Opis:
Basing on example of a small de Fontaines church at Neuchâtel, Switzerland the author deals With an essential problem of adaptative restoration works being undertaken in architectural objects of historical character. Though the building in question, when considered from the viewpoint of history of art, cannot be classified as one belonging to the top category the restoration works carried out gave rise to a great deal of interesting discussion. The problems involved in restoration of th a t church were presented in the summer of 1971 at the International Centre for the Study of Preservation and the Restoration of Cultural Property, Rome, th a t has been established under the auspices of UNESCO, as a specific fea ture in certain modern tendencies present in the conservator’s work. During th e course of restoration in 1969 from the church interior were removed its neo-Gothic fittings made of wood, except for pulpit, whose place took a number of wood furnishings extremely simple in their shapes. In this strive to achieve an intended simplicity and the most functional character of the church’s interior the conservators have, however, advanced too far, as the new fittings are quite drastically modern as to their forms and worse still in sharp contrast to architecture. In this connection the fact th a t from among elements of the former fittings the pulpit has been left as the only element seems to be a misunderstanding or even failure. The author emphasizes th a t it is not the change of fittings alone with which he is dealing in his article but the so-called spirit of the monument meant as the character and climate of authenticity. The excessively modernized interior of de Fontaines church has become one sterile and deprived of colour thus loosing its intrinsic climate and character.

Opis:
Reviewing the example of the Fontelle Abbey, Saint- Wandrille, France the author devoted his considerations to the problem of rearrangement of ancient architectural objects from the viewpoint of the present tendencies in conservation. To a thorough analysis and assessment were subjected two kinds of such rearrangements, namely this called „positive” a rising, for instance, from objective necessities as, e.g. a decay of a building being a consequence of earthquake, and that „negative”, i.e. the need to move it to another place in view of the townplanning or spatial development requirements. The old Gothic temple of the Fontelle Abbey has been demolished during the French Revolution. After the World War II the architect Paul Tournon specializing in the rebuilding of the sacred architecture has been entrusted with the task of its reconstruction; however, it was the lack of adequate financial means that has caused the stoppage of the whole project. After the death of P. Tournon his daughter Marion has, in collaboration with A. le Donne, realized an entirely different solution of the problem. An abandoned thirteenth-century stone-built barn in Eure District was acquired by the Abbey that, according to plans, had to be demolished. This ancient building was stripped into the separate stone-masonry and timber elements which in turn were moved to Saint-Wandrille where they have been reassembled retaining a large proportion of those original including the old rafter framing. The barn interior of some 9.000 m* space has been adapted to the function of a monastery church. As a result of the above adaptation it proved necessary to reshape some portions of the barn’s walls which the remaking was forced by the new function; so, for instance, the front entrance had to be extended by an addition of a new gate span. These alterations did not, however, too strongly affect the original beauty or the character of the building. While summarizing his review the author comes to conclusion that both rearrangement and adaptation to a new function in the case of de Fontelle Abbey may be considered as a positive example of safequarding of an ancient building through its adjusting to requirements of the present-day life.

Opis:
There is a certain group of architectural objects in Poland whose place among those considered ais monuments is still far from to be duly appreciated. By saying this the au th o r has in mind a wide range of fortifications coming from th e 118th and 19th century which represent the lasting monuments of works carried out in this country by the Polish, Russian, Austrian and Prussian military engineers and architects. There are, however, also many reasons to grow seriously disquiet by the fact th a t the state of p r e servation of these fortifications deteriorates at an increasing rate as a result of the lack of proper legal protection and preserving care they are fully deserving. In a situation where no adequate financial means are available for preservation of the 19th-centu ry objects the only proper solution may be found in form of a suitable and appropriate adaptation of the afore-mentioned fortifications to the modern in dustrial, scientific, touring and recreational purposes, however, with this indiispensible condition in view th a t all these adaptative works should be carried out by experts notorious of the ir high sensibility for matters connected with the preservation of monuments and protection of historical sites. • A number of attempts of th a t kind have been undertaken by the author within the activities of the Chair of Polish Architecture, Polytechnical School, Warsaw under the guidance of Professor Dr. J. Zachwatowicz and Docent A. Gruszecki. The present publication deals with one of workis in this field. Its chief objective consists in adaptation of the Fort No 1 at Zakroczym forming a p a rt of Modlin fortified system, which is to be converted into a modern cider producing plant and at the same time giving this valuable object the function of museum and a place of inte rest for tourists. The stimulus for the beginning of works connected with this object has been given by the fact th a t the Modlin fortress talkes quite an exceptional place among the 19th-century fortifications still existing on the Palish territory. After several modernizations within a period of Napoleonic wars and those ranging to the I World War, as the time passed it has become some kind of living museum enabling 'to observe the development of a rt of fortification. An attempt of adapting the Fort No 1 at Zakroczym undertaken by the author has been preceded by a wide range of architectural and historical studies (mainly basing on recorded sources) as well as by a series of on-the-spot investigations and excavations. They allowed ito find out th a t he fort has been built prior to 1885 and later was subjected to reconstructions in 1>91:2'—1914 which resulted in its actual mixed brickwork and concrete construction. There are two main elements defining the historical value of the object, namely its unique multi-level gun shed located in the fort gorge and the rarely found ea rth-built rifle squad trenches in the main bulwark. ^ As a re su lt of the above-mentioned studies and technical and economic analyses an adaptative design has been prepared covering the three following lines: (a) adaptation of fort to industrial purposes (cider producing plant) where as an additional factor, to a great ex ten t facilitating the production, could be considered the relatively great areas of casemates allowing to mellow and store wine a t the proper temperatures, (b) suitable exposure of the fort as an architectural monument with its internal pathway for visiting tourists (by no means obstructing the industrial handling lines) and the establishing of the Modlin fortifications museum, (c) linking of fort with a touring and recreational system of the town of Zakroczym and its nearest re gion, among the others, comprising the design of a motel, cider testing room, motor-car servicing sta tion and the camping site on the Vistula river side, all connected with the fort.

