Opis:
The paper presents a vision based approach and neural network techniques in surface defects inspection and categorization. Depending on part design and processing techniques, castings may develop surface discontinuities such as cracks and pores that greatly influence the material’s properties Since the human visual inspection for the surface is slow and expensive, a computer vision system is an alternative solution for the online inspection. The authors present the developed vision system uses an advanced image processing algorithm based on modified Laplacian of Gaussian edge detection method and advanced lighting system. The defect inspection algorithm consists of several parameters that allow the user to specify the sensitivity level at which he can accept the defects in the casting. In addition to the developed image processing algorithm and vision system apparatus, an advanced learning process has been developed, based on neural network techniques. Finally, as an example three groups of defects were investigated demonstrates automatic selection and categorization of the measured defects, such as blowholes, shrinkage porosity and shrinkage cavity.

Opis:
A new camera based machine vision system for the automatic inspection of surface defects in aluminum die casting was developed by the authors. The problem of surface defects in aluminum die casting is widespread throughout the foundry industry and their detection is o f paramount importance in maintaining product quality. The casting surfaces are the most highly loaded regions of materials and components. Mechanical and thermal loads as well as corrosion or irradiation attacks are directed primarily at the surface of the castings. Depending on part design and processing techniques, castings may develop surface discontinuities such as cracks or tears, inclusions due to chemical reactions or foreign material in the molten metal, and pores that greatly influence the material ability to withs tand these loads. Surface defects may act as a stress concentrator initiating a fracture point. If a pressure is applied in this area, the casting can fracture. The human visual system is well adapted to perform in areas of variety and change; the visual inspection processes, on the other hand, require observing the same type of image repeatedly to detect anomalies. Slow, expensive, erratic inspection usually is the result. Computer based visual inspection provides a viable alternative to human inspectors. Developed by authors machine vision system uses an image processing algorithm based on modified Laplacian of Gaussian edge detection method to detect defects with different sizes and shapes. The defect inspection algorithm consists of three parameters. One is a parameter of defects sensitivity, the second parameter is a thres hold level and the third parameter is to identify the detected defects size and shape. The machine vision system has been successfully tested for the different types of defects on the surface of castings.

Opis:
The scientific objective of the research is to develop a strategy to build computer based vision systems for inspection of surface defects in products, especially discontinuities which appear in castings after machining. In addition to the proposed vision inspection method the authors demonstrates the development of the advanced computer techniques based on the methods of scanning to measure topography of surface defect in offline process control. This method allow to identify a mechanism responsible for the formation of casting defects. Also, the method allow investigating if the, developed vision inspection system for identification of surface defects have been correctly implemented for an online inspection. Finally, in order to make casting samples with gas and shrinkage porosity defects type, the LGT gas meter was used . For this task a special camera for a semi-quantitative assessment of the gas content in aluminum alloy melts, using a Straube-Pfeiffer method was used. The results demonstrate that applied solution is excellent tool in preparing for various aluminum alloys the reference porosity samples, identified next by the computer inspection system.

The objective of the paper is to demonstrate a measurement strategy for online inspection of surface defects in products, especially discontinuities which appear in castings after machining. The essence of the proposed online vision inspection system is to provide an automated method for obtaining and analyzing images of the inspected surfaces, to allow an unmistakable and consistent finding of defects and specifying their types. The proposed solution could improve productivity and quality in the manufacturing process especially for the automotive industry and significantly improve automatysation in die casting technology. This is one of the most fundamental problems of a research studies in process design for automotive parts such as: handles of transmission systems, cylinder pistons and cylinder front faces in engine bodies, that has significant influence for the manufacturing cost. Proposed by the author an online vision inspection systems are responded to users demands for systems that are easier to use, low-cost, and flexible. Using a combination of a vision hardware and software, the proposed vision system could analyze the images, usually in a fraction of a second. Since the human visual inspection is slow and expensive, a smart technology is an alternative solution for the online inspection. The developed smart technology uses advance vision system with specially designed lighting, an advanced image processing algorithm for defect detection and their classification.

Opis:
Due to the wide range of various sheet metal grades and the need to verify the material properties, there are numerous methods to determine the material formability. One of them, that allows quick determination of sheet metal formability, is the Erichsen cupping test described in the ISO 20482: 2003 standard. In the presented work, the results of formability assessment for DC04 deepdrawing sheet metal were obtained by means of the traditionally carried out Erichsen cupping test and compared with the resultsobtained by using two advanced methods based on vision analysis. Application of these methods allows extending the traditional scope of analysis during Erichsen cupping test by determination of the necking and strain localization before fracture. The proposed methods were compared in order to dedicate appropriate solution for the industrial application and laboratory tests respectively, where the simplicity and reliability are the mean aspects need to be considered when applied to the Erichsen cupping test.

Opis:
The paper discusses possible applications of the percolation theory in analysis of the microstructure images of polycrystalline materials. Until now, practical use of this theory in metallographic studies has been an almost unprecedented practice. Observation of structures so intricate with the help of this tool is far from the current field of its application. Due to the complexity of the problem itself, modern computer programmes related with the image processing and analysis have been used. To enable practical implementation of the task previously established, an original software has been created. Based on cluster analysis, it is used for the determination of percolation phenomena in the examined materials. For comparative testing, two two-phase materials composed of phases of the same type (ADI matrix and duplex stainless steel) were chosen. Both materials have an austenitic - ferritic structure. The result of metallographic image analysis using a proprietary PERKOLACJA.EXE computer programme was the determination of the content of individual phases within the examined area and of the number of clusters formed by these phases. The outcome of the study is statistical information, which explains and helps in better understanding of the planar images and real spatial arrangement of the examined material structure. The results obtained are expected to assist future determination of the effect that the internal structure of two-phase materials may have on a relationship between the spatial structure and mechanical properties.

Opis:
Advanced vision method of analysis of the Erichsen cupping test based on laser speckle is presented in this work. This method proved to be useful for expanding the range of information on material formability for two commonly used grades of steel sheets: DC04 and DC01. The authors present a complex methodology and experimental procedure that allows not only to determine the standard Erichsen index but also to follow the material deformation stages immediately preceding the occurrence of the crack. Accurate determination of these characteristics in the sheet metal forming would be an important application, especially for automotive industry. However, the sheet metal forming is a very complex manufacturing process and its success depends on many factors. Therefore, attention is focused in this study on better understanding of the Erichsen index in combination with the material deformation history.

Opis:
Energy transfer between excited rare-earth ions has been widely used for realizing upconversion lasers and also recognized as a gain limiting factor in high-concentration Er-doped amplifiers. The energy transfer leads to upconversion of the excitation which for randomly distributed (not clustered) ions is called homogeneous upconversion. It was commonly assumed that the rate of homogeneous upconversion is a linear function of the population inversion N$\text{}_{2}$. However, recently published Monte Carlo simulations predict that the homogeneous upconversion rate is a nonlinear function of N$\text{}_{2}$ and that it, moreover, depends on the pump and signals rates. In this paper we review some of our experimental results confirming those predictions. We also propose a statistical, analytical model describing the observed homogeneous upconversion behavior in Er-doped fibers.
