Opis:
The presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomeromycota, AMF) in soils may be crucial for sustainable agriculture. Although AMF impact on the performance and accumulation of therapeutic compounds of several medicinal plant species has been well documented, the investigations on the influence of medicinal plants being cultivated on AMF have been insufficiently studied. The effect of three-year monocultures of mycorrhizal (Hypericum perforatum, Levisticum officinale, Mentha × citrata subsp. citrata and Thymus vulgaris) and non-mycorrhizal (Chelidonium majus) medicinal plant species on AMF propagule abundance, species richness and composition was therefore examined. The AMF non-host plant species C. majus decreased the abundance of AMF propagules in the soil, whereas the mycorrhizal plants maintained the AMF propagule potential at the same level, however, they changed the composition of AMF species. The results showed that the choice of medicinal plant species, grown even for a relatively short period of time in a monoculture, can substantially alter the AMF potential of soils which in turn can influence the performance of other medicinal plants cultivated subsequently.

Opis:
Vertical distribution of species richness of various groups of organisms within trees is still insufficiently understood. The reason for this are, among others, the difficulties in accessing standing trees. The aim of the study was to determine the differentiation of species richness of fungi, lichens and lichenicolous fungi and bryophyte of three tree species (oak, birch and pine) within windthrow areas in the Kampinos National Park (central Poland). Ten individuals of each tree species were chosen. They were only thrown, not broken, without serious damage, still alive and easily accessible. The investigations of species composition were performed in five parts of each tree: trunk bottom, lower trunk, upper trunk, lower crown and upper crown. Individual parts of the trees were measured, than their surface and volume were determined. The species richness of the studied groups of organisms was calculated using rarefaction curves based on the number of samples, volume and area of the distinguished tree parts. Species composition changes of the tree parts were described using non−metric multidimensional scaling. The most important parts of trees for fungi were the crowns of trees, in particular oak’s. The highest richness of lichens was found within the crown of oaks, however they were recorded within all of the distinguished tree parts. The highest richness of bryophytes was recorded in the lower crown of oak and the trunk base of birch, but this group of organisms generally did not inhabit the birch and pine crowns. In the case of rarefaction curves based on the number of samples, the large positive meaning of the oak was observed, however the observed pattern was different when the volume and surface were taken into account. The general species richness of the studied taxa was similar for three tree species, the pine was distinguished positively in case of fungi, birch – in the case of lichens and oak – in the case of bryophytes. The species of trees differ from each other in terms of the species composition of the studied groups of organisms. We also observed the gradual change in the species composition from the base of the trunk to the upper crown.

Opis:
Dla 12 przekrojów jedno- do czteronurtowych dokonano hydromorfologicznej oceny rzeki i ocenę tę skonfrontowano z liczbą gatunków i okazów ryb stwierdzonych w tych przekrojach metodą elektropołowu. Wskazuje to, iż uzyskanie poprawy ekologicznego stanu rzeki, którego przejawem jest liczebność i zróżnicowanie ichtiofauny, będzie wymagało zwiększenia morfologicznego zróżnicowania jej koryta i poprawy hydromorfologicznej jakości rzeki.
Over a few past decades, some sections of the fifth-order, mountain Czarny Dunajec River, southern Poland, have been considerably modified by channelization or channel incision induced by gravel extraction. As a result, the contemporary river represents a variety of morphologies ranging from single-thread, incised or regulated channel to unmanaged, multi-thread channel. For twelve crosssections with 1 to 4 flow threads, hydromorphological river quality was assessed by four surveyors from the fields of fluvial geomorphology, river engineering and hydrobiology and compared with the abundance and diversity of fish fauna determined by electrofishing. Moreover, the variation in depth, velocity and bed material size was determined for each cross-section on the basis of measurements made at 1 m intervals. Average values of hydromorphological quality for the surveyed cross-sections ranged between 1.08 and 3.96, with the cross-sections with heavily island-braided morphology classified as representing high status (reference) conditions and those located in channelized river sections falling into Class 4. The increase in the number of low-flow channels within a cross-section was associated with increasing variation in depth, velocity and bed material size. Single-thread cross-sections hosted only 2 fish species and 13 specimens caught on average, whereas 3-4 species and 82 specimens on average were recorded in the crosssections with four low-flow channels. The reduced abundance and diversity of fish fauna characterised single-thread river sections located both upstream and downstream of the multi-thread channel reach. Results from regression analysis indicated the number of both fish species and specimens to increase linearly with increasing number of low-flow channels and variation in depth within a crosssection and exponentially with improving hydromorphological quality. This study shows that the simplification of flow pattern and the resultant aggravation of hydromorphological quality in some sections of the Czarny Dunajec, caused by human disturbances, is manifested in the remarkable impoverishment of fish communities. This indicates a need for increasing morphological complexity of the flow pattern and improving hydromorphological quality of the river that would be reflected in a restored high abundance and diversity of its fish fauna.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the water environment and its properties and the vegetation of buffer and water zone of midfield ponds. The studies were based on the analysis of the concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in water and in the plants species composition in 10 water bodies. Chemical measurements were carried out using absorption technique of atomic absorption spectrometry. In the statistical description of the research results a two-factor analysis of variance was used and basic measures of distribution were determined. In the examined field ponds 38 species of plants were observed. In the aquatic zone in which water body was not loaded with waste the number of plant species was larger than in the ponds with waste, and in the buffer zone their number was smaller. Whereas in the group of ponds of differentiated endurance of water table it was observed that in the water zone of ponds filled with water during the whole vegetation period there were fewer plant species than in the seasonal ponds. The examined water were characterized by a high variability of concentrations of analysed metals (Zn and Cu – as 1st class of water purity). A developed buffer zone of the ponds makes it possible to limit negative effects of the surface run off of mineral and organic fertilizers, but its presence often becomes a place of depositing wastes. The ponds contaminated with waste showed higher concentrations of Fe and Cu in the water in comparison with the unpolluted ponds, despite a greater variety of plants’ species within the buffer zone of the contaminated ponds. The disappearance of Antennaria dioica was caused by the level of Mn concentration in the water. Plants inhabiting the water zone of the contaminated ponds may have contributed to the reduction of Mn and Zn concentration in the water.

