Opis:
Pear (Pyrus communis L.) is consumed as fresh fruit, in numerous food products, and also used as a traditional remedy in various countries, including Serbia. In search of bioactive compounds, six traditional pear varieties (‘Vidovača’, ‘Lubeničarka’, ‘Karamanka’, ‘Jeribasma’, ‘Lončara’, ‘Takiša’) and wild pear from Serbia were investigated and compared with a commercial variety (‘Williams Bartlett’). The aim of this study was to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, phenolic composition, antioxidant capacity, and antineurodegenerative activities of methanolic extracts of peel, flesh, and mixed peel and flesh of pear fruits. Phenolic composition of extracts was determined with HPLC-DAD, while the antioxidant activity of extracts was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Bearing in mind that oxidative stress is closely linked to neurodegeneration, the antineurodegenerative potential of the extracts was assessed by the inhibition of acetycholineserase (AChE) and tyrosinase (TYR) activities. The extracts of traditional varieties, particularly peel extracts, had a high content of phenolics, as well as significant antioxidant and moderate antineurodegenerative potential, compared to the commercial variety. The highest contents of total flavonoids and individual compounds, such as arbutin and chlorogenic acid, as well as the strongest antioxidant and TYR inhibitory activities were reported for the ‘Takiša’ peel extract. The performed analyses have revealed that fruits of traditional Serbian pear varieties are rich in bioactive components and could be used as functional food and for possible nutraceutical applications, to prevent diseases induced by oxidative stress.

Introduction/aim: The aims of this study were to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model for the clearance of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in non-elderly postmenopausal women and to identify the factors which have a significant influence on its clearance. Methods: The study population consisted of postmenopausal women who had been referred for evaluation of bone mineral density (BMD) by DEXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) scanner. The population pharmacokinetics modelling was conducted using the ADVAN 1 subroutine from a non-linear mixed effects (NONMEM) program, and thirty-two covariates were assessed. Results: A total of 75 serum concentrations were obtained from the same number of postmenopausal women and used for PPK analysis. The mean values of the participants’ age was 57.92±3.93 years and their body weight was 69.76±11.49kg. A wide range of 25-hydroxy vitamin D concentrations was observed (from 3.41 to 61.92ng/mL) with a mean value of 26.19±10.95ng/mL. A total of 32 covariates were examined and preliminary results suggested the influence of six covariates on 25-hydroxy vitamin D clearance. In the final PPK model however, only one covariate was shown to have a significant impact on the clearance value – the mean daily dietary intake dose of vitamin D (DD). Conclusions: These findings offer a preliminary basis on which to determine the level of vitamin D supplementation required by individual postmenopausal women. It could prove particularly important in achieving optimal serum levels of vitamin D in this vulnerable population.

Conventional eye drops exhibit weak bioavailability due to the unique physiology and anatomy of the eye. In order to increase eye drops viscosity, different concentrations of Carbopol® 940 (0.08% and 0.20%) were used. The aim of the study was to indicate the advantages and examine the influence of preservatives and the concentrations of viscosity increasing agents on the quality of magistral viscous eye drops with dexpanthenol (DXP). The quality of the prepared formulations was tested using physico-chemical methods and biological tests. pH Value measurement was done by the potentiometric method). Viscosity measurements of the samples were performed according to Ph. Eur. 9.0. DXP content was determined by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. Sterility testing was performed using direct sample inoculation. The results indicate that pH values of eye drops with preservatives are lower than pH values of preservative-free formulations. All formulations have recovery values that meet the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia. The DXP content in preservative-free eye drops increased slightly during testing, unlike the DXP content in eye drops with preservatives. The formulations remained sterile during 45 days after preparation, stored at room temperature, protected from light. DXP viscous eye drops may be prepared in pharmaceutical practice using the proposed viscosity increasing agent (Carbopol® 940) and preparation procedure. All formulations express stability for 45 days after preparation. Preservative-free DXP eye drops with Carbopol® 940 concentrations of 0.08% and 0.20% show maximal stability, provide an optimal concentration of DXP (3.0%), and therefore have an advantage in pharmaceutical practice.

