The consumption of high-protein products has increased in recent years owing to their high nutritional value and attractive flavor and texture. Icelandic yogurt (skyr) is an example of such products. The available scientific literature lacks the results of a direct comparison of the quality parameters of skyr and traditional yogurt. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the quality of plain yogurt and skyr produced from cow’s milk. Regular and drinkable yogurt and skyr produced with the use of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria were analyzed. The physicochemical properties (color, pH, titratable and volatile acidity, water-holding capacity) of both products, and the fatty acid profile and nutritional value of yogurt fat (drinkable yogurts) were compared. The color analysis revealed that skyr was darker (P≤0.05) than plain yogurt, and that the value of a* (redness) was higher (P≤0.05) in drinkable skyr, whereas the value of b* (yellowness) was lower (P≤0.05) in regular skyr. Skyr was also characterized by higher (P≤0.05) titratable acidity and water-holding capacity, and pH was lower (P≤0.05) in regular skyr. No significant differences (P>0.05) in volatile acidity or the nutritional value of fat were observed between the compared products, excluding the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio which was higher (P≤0.05) in plain yogurt. Further research is needed to identify the factors that are responsible for the observed differences in the quality of plain yogurt and skyr. They can be resulted from natural differences in the milk matrix, but also from production technology, including the quantity and quality of added protein.

This experiment was conducted at the Lviv National University of Nature Management (LNUP – Dublyany) in 2020-2021, in the Pasmovo Pobuzhye area of the Western Forest-Steppe of Ukraine, on soil that was dark-gray, podzolic light loam, low in humus (Greyic Luvic Phaeozem). The study aimed to determine the activity of nitrapyrin in the form of N-Lock™ in soil after applying different doses and forms of nitrogen fertilizers to a winter barley field. The agrochemical properties of the soil were determined according to classical indicators. The soil reaction in the 0-20 cm horizon was slightly acidic, with pHKCl of 6.10-6.11. The content of easily hydrolyzable N in the 0-20 cm horizon was 65-70 mg kg-1 of soil, decreasing down to the depth 40 cm to 50-53 mg kg-1. The content of nitrate anion changed from 20-28 mg kg-1 in the 0-20 cm layer to 16-18 mg kg-1 in the 20-40 cm layer. Fertilization of winter barley N37 in the phase of the onset of spring vegetative growth with the introduction of N23P60K60 in the autumn for pre-sowing cultivation without the use of nitrapyrin was less effective. The use of the urease inhibitor in the early vegetative growth phase rather than at the phase of resumed vegetative growth alongside the same doses of mineral fertilizer contributed to the harvest of 7.1 and 7.4 Mg ha-1 grain in 2020 and 2021, respectively. In general, the yield of winter barley correlated with the dose of nitrogen fertilization in 2020 (r ± = 0.76) and in 2021 (r ± = 0.81), while the concentration of nitrates in the arable layer correlated with the dose of fertilizer in 2020 (r ± = 0.88). The calculation of the payback of fertilizers showed that the application of N23P60K60 (NH4)2HPO4 + NH4NO3 + KCl + N37 (NH4NO3) + nitrapyrin (N-Lock™) in the phase of spring vegetative growth is the most economically viable option of providing nitrogen nutrition to winter barley in the market situation of 2021.

Bisphenols (BPs) are widely used in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Many recent studies indicate that bisphenols (BPs) can cause adverse side effects in human, including alterations to the reproductive system, such as hindering conception, polycystic ovarian syndrome, premature puberty or reduced sperm quality. They may raise the risk of breast and ovarian cancers and endometriosis. Since there have been no data in the available literature on the effect of BP analogues, BPAF and BPS on the contractile activity of the uterus, the aim of this research was to determine the effect of these two bisphenols on the porcine myometrium (n=6) collected from immature, cyclic and early pregnant animals. Strips of the myometrium were stimulated with increasing concentrations (10-13 to 10-1) of BPAF or BPS, and smooth muscle contractility (tension, amplitude and frequency of contractions) was determined with equipment for measuring isometric contractions. BPAF caused a significant decrease (P<0.05-P<0.001) in all examined parameters in all groups of animals, but the highest changes were observed in the myometrium of the immature pigs. BPS caused the highest decrease in the tension and amplitude (P<0.05-P<0.001) of contractions in the myometrium of early pregnant animals and the frequency of contractions (P<0.05-P<0.001) in the myometrium of immature animals. In conclusion, the results indicate that both BPAF and BPS relax the porcine myometrium, but these changes depend on the physiological status of the animals.

