    The text is about modality from a linguistic point of view. The author takes a broad understanding of a modal category (modality indentified with communicative intention) and analyses the so called basic modal units: verbs and predicates, which together with an infinitive create a verbal construction. She examines a function of the mentioned expressions in the Code of Canon Law. Willing to accept a specific character of contexts with modal expressions, she includes in the description conclusions coming from earlier study of newspaper texts, homilies and speeches of John Paul II.

    The author examines the language of the law. She refers to the contemporary acts; the legal regulations are the subject of her description. The author analyses legal cases which have been interpreted on the basis of the regulations. She discusses a modal dimension of the relationships which create legal cases and also makes closer characteristics of the participants of actions who are connected with these relationships. Language exponents of individual relations are presented. In order to emphasise specific character of legal material, the author precedes each description by indicating the peculiarities of modal dependence which are visible in sentences containing the so-called basic modal units. These sentences stem from other than legal modern Polish texts.

    Remarks made in the article are connected with issues mentioned in the researcher’s earlier works. They refer to a grammatical meaning in contemporary law texts. Speaking about hierarchical dependence, the author deals with the meaning of ‘the one who allows somebody to do something’. More precisely, the article is about a participant of an action who allows other participant of the same action to take up a given activity. The analysis has a syntax character. Its fundamental aim is to describe these elements of a sentence structure thanks to which the sentence is going to have a given grammatical meaning. Moreover, the analysis provides closer information about participants. This information infl uences activities of other participants of an action. It points to a status of these participants and their place in administration and law space.

    This paper deals with a nominal group (NG) of contemporary legal texts which have the form of statutes. The linguistic analysis based on the syntactic model with semantic rudiments. The author researches the anaphoric relation between nominal groups and sentences which are linearly prior to these groups. The nominal groups are products of the morpfological nominalization – substantivization. The analysis provides observation about restrictions in the formalization of elements of the semantic base whose elements can be connected with the use of nominal group. The author describes the different effects of nominalization, for example: condensation of content (from a very pure content of syntactic units to the cumulation of content in syntactic units), the tendency to autonomize the language (the disconnection of language and reality).

    The paper discusses prepositional constructions used in contemporary acts of law. The analysis covers the primary (traditional) prepositions as well as the secondary ones. When taking their nominal complement, the latter category shows the realization of two kinds of nominalization process: of the complete (proper) nominalization, which has its overt exponent in the form of an action noun; and of the reduced nominalization, in which formal constrains prevent the overt realization of an action noun. The author discusses the grammatical non-personal functions related to the traditional and the secondary prepositions. The analysis does not cover spatial and temporal meanings of the prepositions. The author wants to establish to what extent the particular grammatical functions in legal acts are realized by the traditional prepositions, and to what extent by the secondary ones. She also explains how the particular functions and legal meanings can be influenced by the particular nominalization processes.

    This paper deals with a group of contemporary legal texts which have the form of statutes. The author describes the anaphoric relation between nominal groups (NG) constituted by an event-driven element and sentences which are linearly prior to these groups, the so-called antecedents. The analysis, founded on principles of syntax with a semantic basis, provides observations about restrictions in the formalisation of elements of the semantic base whose elements can be connected with the use of NG. The disclosure of elements of the content plan, excluding exceptions, entails a condensation which causes that categorical meanings that are the most intensely governed and communicatively relevant are fulfilled on the surface. The inability to reproduce the meaning of the “grammatical agent” causes that NG with a constitutive event-driven element are an indication of the depersonalisation attributed to legal texts. The repeatability of NG, mainly one- and two-component phrases, as well as their initial location in an utterance are factors depicting another feature of statutes: syntactic schematism. The author also demonstrates that the system of intratextual references is not the same in various variants of the Polish language. In the statute, as a genre of the legal language, its specific nature is already noticeable within one of the systematising units of the legal text, i.e. the article. The specific nature of the examined relation is conditioned by (1) the proper arrangement of structures connected with a network of references, and (2) the manner of their denotation. These features are the results of adherence to the editorial principles of legal texts.

    The article is devoted to contemporary official documents of the religious language in the form of statutes of diocesan synods. Linguistic syntactic analysis focuses on the communicative intention and the ways of expressing it formally. The focus is mainly on verbs (classical modal predicates and exponents of intent such as to command, recommend, encourage) and verb-nominal structures. Syntactic structures with additional information about the sender’s motives are also described.
    Artykuł jest poświęcony współczesnym dokumentom urzędowym języka religijnego w postaci statutów synodów diecezjalnych. Językoznawcza analiza składniowa skupia się wokół intencji komunikacyjnej i sposobów jej formalnego wyrażania. W centrum uwagi mieszczą się głównie czasowniki (klasyczne predykaty modalne i wykładniki intencji typu nakazywać, zalecać, zachęcać) oraz struktury werbo-nominalne. Opisowi podlegają też konstrukcje syntaktyczne z dodatkową informacją o celu przyświecającym nadawcy.