Due to challenging times caused by the global pandemic and the common dynamic reality of contemporary food supply chains, logistics employees inevitably become the most valuable resource. Companies are forced to continuously monitor and forecast employee satisfaction and possible turnover intention. The paper aims to explore the impact of organizational commitment on the turnover intention among employees in logistics organizations of food supply chain companies. While the direction of this impact is rather unquestionable, the main purpose is to determine the strength of correlation and defining the more dominant commitment aspect in shaping turnover intention. Methods: A primary empirical study was conducted on a sample of 121 employees working on logistics activities workplaces from 5 companies in the food supply chain in Croatia. The turnover intention scale and organizational commitment scale were used to measure the effect of organizational commitment on turnover intention. For regression analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM), SPSS 21.0, and AMOS 21.0 software were used to analyze the relationship of these variables. Results: After testing the proposed structural model and achieving the model fit, the explanation of variance in turnover intention was 43.4%, and after including the activity type and the personal monthly income as control variables, 44.5%. The strong, direct, significant, and negative influence of affective organizational commitment on employee turnover intention has been proven, while there was no significant influence of normative commitment. Control variables have improved the model, but without significant influence on turnover intention. Conclusions: This research has filled the gap and highlighted the importance of overall organizational commitment among employees in logistics activities, emphasizing affective commitment. It was confirmed that an emotional connection with the organization is of particular importance to retain employees in the organization. Organizations’ investment in building and strengthening long-term affective commitment is time-consuming and seeks for interpersonal skills for managers, which could be neglected in logistics activities focused on flow improvement.
Ze względu na zmieniające się warunki, wynikające z globalnej pandemii oraz dynamicznie zmieniającej się rzeczywistości, w której działa łańcuch dostaw żywności, pracownicy logistyki stają się bardzo ważnych zasobem. Przedsiębiorstwa są zmuszone do ciągłego monitorowania i estymowania poziomu zadowolenia zatrudnionych. Celem pracy jest zbadanie wpływu zaangażowania organizacyjnego na zmianę nastawienia wśród pracowników logistyki przedsiębiorstw działających w obrębie łańcucha dostaw żywności. Choć wpływ ten jest raczej niepodlegający dyskusji, to głównym celem jest określenie siły korelacji i zdefiniowanie dominującego czynnika wpływającego na zmianę nastawienia. Metody: Podstawowa analiza empiryczna została przeprowadzona na próbie 121 zatrudnionych pracujących na stanowiskach logistycznych w 5 przedsiębiorstwach działających w łańcuchach dostaw żywności w Chorwacji. Skala zmian nastawienia oraz zaangażowania organizacyjnego zostały użyte do zmierzenia efektu wpływu zaangażowania organizacyjnego na zmianę nastawienia pracowników. Dla przeprowadzenia analizy regresji i modelowania strukturalnego SEM, zostało użyte oprogramowanie SPSS 21.0 oraz AMOS 21.0. Wyniki: W wyniki przetestowania proponowanego modelu strukturalnego, otrzymano wyniki zmiany nastawienia w wysokości 43,4%, a po uwzględnieniu typu aktywności oraz miesięcznego poziomu pensji jako zmiennych kontrolnych, 44,5%. Silny, bezpośredni, istotny i negatywny wpływ organizacyjnego zaangażowania na zmianę nastawienia pracowników został udowodniony, podczas gdy nie wykazano istotnego wpływu dla standardowego zaangażowania. Zmienne kontrolne poprawiły model ale bez istotnego wpływu na zmianę nastawienia. Wnioski: Praca wypełnia lukę w prowadzonych badaniach i zwraca uwagę na istotność zaangażowania organizacyjnego dla pracowników logistyki, podkreślając istotę zaangażowania emocjonalnego. Zostało potwierdzone, że emocjonalna więź w obrębie organizacji pomaga utrzymać zatrudnionych. Inwestycja organizacji w budowaniu i wzmacnianiu długoterminowego emocjonalnego zaangażowania wymaga sporo czasu i konieczności wśród kierownictwa umiejętności interpersonalnych, które mogą być lekceważone w obrębie działalności logistycznej skupionej na poprawie przepływów.

The study analyzed colour intensity, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as antioxidant and antibacterial activities of honeys from Serbia. All the tested honeys contained considerable levels of phenolics. The highest phenolic content was obtained in forest honey - 1389.71 mg gallic acid equivalents/kg. High levels of phenolics and flavonoids were also determined in honeydew, meadow and oregano honeys. The radical scavenging activity measured by DPPH method in linden and forest honey was 0.45 and 2.75 mmol Trolox equivalents/kg, respectively. The ferric reducing potential was the greatest in forest honey - 6.04 mmol Fe2+/kg. Darker honeys had a greater phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The antimicrobial activity of honeys against six bacterial strains isolated from human material were studied using a microwell dilution assay. The minimal inhibitory concentration of honeys ranged from 6.25% w/w (for oregano honey against Enterococcus faecalis and honeydew honey against Streptococcus pneumoniae) to >50% w/w (meadow honey against Staphylococcus aureus). The minimal bactericidal concentration ranged from 12.5% w/w (honeydew and bee pollen enriched honey against E. faecalis) to >50% w/w. Higher values of antimicrobial activities were found in honeydew, oregano, and forest honeys, while meadow honey showed the lowest antimicrobial activity. Analyzed honeys exhibited a strong antioxidant and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria. Phenolic compounds, especially in dark amber forest and honeydew honey, as well as in amber oregano honey, may contribute to their efficacy in therapeutic administration.

In the present work, fruits from two plant species, Rosa canina L. and Sorbus aucuparia L., popular in traditional folk medicine in Serbia, were studied. The aim was to examine and compare the efficiency of the ultrasonic extraction with different solvents regarding physicochemical properties, polyphenolic profile of extracts, as well as their tyrosinase inhibitory and antioxidant activity. The polyphenols evaluation indicated that water was the best solvent for a thorough extraction of bioactive compounds from the R. canina fruits, while propylene glycol-water (45:55, v/v) was the most efficient regarding S. aucuparia fruits, followed by ethanol-water (7:3, v/v). Only flavonoids were more abundant in S. aucuparia fruit extracts. R. canina water extracts showed a higher antioxidant activity, using several in vitro tests with different working principles. However, S. aucuparia ultrasonic extracts with propylene glycol-water (45:55, v/v) demonstrated a higher potential concerning tyrosinase inhibitory and chelating activity. Therefore, these ultrasonic extracts, being great sources of natural anti-tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidants, can be considered as promising candidates suitable for pharmaceutical application, as great sources of natural anti-tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidants.