Opis:
The author deals with both situation and problems of historioa.l monuments protection in the United States of America emphasising the specific aspects of conservation in that country and quoting numerous examples of rehabilitation of monuments dating from colonial times and from the eighteenth and nieteenth centuries. There is no effectively acting regular conservation service in the States that could be compared with such services active in several European countries which does not mean, however, that no achievements were gained in America in the field of protection and rehabilitation of historical monuments. As one from among numerous examples he quotes the nineteenthcentury Cumberland School, Dallas. It has been carefully restored and then adapted for the Managing Offices of the South-East Drilling Company who granted the suitable financial means for that undertaking. It deserves to be noted that in the States the works have already been started aimed not only at protection of individual objects but also of the whole groupings and as examples of isuch practice may be considered the towns of San Antonio, Texas and San Augustine, Florida. To be especially emphasised deserve the efforts made at present with the view to safeguard a number of objects of military engineering and architecture forming the monuments from the eventful history of American people and in the first line of those from the times of Secession Wajr. The author presents, among the others, in his report the adaptation of the nineteenth-century fort of Sumter sited on the isle in Charleston Bay (South Carolina) which is to be turned into museum of arms. At the same time he puts forward an interesting hypothesis that as a model for the fort of Sumter could serve the Montalembert Tower of 1812 that has been erected in Napoleonic times within the fortress of Modlin near Warsaw. The similarity of forms in these two objects is one striking the eye. As one of the most interesting achievements the author presents the chapol in the Round Diamond Rancho, Hondo Valley where modern architecture has been perfectly adapted to relics of a sacred building from colonial times.

Opis:
Within the first half of 1971 the author of the present, acting on the joint appointment by the UNESCO and the Corporation of the Town of Capua, (Italy) prepared a series of surveys and studies covering a wide subject of conservation and rehabilitation of the Renaissance and modern bastion fortifications in Capua. The five-month period of works comprised their following stages: (1) historical investigations (making the use of the available written records the author, as the first person dealing with these materials, has prepared the history of evolution of Capuan fortifications), (2) the photogrammetric and field survey of objects, (3) the on-spot investigations of the state of preservation and of historical „strata” present in buildings, (4) the conservator’s recommendations, (5) the basic design of adaptation to the new functions. The design prepared by the author can not be considered as one supplying the possibility of its immediate realization. It should be regarded as one of rather directive character, since using both graphical and descriptive means of expression it covered a number of recommendations and hints for the future designers who may deal with architectural solutions of the separate elements of the entire complex. The above recommendations have been formulated in a manner excluding any restrictions as to the means of their creative ingenuity that may prove necessary to achieve the suitable detailed technical solutions. Nevertheless, as precisely as possible and in the forms binding for the future designers were formulated both requirements and prohibitive measures being a result of some reasons permanent as to their nature, i.e. those connected with the historical value, rules of the properly carried out conservation and adaptation of historic buildings and so forth. According to wish of promoters as the main objective for designing has been adopted that of converting the system of fortifications into a recreational and entertainment centre. In his endeavours to meet the above requirements the author has laid the main emphasis on such development of the space available that would permit to avoid even a slightest loss of historical values of that historical complex and at the same time to limit as far as possible the extent of deformations of its visual values. The above rules should, no doubt, be considered as the sine qua non requirements in every kind of adaptation but, unfortunately, it can even too frequently be seen that they are entirely neglected by most persons who are responsible for adaptation of historic buildings. In the author’s design the space to be occupied by the future recreational and entertainment centre has been split into the two sub-complexes, namely this named the South Complex stretching along the longer bastion front and that named the North Complex along the shorter front. As a matter of fact, the fortifications forming the latter complex are considerably less rich as to their forms when compared with those belonging to that southern, but the balance between the two has been obtained through the planning of a new centre of water sports within the site occupied by the northern sub-complex. The thus designed artificial lake has been isolated from both river and town by the planned green belts formed of new plantings composed of tall trees and also of low-growing plants. Within the southern sub-complex the author suggests to make the use of fosse as a promenade whereas in bastions and ravelins to locate some components of recreational and cultural centre as, for instance, museums of both types, i.e. the in-door and out-door, a space for the open-air „sound and light” performances, an amphitheatre fitted with a light-weight demountable metallic construction as well as a kindergarten, cafeterias, restaurants etc. As an element lin king both parts is to be treated the town itself. The whole complex has been designed to be able to receive the considerable numbers of visitors in which connection it has been proposed by the author to convert the former military barracks into hotels and to build a number of new hotels in the town. The design discussed above was in July 1971 displayed in an exhibition organized by the UNESCO at Capua where it gained general approval.
