Opis:
Blount’s disease, or tibia vara, is the most common cause of pathologic genu varum in children and adolescents. Changes in the loading of knee structures such as tibial articular cartilage, menisci and subcondral bone are well documented in case of genu varum. But the mechanical effects of this condition on foot bones are still questionable. In this study, the authors hypothesized that stress distributions on foot bones might increase in patients with tibia vara when compared with patients who had normal lower extremity mechanical axis. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element analyses of human lower limb were used to investigate and compare the loading on foot bones in normal population and patient with tibia vara. The segmentation software, MIMICS was used to generate the 3D images of the bony structures of normal and varus malalignment lower extremity. Except the spaces between the adjacent surface of the phalanges fused, metatarsals, cuneiforms, cuboid, navicular, talus and calcaneus bones were independently developed to form foot and ankle complex. Also femur, tibia and fibula were modeled utilizing mechanical axis. ANSYS version 14 was used for mechanical tests and maximum equivalent stresses (MES) were examined. As a result of the loading conditions, in varus model MES on talus, calcaneus and cuboid were found higher than in normal model. And stress distributions changed through laterally on middle and fore foot in varus deformity model.

Opis:
The solution plasma technique, which has been recently invented by Takai and Saito, produces radicals, ions, UV photons, shock waves and metastable excited atoms. These generated active species are used as the source of some chemical reactions. The exact structure of the solution plasma is not well known at present, however it has been shown to be a versatile phenomenon for production of nanomaterials, sterilization and organic compound decomposition. Solution plasma technique has emerged as a great prospect for the chain scission (degradation) of polymers, to improve their solubility and physicochemical characteristics due to such advantages as absence of toxic materials, low temperature and usage of economical, simple equipment. In this study, polyvinylpyrrolidone, uncharged water soluble polymer of a known initial molecular weight, was continuously monitored using the continuous viscometry method, which gives the viscosity at any moment of the reaction, during the interaction of polyvinylpyrrolidone with plasma, for the first time in the literature.

Opis:
Economies are increasingly becoming dependent on Information Communication Technology (ICT) and concerns over sustainability have called for the investigation of the relation between sustainability and ICT. While the majority of the studies in this field have an environmentalist focus in this regard, technical, economical and societal concerns on sustainability have arisen in the last decade. Today, more and more studies are addressing the need for the inclusion of sustainability as a design goal for ICT development and for the systems that rely on ICT. Therefore, the integration of education on sustainability in the curriculum is imperative for current and future generations of professionals to accomplish this goal. In this paper, we propose a curriculum for sustainable ICT along with the expected learning outcomes and components. The course design is based on a multi-faceted approach that embraces different viewpoints on sustainability and aims to increase students’ awareness of the complex nature of sustainability.
Świat w coraz większym stopniu zależy od Teleinformatyki (Information Communication Technology, ICT). Warto zadać pytanie o relację pomiędzy zrównoważonym rozwojem a Teleinformatyką. Większość przeprowadzanych badań koncentruje się na aspektach środowiskowych, kwestie techniczne, ekonomiczne i społeczne pozostają w cieniu. Dziś jednak coraz częściej wyrażany jest postulat wskazujący na konieczność uwzględnienia aspektu zrównoważoności w tworzeniu systemów teleinformatycznych i w podsystemach, które są od nich zależne. Dlatego uwzględnienie w programie nauczania problematyki zrównoważoności stanowi imperatyw dla obecnych i przyszłych profesjonalistów. W tym artykule proponujemy program dla zrównoważonej teleinformatyki, uwzględniający zarys treści programowych i efektów kształcenia. Program oparty jest na wieloaspektowym podejściu, obejmującym różne punkty widzenia, którego celem jest zrozumienie przez studentów złożoności problematyki zrównoważonego rozwoju.

In this work, electroless nickel plating technique was used with WC-Fe and SiC-Fe powders. Plated powders were sintered at temperature ranging from 600C to 1100C under argon shroud in Phoenix microwave furnace. The mean grain size is determined by using three different techniques namely ultrasonic velocity, ultrasonic attenuation, and rate of screen heights of successive peaks according to the pulse-echo method by using a 2 MHz and a 4 MHz probes compared with the scanning electron microscopy images. In addition, the relative effects of porosity on ultrasonic attenuation and velocity in the WC-Fe-Ni and SiC-Fe-Ni composite samples are studied. It is seen that the ultrasonic velocity, the ultrasonic attenuation, the rate of screen heights of successive peaks have a linear relation with the mean grain size of samples. However, the correlation coefficients of porosity graphs have higher values than mean grain size graphs for the composite materials as expected. This indicates that porosity determines the ultrasonic velocity and attenuation for the composite samples.

In this paper, characterization of fly ashes obtained from the Yatagan Thermal Power plant, Mugla, Turkey was performed in order to determine their radioactive element contents, especially uranium and thorium. The representative fly ash samples were subjected to hydrochloric acid (HCl) leaching considering solid concentration, acid dosage, leaching time and temperature in order to reach certain uranium and thorium recoveries. The obtained results showed that the optimum conditions for leaching tests were: 30% solid concentration, 2.36 mmol/dm3 HCl addition, 240 min leaching time and 40 oC temperature. Dissolution efficiencies for uranium and thorium from the Yatagan Thermal Power Plant fly ashes were calculated as 90.12 and 81.18%, respectively.

Antimicrobial and antifungal polymers are gaining the attention of pharmaceutical makers and industrial design. Nanospheres-Polymers attached Platinum(II) / (IV) complexes have been synthesized to investigate antimicrobial activities. Firstly, nanospheres involving Schiff bases were synthesized from (aminomethyl) polystyrene and four substitute salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-fluoro-2-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-kloro-2-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-bromo-2-hydroxy benzaldehyde). Secondly, polymers attached Platinum(II) / (IV) complexes have been prepared by means of template method. The IR spectra show that the ligands act in a monovalent bidentate fashion all nanospheres involving Schiff bases. Square-planar and octahedral structures are proposed for Pt(II) and Pt(IV), respectively. All these substances have been examined for antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains, and antifungal activity. In particular, Pt(IV) complexes were more potent bactericides than all of the synthesized substances.
