. These are unproblematic for all other major generative frameworks, but have been troublesome for standard versions of LFG. Here I will consider two such cases: scoping adjectival modification in noun phrases; and Romance ‘complex’ (or ‘restructuring’) predicates. Problems with the semantic interpretation of these construction were first discussed by Andrews (1983) and Alsina (1997), respectively, and by others subsequently. Both constructions exhibit the problem of apparent concentricity, and a fully satisfactory and accepted LFG solution has not yet been found. My proposal is to use the hybrid objects and distribution convention of Dalrymple and Kaplan (2000), but with singleton rather than multi-member sets, along with a facility to stipulatively suppress distribution in individual constructions. This provides an analysis which explains scope-determination and helps with certain other problems, with far less change to the theory than in previous attempts such as Andrews and Manning (1993, 1999).

Opis:
A fixed-point algorithm is presented for a class of singly constrained nonlinear programming (NLP) problems with bounds. Setting the gradient of the Lagrangian equal to zero yields a set of optimality conditions. However, a direct solution on general problems may yield non-KKT points. Under the assumption that the gradient of the objective function is negative while the gradient of the constraint function is positive, and that the variables are positive, it is shown that the fixed-point iterations can converge to a KKT point. An active set strategy is used to handle lower and upper bounds. While fixed-point iteration algorithms can be found in the structural optimization literature, these are presented without clearly stating assumptions under which convergence may be achieved. They are also problem specific as opposed to working with general functions f, g. Here, the algorithm targets general functions which satisfy the stated assumptions. Further, within this general context, the fixed-point variable update formula is given physical significance. Unlike NLP descent methods, no line search is involved to determine step size which involves many function calls or simulations. Thus, the resulting algorithm is vastly superior for the subclass of problems considered. Moreover, the number of function evaluations remains independent of the number of variables allowing the efficient solution of problems with a large number of variables. Applications and numerical examples are presented.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the time-dependent effectiveness of photo-stimulation against bovine sperm cells using a multi-wavelength LED (Light Emitting Diode). Spermatological parameters were evaluated for viability, acrosome structure and motility. In addition, the effect of photo-stimulation on frozen-thawed sperm cells subjected to in vitro capacitation was evaluated in terms of changes in mitochondrial membrane potential. The study consisted of two separate experiments and a total of 32 sperm samples obtained from separate bulls were used. All sperm samples were obtained from Holstein bulls using an artificial vagina. Semen was diluted to a final concentration of 92 x 106 spermatozoa per ml in 0.25 ml straws. The sperm cells were frozen using the conventional method. Straws were kept in a 37°C water bath for 20 seconds and diluted 1:4 in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) to eliminate the potentially deleterious effect of glycerol, the main permeable cryoprotectant in the freezing medium for bull sperm. This dilution also helped in the evaluation of sperm quality parameters. In the first experiment, whereas the 15-10-15 showed no differences with the control, other treatments such as 10-10-10, 5-5-5, and 3-1-3 exhibited significantly higher percentages of viable spermatozoa at 24h. The results obtained for acrosome integrity were pretty much similar to those observed in the sperm viability assessment. In effect, while the treatment consisting of 15-10-15 had no positive effects, shorter treatments exerted a much more positive effect. The percentages of acrosome-intact spermatozoa in 2-1-2 and 1-1-1 were significantly higher than those obtained in the control. The significant differences in mitochondrial membrane potential were observed at 0, 2, 4 and 24h post-photo-stimulation in all treatments, except 15-10-15. The highest increase in the percentage of spermatozoa exhibiting high mitochondrial membrane potential was found in 10-10-10, 5-5-5 and 3-1-3 treatments. With regard to total and progressive motility, whereas 10-10-10 was the best regime, 5-5-5 and 3-1-3 treatments also had a positive effect. However, 15-10-15 appeared to have a stimulating effect upon progressive motility at 2h and 4h but later declined and showed no significant differences with regard to the control at 24h. In the second experiment, not immediately after thawing but after having been kept at room temperature for up to 24h, it was observed that there was no statistical difference in terms of viability, acrosome integrity and total/progressive motility between photostimulation and the control group. This indicates that photo- stimulation is less able to exert a beneficial effect when post-thawed sperm are not immediately stimulated. As a result it was determined that photo-stimulation at a pattern of 10-10-10, 5-5-5, 3-1-3 and, to a lesser extent 2-1-2, increases the resilience of frozen-thawed bull sperm when applied upon thawing.

Opis:
This document describes the lessons learned from a United States Navy enterprise integration initiative called Web Enabled Navy (WEN). WEN was initiated in April 2001 with the foci of integrating navy resources and providing a single-point-of-access, Web environment to all business and operational applications. The navy's applications operate within a complex network environment that spans commands afoat, ashore, and overseas. The challenges addressed are similar to those faced by large, multi-national corporations and include some unusual characteristics including islands of intermittently, bandwidth-limited, connected information consumers. Both technical and management lessons learned will be described and denoted as either prerequisite or success factors.