Background. Thailand is a tropical developing country which has a serious increase in health risk due to hot weather exposure among outdoor workers. Objectives. The aims of this study were to compare the factors related to environmental heat exposure in three different seasons, and to assess the relationship between environmental heat and dehydration status in each season among farmworkers in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. Methods. A semi-longitudinal study was carried out in 22 male farmworkers throughout a year of farming. The primary data were collected in farmworkers for socio-demographic information, clinical assessments, and heat-related illnesses. Results. Average of environmental heat index (Median, SD) were severe in summer (WBGT=38.1, 2.8°C), rainy season (WBGT=36.1, 2.1°C), and winter (WBGT=31.5, 2.7°C). Average urine Sp. Gr. in summer, rainy season, and winter were 1.022, 1.020, and 1.018 respectively. The third sentence should be corrected as follows: The Friedman analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between the three different seasons in WBGT (wet bulb globe temperature), body temperature, heart rate (P<0.01), and respiratory rate (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the three different seasons for skin rash/itching, dizziness, muscle cramp dyspnea (P<0.05), and weakness (P<0.01). Wilcoxon signed-ranks analysis found a significant difference in the medians of the paired sets of urine Sp. Gr. values between baseline and summer (P<0.05). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient did not find a relationship between WBGT and urine Sp. Gr. in the three different seasons. Conclusions. This study demonstrated that farmworkers had exposure to environmental heat stress which was expressed through physical changes. Therefore, there is a need for either interventions or guidelines to prevent dehydration for outdoor workers in this region.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) causes feverous and hemorrhagic disease of domestic pigs and European wild boars with high mortality, yet no commercial vaccine is currently available. Several ASFV strains with natural deletion or gene-targeted knockout of multiple MGF360 and MGF505 genes are attenuated in vitro and in vivo, and can offer full protection against homologous challenge. However, the mechanisms underlying the protection are not fully understood. This study aims to investigate the effects of MGF360-12L of ASFV-SY18 on the cGAS-STING signaling pathway and explore the potential mechanisms. We identified that ASFV-SY18 MGF360-12L could inhibit cGAS-STING, TBK1, or IRF3-5D-stimulated IFN-β expression and ISRE activation. Specifically, MGF360-12L inhibits both the activation of PRD(III-I) in a dose-dependent manner, and suppresses the exogenous expression of TBK1 and IRF3-5D. MGF360-12L could block NF-κB activation induced by overexpression of cGAS-STING, TBK1, IKKβ. Downstream of the IFN-β signaling, MGF360-12L blocks the ISRE promoter activation by reducing total protein level of IRF9. Moreover, MGF360-12L protein can inhibit IFN-β-mediated antiviral effects. In conclusion, our findings suggest that MGF360-12L is a multifunctional immune-evasion protein that inhibits both the expression and effect of IFN-β, which could partially explain the attenuation of relevant gene-deleted ASFV strains, and shed light on the development of efficient ASFV live attenuated vaccines in the future.

Ancient, nutritionally valuable plant species and environmentally friendly agricultural technologies are gaining more and more interest from consumers and producers. The study objective was to compare macro- and microelements and the amino acid composition of the grain of ancient wheat species Triticum sphaerococcum and T. persicum – against common wheat, each grown both under a plowing and reduced, shallow tillage. The wheat grains came from field experiments located in three certified organic farms, in Poland. It was shown that the mineral composition of the grain depended to the greatest extent on the wheat genotype. Ancient wheat T. sphaerococcum, and T. persicum, compared to the common wheat, contained more P, as well as Fe, Zn and Cu. For both tillage systems, the total content of exogenous amino acids in the grain protein was far greater for T. persicum and T. sphaerococcum than for the common wheat; furthermore, higher content of exogenous amino acids was obtained from plowing tillage for T. persicum and shallow tillage for T. sphaerococcum. The nutritional value of the cereal protein, expressed with EAAI, was higher in T. sphaerococcum than in the common wheat. As compared to the contents of individual amino acids in common wheat, T. persicum grain protein had more Met, Ser, Pro and Tyr, whereas T. sphaerococcum had more Arg, Asp, Prol and Gly. The results indicate that T. persicum and T. sphaerococcum are valuable sources of macro- and microelements as well as protein, which indicates their suitability for production of food with increased nutritional value.