During winter time, beetle individuals were collected from soil samples taken from a Scots pine culture, an old−growth Scots pine forest, and a European larch culture and old−growth. The following research questions were put forward: (1) Does an admixture of larch in the forest stand contribute to increase in species diversity as well as the numbers of beetle individuals hibernating in the forest litter? (2) Does an admixture of larch in the forest stand result in an increased proportion of beetle species – potentially pests for the forest trees, in the carabid communities? We analyzed data with use PCA, Ward method. The first question should be answered positively. The second question should be answered negatively. The analyses of beetle fauna overwintering in the forest litter as carried out in this paper confirmed the purposefulness of larch introduction as an admixture in pine stands in Lithuania.

Opis:
The utility of phytocenotic indices in the diagnosis and classification of forest sites might be limited because of vegetation degeneration in managed forests. However, even in secondary communities it may be possible to determine indicator species, although these may differ from typical and well known plant indicators. The aim of this work was to assess the vegetation diversity of Scots pine stands in representative forest site types along a moisture and fertility gradient. In total 120 sample plots from Turawa forests were included in the study. These plots represented young (21–40 years) and old (> 80 years) Scots-pine-dominated stands. The forest sites were categorized according to Polish site classification. Four site categories were studied: Boew (very nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMoew (nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMw (nutrient-poor and moist sites), LMw (quite nutrient-rich and moist sites). The species composition of the forest patches studied hardly differed among forest site types. Almost all of the vegetation in site Boew was different from both moist site types (BMw and LMw). Sites Boew andLMwhad the exclusive species determined as site indicators. Moreover, young stands had their own site type indicator species which differed from old stands. Numerical classification showed that only two plant communities were widespread: Leucobryo-Pinetum in Boew and BMoew, and the community of Pinus sylvestris and Molinia caerulea in BMoew, BMw, LMw. In secondary communities typical indicator species may not be useful, but it is possible to determinate species that are locally unique to forest site type. Despite the convergence in the composition of the plant community resulting from tree stand unification, plant communities have the capacity for a more diverse composition. Tree stand conversion can increase phytocenotic diversity.

Opis:
The knowledge on the ichthyofauna community in forest complexes in our country is mainly limited to few information on fish species found in rivers and reservoirs located in the protected areas. Hence, the aim of present study was to evaluate the importance of forested and non−forested areas, which include small rivers, on the occurrence of fish communities. The main criteria of evaluation were species richness, biodiversity and density of fish from rivers located in forested and non−forested areas in Roztocze and Puszcza Solska (south−eastern of Poland). The 12 study sites in the two groups of small rivers located on forested and non−forested areas were chosen (tab. 1). The control fishing was performed by electrofishing using IUP−12 gear. The total of 779 individuals of fish and lamprey belonging to 22 species were caught during the study. In the sections of rivers located in non−forested areas we noted 18 species, while in the rivers in forested areas – 16 ones. The analysis of the abundance domination showed that the dominant species in the rivers sections on non−forested areas were perch, roach and gudgeon, while in rivers located in forested areas: gudgeon, dace and brown trout. Simultaneously, in abundance of fish fauna from rivers in forested area a significant share of eastern sculpin, burbot and European brook lamprey were noted. The fish communities from both habitats showed similar values of biological diversity indices, but slightly higher density was observed in the rivers located in non−forested areas. The fish species composition was highly dependent on the close surroundings of the watercourse and the type of riparian zone. For the habitats from river located in non−forested areas the common, associated with aquaculture and also invasive fish species were characteristic. However, in the rivers in wooded areas, the typical for small streams and the rheophilic fish species were more frequent. The results of present study showed, that the largest differences in the dominance in fish structure and indicators of fidelity to the habitat preferences between the groups of rivers were determined.

