The paper presents a selection of cooking ware pottery excavated in 2014 and 2016 from the fill under the central and eastern parts of the main courtyard (1) of the “Hellenistic” House in Nea Paphos–Maloutena. Most of the studied vessels are of early Roman date and, for the most part, Cypriot production, although there is a spattering of imports from the Aegean, Italy, the Levant and Egypt.

The present paper analyses two Old Nubian inscriptions found at a church in Akasha West in 1969. The first inscription was found on an ostracon and invokes Jesus Christ. The second inscription was found on the altar inside the church’s sanctuary, and refers to the Holy Altar of Michael. The publication gives a description of the inscription, a transcription with critical apparatus, and a grammatical and general commentary on the text.

In one of the domestic rooms attached to the North-West Church at Hippos (Sussita), at least three ceramic pithoi were found, all of them in secondary use, possibly for the processing (storing?) of lime. One of them bore an inscription in Greek, scratched into its surface, which turned out to be an acclamation for the circus faction of the Blues. This interesting addition to the corpus of the factions’ inscriptions from Syro-Palestine is also lending the dating to the original period of the pithos’ use, which cannot be later than the Islamic conquest of the region in AD 636/638.

Archaeological excavations carried out by a mission from the Jagiellonian University Institute of Archaeology on the site of the agora of Nea Paphos in Cyprus brought to light a lead weight with a Greek inscription giving the year 251 of an era and mentioning an agoranomos with the name Seleukos. On the basis of parallels, the author demonstrates that the weight must have been issued by the North Syrian city of Seleucia in Pieria, and the era used in the inscription is the civic era of Seleucia with the starting point in 109/108 BC, which allows one to date the object to AD 142/143. He argues that the structure where the object was found can tentatively be identified as agoranomeion of Nea Paphos.

The volume brings together 36 fully peer-reviewed contributions in the field of Christian Egypt and Nubia studies, mirroring a lifetime of academic achievement by Prof. Włodzimierz Godlewski, in whose honor this jubilee book has been produced. The contributing scholars are both colleagues and associates, and the subjects they take up in their studies are focused on issues of archaeology, epigraphy, iconography, ceramics and material culture, as well as history of medieval and post-medieval Egypt and Nubia. In several cases, the articles concern material from two sites, Naqlun in Egypt and Dongola in Nubia, where Godlewski has conducted and directed research. Thus, for Naqlun we have the functionaries of the Nekloni monastery (T. Derda and J. Wegner), literary culture (A. Delattre and N. Vanthieghem, J. van der Vliet) as well as ceramics (T. Górecki) and glass vessels (M. Mossakowska-Gaubert), and architecture of the monastic complex from Naqlun (S. Maślak). For Old Dongola there is a study of Egyptian amphorae with dipinti (K. Danys and A. Łajtar) and costume of monks in wall paintings (K. Innemée). Broader studies concern issues like the functioning of a pilgrimage sanctuary in Egypt in late antiquity (E. Wipszycka), wine consumption and usage in Egypt’s monastic communities in the 6th–8th century (D. Dzierzbicka), aspects of the role of Archangel Raphael in Christian Nubia (M. Łaptaś), observations on the origins of “apse portraits” in Nubian royal iconography (M. Woźniak), the ideology and function of the northern pastophorium of Nubian churches based on inscriptions and paintings (A. Łajtar and D. Zielińska). Church architecture is taken up by P. Grossmann for Egypt and Nubia, and A. Obłuski for Nubia. W. Y. Adams gives an overview of evolution and revolution in Nubian pottery, J. R. Anderson and A. Harrison present unique hair textiles from British Museum excavations in Kulubnarti, while A. Boud’hors and E. Garel discuss what remains of the monastery library in Deir el-Bahari (a monograph of which was published by Godlewski early in his academic career). The history of Baybars’ Nubian conquests is taken up by R. Seignobos. Contributions have been offered also by Nettie Adams, M. Barwik, D. Edwards, K. Grzymski, B. Lichocka, A. Łukaszewicz, G. Ochała, M. Rassart-Debergh, T.S. Richter, G.R. Ruffini, H. and A. Tsakos, J. Then-Obłuska, G. van Loon, D. Welsby, I. Zych and B. Żurawski.
Tom dedykowany prof. Włodzimierzowi Godlewskiemu obejmuje 36 tekstów bliskich tematyce badań jubilata: chrześcijańskiej Nubii oraz czasom późnego Bizancjum w Egipcie. Autorzy – koledzy i współpracownicy profesora – podejmują zagadnienia archeologiczne, epigraficzne, dotyczące ceramiki i kultury materialnej, jak również historii Egiptu i Nubii w średniowieczu i później. Kilka tekstów odnosi się do dwóch stanowisk: Naqlun w Egipcie i Dongoli w Nubii, gdzie profesor Godlewski prowadził badania. Inne studia dotyczą m.in. takich kwestii, jak: funkcjonowanie sanktuarium pielgrzymkowego w Egipcie w późnej starożytności, spożycie i zużycie wina w egipskich wspólnotach monastycznych w VI–VIII wieku, rola postaci archanioła Rafała w chrześcijańskiej Nubii, pochodzenie „portretów apsydowych” w nubijskiej ikonografii monarszej, ideologia i funkcja północnego pastoforium w kościołach nubijskich na podstawie inskrypcji i malowideł, architektura sakralna w Egipcie i Nubii, ewolucja i rewolucja w ceramice nubijskiej, unikalne tkaniny z włosów odkryte podczas wykopalisk British Museum w Kulubnarti czy pozostałości biblioteki klasztornej w Deir el-Bahari (której monografię profesor Godlewski opublikował na początku swojej kariery naukowej).