Soil acidification, fertility depletion, food insecurity, and environmental pollution all are consequences of the extensive use of chemical fertilizers (CF) in intensively managed plantations. Recent studies have shown that incorporating organic manure (OM) to partially replace CF can help to maintain productivity and soil health. There are no reports on integrated fertilizer management of Zanthoxylum armatum, for optimal ecological services and economic profitability. A pot experiment with Z. armatum was performed to investigate the possibility of incorporating OM in reducing CF use, enhancing soil fertility, and increasing plant growth. For this, seven treatments were designed: NPK, PK, NP, NK, OM, MNPK (50%NPK+50%OM), and control (CK, no fertilizer application). The results showed that NPK application significantly (P < 0.05) increased plant growth, soil nitrate-N, ammonium-N and available K compared to CK. However conventional CF application induced soil acidification. OM application raised the soil pH from 5.50 (CK) to 6.58 and significantly enhanced soil fertility by increasing alkali-hydrolysable N (2.3 times), ammonium-N (1.4 times), available P (4.3 times), the activity of invertase (1.5 times), catalase (2.8 times), acid phosphatase (1.5 times), and count of soil culturable microbes (2.9 times) compared to CK. Conversely, sole OM application did not result in optimum plant growth. Integrating OM with NPK (MNPK), on the other hand, not only provided the highest growth comprehensive value (0.84), but also substantially higher soil fertility comprehensive value (0.71) than traditional CF treatments. Correlation analysis also indicated a positive and significant correlation between soil microbes, enzyme activities and available nutrients. Therefore, OM+NPK could be an optimum measure to get maximum benefits regarding soil fertility, growth of Z. armatum, fertilizer savings and sustainable agroecology.

The proper functioning of the perinatal sucking reflex in calves is essential for the prevention of milk leakage into the rumen. The complex process behind its regulation is mediated at the gut level via multiple excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, of which acetylcholine and nitric oxide are of fundamental importance. The aim of our study was to depict age-related alterations in the cholinergic and nitrergic innervation of the esophageal groove (EG) using immunohistochemistry and Real-Time PCR methods. We found out that the highest number of cholinergic nerve cells was present in the second trimester fetuses. From this developmental stage onward, their amount was gradually decreasing and reached the lowest value in 4-year-old cows. The same developmental pattern was observed for nitrergic nerve structures with the highest percentage of nitrergic neurons in the third trimester fetuses. Our observations prove that both neuronal populations are crucial for a proper closure of EG in calves. Therefore, their contribution to a general neuronal activity in the ENS diminishes with age as the high motility of a gastric groove is not necessarily required in older cattle.

Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) is an essential tree crop with great potential economic value mainly because of its seed oil (shea butter) which is of high demand for manufacturing assorted products in food, cosmetic, and rubber industries. Propagation of this species is, however, hindered by relative unavailability of seed (nuts), erratic seed germination, a long vegetative phase, and latex exudation from cuttings. Thus, another method of propagation through in vitro culture is recommended for rapid multiplication of shea genotypes for large-scale cultivation. In the present study, the effects of two cytokinins, namely, 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and kinetin (KIN), and one auxin, namely 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), on shoot and/or root induction in vitro were assessed at various combinations/concentrations. The inclusion of these growth regulators in the culture medium significantly improved (P < 0.05) shoot/root regeneration over the controls. The highest shoot regeneration percentage (100%) was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 2 mg * dm^-3 KIN + 0.5 mg * dm^-3 NAA or 1.5 mg * dm^-3 KIN within 7/8 days of inoculation. This medium (2 mg * dm^-3 KIN + 0.5 mg * dm^-3 NAA) showed the highest mean shoot length of 3.24 cm. Compared to KIN, BAP was more effective in inducing vigorous shoot growth. However, rooting was induced only on MS medium modified with 1 mg * dm^-3 BAP + 0.5 mg * dm^-3 NAA. These findings can serve as baseline information for in vitro, commercial scale propagation of shea tree.

