RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to analyze the ontic status of harmony in Pythagorean philosophy. THE RESEARCH PROBLEMS AND METHODS: The main problem undertaken in the article is an analysis of the ontic status of harmony in Pythagorean philosophy, conducted within the context of the theory of principles. The research method is based on an analysis of source texts. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article begins with an analysis of passages from the works of Philolaus of Croton. Next, the treaty Peri archan attributed to Archytas of Tarentum is analyzed. The analysis of the source texts includes references to the main interpretative positions contained in the secondary literature. RESEARCH RESULTS: The most important result of the scientific analysis conducted here is the organization of the possible interpretations of the ontic status of harmony and indication of the main difficulties associated with them. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In his conclusions, the author indicates interpretative possibilities resulting from the perspective taken in the article, as well as areas that require further study, concerning such issues as the relationship between Pythagorean and Orphic thought.

Piotr Świercz, The meaning of notion „nature” in the political doctrine of Thomas Hobbes against a background of „zoon politikon” conception. The main aim of this article is to examine meaning of “nature”, “stateof nature” and “natural condition of mankind” in the political doctrineof Thomas Hobbes. It should be emphasised that is a matter of notion“nature”, not a Hobbes’ description of natural state. Some posibilitiesare taken into consideration: “nature” as an essence, “nature” (“stateof nature”) as a wildness, “nature” as opposed to “artificial”, “nature”as an abstract conception of human individual. To emphasize the importanceof title problem, it’s showed against a background of classical(greek and christian) idea of zoon politikon. It seemed justified becauseHobbes’ political doctrine is considered (even by Hobbes) as opposedto classical understanding of human nature. In the recapitulation ofthis thesis author tries to indicate the reasons of Hobbes’ doctrine obscurityand consequences of this obscurity for modern political ideas.

W artykule omówiono istotę politycznego potencjału człowieka, zinterpretowanego jako fundament jego politycznej aktywności, w ramach europejskiej myśli politycznej. Zagadnienie to bada się w perspektywie paradygmatów tradycji europejskiej: starożytności, chrześcijaństwa i nowożytności. Po zanalizowaniu niektórych źródeł reprezentatywnych dla tychże paradygmatów autor zmierza do konkluzji, iż istotą politycznego potencjału człowieka jest, odpowiednio, mądrość, miłość i strach.  The article discusses the essence of the human political potential, interpretated as fundament of human political activity, in European political thought. This problem is exemined in the perspective of paradigms of European tradition: antiquity, Christianity and modernity. After analysis of some sources, representative for above mentioned paradigms, author concludes that, the essence of the political potential is, respectively, wisdom, love and fear.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is an analysis of Witold Gombrowicz’s position in reference to the archetype of Polish political culture. THE RESEARCH PROBLEMS AND METHODS: The main problem undertaken in the article is an analysis of Witold Gombrowicz’s position in reference to the question of Polishness, its components, and its relationship to Latin civilization. The article is based on an analysis of Gombrowicz’s Diary. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article begins with a synthetic outline of two fundamental issues: the Latinness of European civilization and the debate surrounding the archetype of Polish political culture. This is followed by what constitutes the main body of the article: an analysis of Gombrowicz’s views on Polishness. RESEARCH RESULTS: The most important result of the scientific analysis conducted here is the indication of the main theses of Gombrowicz’s understanding of Polishness and of the relationship between Polishness and Latin civilization. Gombrowicz’s conception is presented as an innovative approach to the problem, transcending traditional takes on Polishness as a specific type of realism. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In his conclusions, the author indicates interpretative possibilities resulting from the perspective taken in the article, as well as areas that require further study, concerning such issues as the relationship between the Sonland and the Fatherland, and the culture of the Polish nobility during the “Saxon Era.”

The author’s aim is to analyse the problem of criticism in the context of political sciences, in particular in the context of political philosophy. The issue is considered in the light of two basic epistemological standpoints: contextualism and presentism. These two approaches are often regarded as mutually exclusive; however, the author presents arguments for their possible complementarity and demonstrates that their concurrence is the necessary point of departure for critical attitudes in political philosophy.

