Opis:
Family and identity are notions which often appear together. Talking about identity, we underline the role of previous socialisation in the family for the sake of constructing the picture of oneself. In turn, talking about family, we do not forget the roles which are bases to autodescriptions. The presented text relates to the understanding of identity by secondary school youth and is based on the results of TST and the association test (of the notion identity). Two models of defining oneself have been distinguished. The former is related to family bonds, whereas the latter – with personality traits. Women defined themselves in the context of family bonds and roles more often than men.

The research results presented in this article originate from the research and educational project conducted from January to June 2017, titled Prevention of cervical carcinoma, or how it is done in Tychy. Analysis of knowledge sources and the views on HPV vaccines, which was funded with a grant by the Polish Cancer League Foundation. The research material allowed for formulating the guidelines for the educational and preventive treatment programs addressed to young people and their parents. Despite free vaccinations against the HPV virus from some local governments, the percentage of people covered by vaccinations is decreasing. What is needed in order to reverse the negative tendencies is a set of new, innovative solutions, addressed at the needs and expectations of the beneficiaries. Therefore, people should be educated on the risk of falling ill, while HPV vaccinations constitute an important element of primary prevention.

What Does Identity Mean for Young People in Poland?

Opis:
This article focuses on young people in Poland and their ways of constructing identity. The research is based on fieldwork conducted in 2013-2014 among (605) Polish secondary school students. The respondents were asked to answer the “Twenty Statements Test” and, later on, to write down their own associations related to the notion of identity. The obtained data comprises answers provided by the respondents, whose places of residence are characterised by a high num- ber of people declaring nationality other than Polish (according to the Polish National Survey of 2011) and whose places of residence are homogenous in terms of national affi liations. The collected empirical data was suffi cient to indicate six milieus in which human identity is constructed: personality, gender, family, religion, language, and “space” (i.e., people’s identifications with a region, state, or nation). The first four milieus were very frequently placed in statements produced by the secondary school students. When confronted with the question “Who are you”, the secondary school students were no longer willing to say “I’m a Pole/ German/Silesian”. Perhaps the 21st century marks a time when nations or states are no longer relevant spaces of domestication and people are more willing to refer to cities or regions in their quest for identification.

Stigmas of marginalization and exclusion in the environment of a big city

Opis:
Stigmas are clear, irrational, emotional, provoking signs also thought of as a taint. People are marked with it. They mark the space. The source of stigma may be, according to Goffman, the origins, features of character or looks. The taint is not always connected with a deviant action, rule abuse and norm violation. Not each difference causes rejection; only the one which is noticed and unaccepted by the social audience. The mechanism of stigmatization in the big city environment goes from the space to its inhabitants. A marked space, forbidden district mark the inhabitants, sentencing them to rejection. Richness ghettos are formed next to poverty ghettos. This space marks as well. The very article discusses stigmas of the cultural foreignness, origins, differences because of illness or life style. The author makes an attempt to answer the question of the features the stigma must have to exist as such in the social awareness, especially among the inhabitants of the contemporary city. The results of the sociological studies conducted in Katowice allow for making a statement that the exclusion of marked people from city celebration, its conveniences and entertainments causes marginalization of individuals and whole groups. The big city space excludes the poor, the unemployed, the homeless, the sick, people of different looks, customs, traditions, natures. They become marked with the tint of otherness. What is also marked is the space of the part of the city inhabited by them in the awareness of its other inhabitants.

Opis:
The paper attempts to answer the question about the relation between the construction of national identity in contemporary world and children’s literature. Qualitative analysis of books for children was made. The main assumption is that stories we tell children create a specific cultural map of narration, thanks to which children create the feeling of identity, which is both individual and social. Contemporary literature for young children, contrary to older books, is devoid of national character.

Opis:
The pandemic outbreak in 2020 has influenced all aspects of social life. We focus on the education system and its impact on social (in)equality using Poland’s case to analyse them, through the notion of Bordieuan social field and knowledge-power relations. We claim that lockdown put into motion important processes or even systemic changes of education, by the emancipation and empowerment mechanism of social actors that aspire to be an active part of the educational field. In Poland, we deal with a static, centralized and hierarchic system. The time of pandemic made the field of education more dynamic. New actors were invited with the result that the power-knowledge relations changed. In this frame, we put the question about educational inequalities. We ask how the educational field is changing in face of the unforeseen and scarcely manageable global pandemic risk. Do they mean less in the global pandemic context or, on the contrary, are they strengthened?

Opis:
More and more high functioning pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are finishing school, graduating and entering higher education, but in Poland the exact number of these students is still unknown. For academics, especially outside the field of pedagogy and psychology, it is a major challenge to work with students with such dysfunctions. This can activate the social labelling process and negative stigmatisation on the part of people who do not have the knowledge and ability to interact with people with autistic traits. This, in turn, can contribute to perpetuating the stigmatic identity of non‑neurotypical students. This article is exploratory. Its purpose is to present the complexity of the situation of students with ASD within the exceptional environment of a university. The inspiration was a controversial article published in a newspaper which evoked a media debate on this issue and activated the process of objectification of social representations of non‑neurotypical adults, especially those with autistic traits.

Opis:
The health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily suspended many of the existing rules and principles of the social order. This crisis can be described as social anomie. In this article, we explore the coping strategies of persons with disabilities in this state using the example of the families of individuals on the autism spectrum. While the neurodiversity of people on the spectrum is associated with adaptation difficulties and a low tolerance of change, the outbreak of the pandemic introduced abrupt changes in the functioning of institutions, the trajectories of daily life, and existing routines. The analysis of in-depth interviews conducted among parents of children on the autism spectrum shows how, in the face of radical changes in their external conditions, caregivers adapted the available measures to the developmental needs of their children and other family members. In the face of an anomic social order, innovation turned out to be the dominant coping strategy.
Analiza wywiadów pogłębionych przeprowadzonych wśród opiekunów dzieci w spektrum autyzmu pokazała, jak wobec diametralnych zmian warunków funkcjonowania opiekunowie dostosowali dostępne sposoby działania do potrzeb rozwojowych dzieci i pozostałych członków rodziny. Wobec anomijnego porządku społecznego dominującą strategią radzenia sobie okazała się innowacja.