Background. Occupational factors have previously been mentioned as contributing to decreased kidney function and the development of chronic kidney disease of unknown cause. Sea salt workers are one of the occupations facing high outdoor temperatures and a highly, intensive workload. Objective. The purpose of the study was to examine whether the kidney function of sea salt workers at the beginning of the harvest season differs from kidney function at the end of the harvest season and to identify factors that can predict the change of kidney function. Material and methods. Data were collected from salt workers (n=50) who were between 18–60 years of age without hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease in Samut Sakhon province, Thailand. Urine specific gravity (USG) was used for hydration status and the estimated glomerular filter rate (eGFR) was used to measure kidney function. The mixed model was used to find differences over the harvest season and prediction of factors. Results. On average, the eGFR was estimated to decrease by 15.2 ml/min/1.73 m2 over the harvest season. The decline in eGFR of sea salt workers with moderate and heavy workloads were significantly faster than their light workload counterparts after controlling for other covariates. Similarly, dehydration (USG ≥ 1.030) significantly accelerated the rate of kidney function loss. Conclusions. Our study confirmed exposure to heat over the harvest season leads to decreased eGFR in sea salt workers. The rate of change of eGFR could be predicted by workload and hydration status. Workers with dehydration who performed medium to heavy workloads in farms showed faster kidney function decline than those who performed light workload.

Opis:
The middle and upper parts of the Skały Fm, Early to Middle Givetian in age, were investigated in four sections at Miłoszów Wood in the Łysogóry Region (northern region of the Holy Cross Mountains, central Poland). The dating is based on conodonts (Polygnathus timorensis Zone to the later part of the Polygnathus varcus/Polygnathus rhenanus Zone; early Polygnathus ansatus Zone cannot be excluded) and spores (Ex1–2 subzones) and, coupled with cartographic analysis and geophysical investigation, allows correlation within the strongly faulted succession. Significant lateral facies variations within the carbonate ramp depositional system in comparison with the better studied Grzegorzowice–Skały section, about 3 km distant, are documented, thanks to conodont-based correlation of both successions. Foraminifers, fungi, sponges, rugose and tabulate corals, medusozoans, microconchids and cornulitids, polychaetes (scolecodonts), molluscs (bivalves, rostroconchs, and gastropods), arthropods (trilobites and ostracods), bryozoans, hederelloids, ascodictyids, brachiopods, echinoderms (mostly crinoids, rare echinoids, holuthurians, and ophiocistoids), conodonts, fish, plants (prasinophytes, chlorophycophytes, and land plant spores), and acritarchs are present. Brachiopods are the most diverse phylum present (68 species), other richly represented groups are bryozoans and echinoderms; in contrast, cephalopods and trilobites are low in diversity and abundance. The muddy, middle to outer ramp biota (200 marine taxa, including 170 species of marine animals, 22 photoautotrophs, 6 forams) represents a mixture of allochthonous shallower-water communities (upper BA3), including storm- and possibly tsunami-affected coral mounds, and autochthonous deep-water soft-bottom brachiopod (e.g., Bifida–Echinocoelia) communities (BA 4–5). The richness and diversity of the Miłoszów biota is relatively high, comparable with other approximately coeval pre-Taghanic ecosystems during the Devonian climatic deterioration (cooling). Preliminary data indicate that in the Holy Cross Mountains, no large-scale replacement of brachiopod (and probably many other benthic ones, like crinoids) communities took place between the Early–Middle Givetian and the Early Frasnian, in contrast to the demise of the Hamilton/Upper Tully fauna in the Appalachian Basin. Such a similarity of pre- and post-Taghanic faunas does not exclude the occurrence of environmental perturbations and transient community turnovers, caused by immigrations during the Taghanic Biocrisis, but evidences the successful recovery of the indigenous biota.