The aim of this article is to analyze Plato’s epistemology of politics in the light of Book VII of the Republic, in which the Allegory of the Cave is introduced. The problem named in the title is presented within the framework of a veritative interpretation of Greek ontology (referencing Charles Kahn’s work) and against the backdrop of Plato’s polemic with sophistry (Protagoras and Gorgias), along with references to the sources of Plato’s inspiration – the Eleatics and Pythagoreans. In my analysis I propose hypotheses concerning certain aspects of the Cave Allegory (e.g. the status of the fire) and present my interpretation of Plato’s politico-philosophical project.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The objective of the article is an analysis of the Epic of Gilgamesh from the perspective of political philosophy. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main research problem undertaken in this article is the problem of human nature and its connection with political power in light of the Sumero-Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh. The article is based on an analysis of the source text (the Epic of Gilgamesh) in the English version by Andrew George, with the secondary literature also taken into consideration. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The point of departure is a justification of the subject undertaken here, with a reference to Leo Strauss’ political philosophy. Next, three key aspects of the subject matter are analyzed: the humanization of Enkidu, the search for immortality, and the conception of political power. RESEARCH RESULTS: The main result of the scientific analysis is the indication of themes concerning the significance and understanding of human nature and their relationship to the concept of political power that formed in Mesopotamia. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In the conclusions, the author indicates the unmistakable presence of a notion of human nature in Sumero-Akkadian reflection, as well as the connection between this notion of human nature and a paradigm of political power. The author also points to a religious aspect crucial for understanding these concepts.

CEL NAUKOWY: celem artykułu jest analiza dramatu Witolda Gombrowicza Ślub z perspektywy filozofii polityki. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Głównym problemem podjętym w artykule jest analiza dramatu Ślub w kontekście głównych tematów twórczości Witolda Gombrowicza, czyli problematyki „czystej formy”, relacji między Ojczyzną i Synczyzną oraz Kościoła Międzyludzkiego. Artykuł opiera się na analizie tekstów źródłowych Gombrowicza (Ślub, A Guide to Philosophy, Dziennik) dokonanej w kontekście wspomnianych powyżej głównych tematów jego refleksji. PROCES WYWODU: tekst rozpoczyna się od uzasadnienia podjęcia przez autora próby analizy Ślubu z perspektywy filozofii polityki. Realizacja tego celu wymagała syntetycznego ujęcia zagadnienia filozofii polityki, zwieńczonego roboczą definicją tejże. Następnie, również w sposób bardzo syntetyczny i zwięzły, analizie poddane są główne tematy twórczości W. Gombrowicza. W tym kontekście podjęty jest wreszcie główny cel artykułu – analiza dramatu Ślub z perspektywy filozofii polityki. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: głównym wynikiem analizy naukowej prowadzonej w niniejszym artykule jest sformułowanie spójnej interpretacji dramatu W. Gombrowicza Ślub z perspektywy filozofii polityki. W interpretacji zostały uwzględnione trzy spośród czterech wskazanych głównych tematów dzieł Gombrowicza. W sposób zamierzony poza analizą pozostawiony został wątek „życia ułatwionego”. Całość analiz została ukazana na tle Kartezjańskiej koncepcji Cogito, stanowiącej tło całej twórczości Autora Ferdydurke. WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: we wnioskach autor wskazuje na różne możliwości interpretacji kluczowych zagadnień podjętych w artykule (między innymi relacji między Ojczyzną i Synczyzną) tworząc w ten sposób punkt wyjścia do dalszych badań dotyczących zarówno problematyki politycznej (bądź metapolitycznej), jak i problematyki stanowiska Gombrowicza odnoście do zagadnienia archetypu polskiej kultury politycznej. SŁOWA KLUCZOWE: Witold Gombrowicz, Cogito, filozofia polityczna, dramat Ślub, władza polityczna.
