Opis:
We study the compaction dynamics of frictional hard disks in two dimensions, subjected to vertical shaking, by numerical simulation. Shaking is modeled by a series of vertical expansions of the disk packing, followed by dynamical recompression of the assembly under the action of gravity. The second phase of the shake cycle is based on an efficient event-driven molecular-dynamics algorithm. We analyze the compaction dynamics for various values of the friction coefficient and the coefficient of normal restitution. The granular organization at local level was studied by analyzing the shape factor ξ of the local volumes, associated with a natural way of subdividing the volume into local parts - the Voronoi partition. It gives a clear physical picture of the competition between less and more ordered domains of particles during the compaction. We calculate the distribution of the shape-factor for packings at different stages of the compaction process. We have also investigated a two-dimensional granular medium experimentally. We prepared the granular packings of metallic cylinders of diameters 4, 5, and 6 mm. The distributions of the shape-factor obtained numerically for various tapping intensities are consistent with our experimental results.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to determine the predictive power of parenting styles in predicting subjective well-being and self-efficacy as aspects of adolescent mental health. The sample consisted of 270 students from four high schools in Serbia, aged 16 and 17. The research was conducted during March and April 2021, and research methods that were used are descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and regression analysis. The authoritative parental educational style contributes to the development of adolescents’ experience of self-efficacy and subjective well-being. Authoritative parents - through high warmth and control - provide the child with an optimal environment for development.

Opis:
The results of research into leaf stomatal variability of five European beech provenances originating from Austria, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Germany, Romania and Serbia are presented in this paper. Aim of the study was to investigate how stomatal traits of provenances originating from different environments change in response to drought stress and to assess the phenotypic plasticity of the stomatal features investigated. The study was conducted during two different years, characterized by contrasting weather conditions (2010 and 2011). Two-way ANOVA revealed that provenances differ significantly in terms of stomatal density (SD), width of stomatal aperture (Wb), potential conductance index (PCI) and relative stomatal pore surface (RSPS), during both seasons. In a dry year (2011) all provenances significantly increased stomatal density by between 16.1% (Hasbruch – DE) and 21.9% (Cer – SRB). Guard cell length (LA) was not statistically different among provenances in either year (2010 and 2011), even though LA decreased in the dry year (2011) in all provenances. Reaction norms were steep in most of the parameters suggesting the possibility of a plastic response of provenances toward changes in soil water regime, influenced by the prevailing weather each year. Phenotypic plasticity indices were the highest in regards of SD, PCI and RSPS, indicating that these traits would be good candidates for improvement in breeding programs aimed at selection of drought resistant.

Opis:
The problem considered in this paper is of the cracked thin-walled beams. They are subjected to combined loading by the bending moment and the axial force. The profiles with the I (H), T and U cross-sections were analyzed. The analytical method is based on application of classical expressions for Mode I SIF of such beams with taking into account the cross sections' warping. The classical expressions for SIF for the thin plate are adapted by including the reduced forces and moments characteristic for the thin-walled beams. The numerical simulation for calculating the stress intensity factor of the cracked thin-walled beams consisted of application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) by use of the J-EDI method. It is found that the Mode I SIF of cracked thin-walled beams increases with crack length increase. The conducted comparison of results obtained by application of the two methods confirms the validity of the proposed analytical expressions only for the small crack lengths.

Opis:
There is growing interest in the activity of sulfur-containing compounds on redox balance in physiological and pathological conditions, considering that some of these compounds have not only antioxidative but also pro-oxidative activities. Aim of this study was to assess possible differences in the effects of various sulfur-containing compounds on redox balance of cardiovascular system in its physiological state and in the early onset of hyperhomocysteinemia. This experimental study divided Wistar albino rats into two groups: saline-treated (control) and DL-homocysteine-treated (experimental group). Rats from experimental group were subjected to subchronic subcutaneous administration of DL-homocysteine at dose of 0.45 μmol/g body weight twice a day for 2 weeks. At the end of this period, rats were sacrificed, and blood samples were collected to be analysed for homocysteine concentration and systemic oxidative stress. Isolated rat hearts were excised and attached to the Langendorff apparatus. To assess the effects of acute administration of L-methionine, L-cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, and sodium hydrogen sulfide, the hearts were perfused individually with each of the mentioned substances at same single dose of 0.5 mmol/l for 5 min. In collected samples of coronary venous effluent oxidative stress biomarkers were determined using spectrophotometry. Total homocysteine level was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, and the effects of applied sulfur-containing compounds were significantly different in experimental and control groups. DL-homocysteine induced considerable changes in functioning of cardiovascular system even before an increase in plasma homocysteine values, and action of sulfur-containing compounds varied depending on the presence of homocysteine.