This review summarizes the major biological, biochemical and molecular methods which have been developed during last 20 years to distinguish parasites of the genus Trichinella. From the time of the discovery of Trichinella in 1835 until the 1970, it was assumed that trichinellosis was caused by a single species of parasite, Trichinella spiralis. Many biological parameters have been compared to differentiate the parasite, such as host specificity, geographical distribution, reproductive abilities, nurse cell development and resistance to freezing. Now, investigators realize that the genus Trichinella is a much more complex group of parasites and simple biological methods are unsufficient. In order to identify and better characterize the species and genotypes of Trichinella it was necessary to develop more sensitive techniques. First, for detecting Trichinella infection immunological methods have been used, such as detection of antibodies in host blood and antigens of parasites using monoclonal antibodies against immunodominant proteins. Later, biochemical techniques have been used such as isoenzyme analysis. The main goal of these methods is to provide a simple, rapid and reproducible techniques to differentiate Trichinella parasites. For this purpose DNA-based methods appeared the best ones. Beginning with the use restriction enzymes, repetitive DNA probes for detection of parasite DNA, and later techniques based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), give results at the high level of sensitivity. All of this information has been used to construct a new taxonomy of the genus Thrichinella. To date, 11 taxa have been recognized in the genus: 8 species (Trichinella spiralis T1, Trichinella nativa T2, Trichinella britovi T3, Trichinella pseudospiralis T4, Trichinella murrelli T5, Trichinella nelsoni T7, Trichinella papuae T10, Trichinella zimbabwensis T11) and additionally three genotypes whose taxonomic status is yet uncertain (T6, T8, T9). Based upon morphology, epidemiology of trichinellosis, geographical distribution and host range of the parasite, two main groups are recognized in the genus Trichinella. The first group comprises species that encapsulate in host muscle tissue, while the species of the second group do not encapsulate. The species and genotypes of the first group infect only mammals (T. spiralis, T. nativa, T. britovi, T. murrelli, T. nelsoni, T6, T8 and T9), whereas of the three species from the second group, one parasitises mammals and birds (T. pseudospiralis) and the other two infect mammals and reptiles (T. papuae and T. zimbabwensis). Due to the big genetic differences between Trichinella isolates, investigators predict that the number of species and genotypes found within Trichinella will be increased.

Opis:
From the time of the discovery of Trichinella larvae in 1835 until the middle of the next century it was commonly assumed that all trichinellosis was caused by a single species Trichinella spiralis. This species is an intracellular parasite in both a larva and an adult stage. The L1 larvae live in a modified skeletal muscles. The adult worms occupy a membrane-bound portion of columnar epitelium, living as intramulticellular parasite. More than century later T. spiralis have been reported from more than 150 different naturally or experimentally infected hosts and demonstrated worldwide distribution in domestic and/or sylvatic animals. Up to date, Trichinella genus comprised eight species (T. spiralis, T. nativa, T. britovi, T. murrelli, T. nelsoni, T. pseudospiralis, T. papuae and T. zimbabwensisi) and three additional genotypic variants that have not yet to be taxonomically defined (T6, T8, T9). Molecular markers revealed that Trichinella T6 is related to T. nativa, Trichinella T8 related to T. britovi. Two main clades are recognized in the genus Trichinella: the first encapsulated in host muscle tissue and the second-non-encapsulated. In this paper the history of Trichinella spp. discovery, their life cycle, taxonomy and phylogeny have been reviewed.

Opis:
This study examines the occurrence of epigeic lichens on study plots located within different types of habitat near the Siemianowka retention reservoir in the Upper Narew Valley. The outcome of this research is a better understanding of epigeic lichens and the problems associated with their distribution and conservation. The investigation of the less common and hence more interesting taxa found within the study area was based on species composition analyses of lichens in different habitats, the degree of recognition in North Eastern Poland and their conservation status as well as threats within the country. A total of 48 lichen species, mainly from the genus of Cladonia, were identified, which is a typical number for these types of habitat. 19% of the species growing on soil are classified as threatened and some of them have been recorded only within this study area. In total, 15 lichen species are under the strict or partial protection.

Opis:
The application of biochemical and molecular techniques in parasitological studies has provided increasing evidences of genetic polymorphism among parasite populations. This review presents possible origins of genetic variation within populations of various protozoan species. Since the mode of reproduction has an important influence on genetic polymorphism within parasite populations these considerations refer mainly to some protozoan parasites which have various life cycles, e.g. Giardia, Trypanosoma, Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma. Also other factors associated with parasites (such as: transmission and passage history in laboratory conditions; occurrence in different hosts or geographic regions; selective pressure of drugs; competitive interactions between populations) that affect parasite genetic diversity are discussed. However, the number of examined isolates of parasites and genetic markers, assortment of methods, probes, primers and reagents used is also of significance. The significance of genetic variability in parasite populations is still the subject of much interest and controversy. A simple interpretation of such variation is impossible because of the complexity of host-parasite interactions. The knowledge of parasite diversity at the nucleic acids level has continually increased, but a corect interpretation of this phenomenon requires at least the same knowledge of genetic variability in host populations. Nevertheless, genetic variability in protozoan parasites has many important implications, e.g. for taxonomy, epidemiology, control and evolution. Genetic differences within parasite populations might also be associated with phenotypic variability, e.g. virulence, antigenicity, infectivity, drug sensitivity, hostpreference etc.
