Opis:
In order to improve the overall critical current characteristics of Cu sheathed in situ MgB$\text{}_{2}$ wires a special architecture of the wire, and processing parameters were used. The study presents the influence of the ex situ MgB$\text{}_{2}$ chemical barrier between ex situ core and Cu, suppressing the reaction of Cu with Mg. Wires, doped with 10 at.% SiC of 18 nm average grain size, were fabricated from MgH$\text{}_{2}$ and B or from Mg and B powders, using the powder-in-tube method. The methods of rotary swaging or drawing were used as the alternating wire-forming processes. The samples were annealed under high Ar gas pressure (hot isostatic pressing) at 750ºC and 1.0 GPa for 15 and 30 min. A significant difference in Cu distribution across the wires for a long and short time of sintering was observed. The formation of microstructure in the powder-in-tube process and the relationship between the microstructure and critical current density J$\text{}_{c}$ values, are discussed in this paper.

Opis:
Various kinds of active alumina supports were obtained by the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT) sol-gel process in the following steps: (1) preparation of alumina sols by extraction of nitrates with Primene JMT from aluminium nitrate solution; (2) gelation to spherical particles (with diameter < 100 žm) by extraction of water from sol emulsion in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol; (3) sometimes conversion of NO3 - stabilized gel to OH- form by reaction with ammonia; (4) calcination of gels to ?-Al2O3 with specific surface area > 100 m2/g at 500°C. The powders were then impregnated with chloroplatinic acid and recalcined at 500°C. Catalysts were also prepared by direct gelation of alumina sol containing hydroplatinic acid followed by steps (3) and (4). Pt/Al2O3 catalysts were used for the reduction of 1M UO2(NO3)2 - 0.5M HCOOH solution with hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. The course of the reduction was controlled analytically and by measuring the U(VI)/U(IV) redox potential. It was concluded that the catalysts obtained by impregnation of the supports prepared from nitrate stabilized gels exhibit the best activity and stability.

Opis:
Postharvest needle abscission poses a significant challenge to the balsam fir (Abies balsamea L.) Christmas tree industry. Root detachment, and other postharvest handling and transporting factors, lead to a progressive dehydration leading to postharvest needle loss. If this were so, reducing the transpiratory wa- ter loss through regulating stomata would be expected to reduce dehydration extending needle retention. This study explored this hypothesis through manipulation of balsam fir stomata using chemical treatments to determine the effect on water uptake, relative water content, and needle abscission. Branches were col- lected from 70 trees and immediately applied a postharvest treatment of water (control), ABA, fluoridone, BAP, theophylline, potassium nitrate, or dopamine. Stomatal conductance decreased by 27% after applica- tion of ABA and increased by 24%, 17%, and 18% by fluoridone, BA, and potassium nitrate, respectively. Consequently, the ABA treatment resulted in a significantly lower water uptake while fluoridone, BAP, and potassium nitrate all increased water uptake. Despite changes in stomatal conductance and water uptake, there were no significant changes in needle retention. Needle abscission commenced after an average of 12.5 days from postharvest treatment application and reached 100% completion after an average of 71.9 days. It is possible to manipulate stomatal conductance and water uptake through chemical methods, but such a manipulation does not guarantee superior needle retention. It is proposed that deficiency of certain hormonal signals originating from roots may play a critical role in postharvest needle abscission.

Opis:
Postharvest balsam fir trees are known to suffer a number of problems that may be linked to abscission rates, such as dehydration or wounding. By definition, postharvest balsam fir trees are also detached from roots and will no longer be supplied certain root derived factors normally translocated via the xylem. Resupplying those root derived factors may delay abscission. The objective of this experiment was to take sap from a root intact species (i.e. Acer saccharum L) and add it to the water supply of balsam fir branches. Further, the effect of reverse osmosis and autoclaving the sap supply will be explored. The experiment was conducted once in spring and again in autumn to examine seasonal changes in needle abscission. The only hormones found in the maple sap were ABA and its metabolites, with PA (163.0 ng g–1) being the primary metabolite present. Needle retention was higher in branches harvested in autumn, as long as they were provided a sap that did not undergo RO. If the sap had undergone RO, then needle retention was slightly decreased in autumn. Needle retention generally decreased as the concentration of maple sap in the water supply increased and this trend was accelerated if the sap had undergone RO. Autoclaving the sap successfully delayed the length of time for water consumption to decrease, but this unexpectedly did not translate into improved needle retention.

Opis:
Medium sized spherical particles of Li2TiO3 (with diameters below 100 mi m) can be prepared from peroxy lithium titanate solution (stabilized with citric acid) by a modified INCT variant of the sol-gel process. The process consists of the following main steps: (I) formation of aqueous phase emulsion in 2-ethylhexanol-1 containing the surfactants 1v/o SPAN-80 and 1v/o Ethomen S-15 (EH); (II) gelation of emulsion drops by extraction of water with partially dehydrated EH; (III) filtration and washing with carbon tetrachloride or acetone; (IV) non-destructive thermal treatment. The tritium release from sol-gel process preparation of Li2TiO3 micro-spheres was found very close to that observed for other traditional material however, the new process is more efficient than other processes because of the morphology of the sintered specimens.