The article offers editio princeps of a Greek epitaph discovered during the archaeological work of the Canadian Mission in Hambukol, a locality situated on the right-hand bank of the Nile, several kilometres to the north of Dongola, the capital of the Christian Nubian Kingdom of Makuria. The epitaph, constructed with the prayer ‘God of spirits and all flesh’, is dated to the ninth century on contextual and palaeographic grounds. It commemorates a certain Merki, who, according to the text, followed a splendid career in the state apparatus, which led from notarios to protodomestikos, i.e. the head of the royal office dealing with agriculture and fiscal matters.

The article presents a fragment of the cornice from the Ptolemaic Portico of the Hatshepsut temple at Deir el-Bahari discovered in 2021 in the fill of the Middle Kingdom tomb MMA 28. The fragment carries remnants of two dipinti in red ochre, of which one is illegible and the other preserves vestiges of the three first lines of the Greek inscription I. Deir el-Bahari 196. They show that the inscription was a proskynema (act of adoration) addressed to Amenothes (Greek for Amenhotep son of Hapu). The name of the author cannot be read with certainty (perhaps Pe[---]); the text also mentions a certain Menodoros, who may be the father of the protagonist of the inscription or another man. In an appendix, a fragment of another text in Greek, probably originating from the south wall of the Bark Room of the main sanctuary of Amun is presented.

This article offers publication of seventeen miniature vessels discovered in Hellenistic strata of Athribis (modern Tell Atrib) during excavations carried out by Polish-Egyptian Mission in the 1980s/1990s. The vessels, made of clay, faience and bronze, are mostly imports from various areas within the Mediterranean, including Sicily and Lycia, and more rarely – local imitations of imported forms. Two vessels carry stamps with Greek inscriptions, indicating that they were containers for lykion, a medicine extracted from the plant of the same name, highly esteemed in antiquity. The vessels may be connected with a healing activity practised within the Hellenistic bath complex.

A well established program can be observed in the decoration of the northern pastophoria of Nubian churches from the 9th/10th century onwards. It consisted of a painted representation of Jesus Christ blessing with his right hand the chalice held in his left and inscriptions in Greek with prayers from the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. The authors argue that this program was a Nubian creation, alluding to the function of the northern pastophorium as a place for storing oblations, keeping liturgical implements and liturgical reserve, and possibly also celebrating the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.

The present paper aims at analysing two inscriptions from the Faras Cathedral. Both contain prayers addressed to God by certain individuals. The first of them is in Greek and is modelled on Ps. 85:1–2; the second is an original composition in Old Nubian with information about the protagonist and the author in Greek. The publication gives the description of inscriptions, transcript of texts with critical apparatus, translation, and commentary elucidating all significant aspects of the texts.

The article offers an overview of wall inscriptions from the Southwest Annex to the Monastery on Kom H at Dongola documented in the 2013 season. The collection consists of 49 items. They can be divided into two categories: integral elements of the original decoration of the Annex and elements that were introduced when the Annex was in use, mostly by lay visitors. The two categories are described and the most interesting items are presented in greater detail. Information derived from the inscriptions is discussed in the context of Christian Nubian culture.
